Hebrews Chapter 5
Showing all 14 verses for Hebrews Chapter 5.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: "
"Every high priest is a human being chosen from among other people, appointed to represent them before God - his job is to bring gifts and offerings on their behalf to deal with wrongdoing."
I stand exactly where every human representative has ever stood - between you and what feels distant or unreachable - except I never tire of the job and never fail at it. Let me carry what weighs on you; that is what I am for.
"Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. "
"A good high priest can deal gently with people who don't know better or who have gone astray, because he himself is weak and flawed too."
I don't ask you to be perfect before I'll be gentle with you - if anything, your struggles are exactly what I understand best. Never let shame stop you coming close; weakness recognised in yourself is the door to compassion for others too.
"And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. "
"Because of his own weakness, a high priest has to offer sacrifices for his own sins as well as for the people's."
Every human leader you've ever trusted needed forgiveness too - so don't be crushed when people, even good ones, let you down. I alone can lead you without first needing to be rescued myself, and that is exactly why you can lean your full weight on me.
"And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. "
"Nobody can just decide to become high priest by themselves - it has to be a role given by God, the way Aaron was appointed."
True worth is never something you seize for yourself - it's given, recognised, received. If you're chasing status to prove your value, stop; your value was never yours to manufacture in the first place, only to receive with open hands.
"So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. "
"In the same way, Christ didn't promote himself to high priest - God appointed him, saying to him, 'You are my Son, today I have become your Father.'"
Nothing about who I am was self-declared for show - my identity was given by my Father, not built by me. When you know your worth comes from somewhere solid outside yourself, you stop needing everyone else's approval to feel real.
"As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. "
"And elsewhere God says of him, 'You are a priest forever, in the line of Melchizedek.'"
I didn't come to replace one broken system with a slightly better version of the same thing - I came to offer something permanent, not passed down through family lines or timed to expire. Put your trust in what cannot run out.
"Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; "
"While he lived as a human being, Jesus prayed and pleaded with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission."
I know what it is to be terrified and to cry until it hurts - that was not weakness in me, and it isn't weakness in you either. Bring me your loudest, ugliest fear; I have already stood exactly there.
"Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; "
"Even though he was God's Son, he learned what obedience really costs through the things he suffered."
Being close to God was never a shortcut around hardship for me, and it isn't one for you. What you're going through right now can genuinely shape you into someone deeper and more faithful - suffering isn't proof I've abandoned you, it can be the very place obedience is learned.
"And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; "
"Having been brought to complete maturity through what he went through, he became the source of eternal salvation for everyone who follows him."
I'm not asking you to trust an idea - I'm asking you to trust someone who has already walked through fire and come out faithful on the other side. Follow what I've shown you, and you'll find the same path leads somewhere real and lasting.
"Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec. "
"God declared him a high priest in the line of Melchizedek."
Everything about my role in your life has been settled and confirmed - you don't need to wonder if I'm equipped for what you're facing. Trust that the foundation is solid, even while you're still growing into understanding all of what that means.
"Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. "
"There's a lot more to say about this, and it's hard to explain, because you've become slow to understand."
I would rather tell you the hard truth that you've stalled than flatter you with an easier lesson you'll forget. Real growth sometimes needs someone who loves you enough to say 'you've stopped listening' - hear that as care, not condemnation.
"For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. "
"By now you should be teaching others, but instead you need someone to teach you the basics all over again - you need milk, not solid food."
Growth isn't optional decoration on faith - it's the whole point. I don't want you stuck rehearsing the same first lesson forever; I want you strong enough to hold someone else's hand on the way, because that's when what you've learned becomes truly yours.
"For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. "
"Anyone still living on milk is inexperienced in living rightly - they're still a baby."
I don't expect you to arrive fully wise - but I do want you practising, testing, growing more capable of telling good from harmful as you go. Don't settle for staying a beginner when you were made for so much more.
"But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. "
"Solid food is for adults - people who, through practice, have trained themselves to tell good from evil."
The wisdom to tell what's genuinely good for you from what only looks good takes practice, like any skill - don't be discouraged if you get it wrong sometimes on the way to getting stronger. Keep exercising that sense, and it will grow sharper the more you use it.
