Hebrews Chapter 4
Showing all 16 verses for Hebrews Chapter 4.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. "
"So let's take this seriously - since the promise of entering God's rest is still open to us, none of us should end up falling short of it."
I don't want you living in constant dread, but I do want you to take seriously that some genuinely good things in life can be missed through simple neglect, not just dramatic failure. Stay alert to what really matters, and don't assume you'll automatically get there without paying attention.
"For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it. "
"We've had good news announced to us, just as they did - but the message didn't do them any good, because it wasn't joined with faith in those who heard it."
Just knowing what's good for you, or hearing good news, doesn't automatically change your life - you have to actually let it take root and trust it enough to act differently because of it. Don't mistake hearing the truth for living it; the second step is the one that matters.
"For we which have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. "
"We who believe do enter that rest, just as God said, "So I swore in my anger, they will not enter my rest" - even though his work was completed from the very foundation of the world."
The peace I'm offering you isn't a brand-new invention or a reward you have to manufacture yourself - it's built into the very fabric of things, available from the beginning, waiting for you to actually step into it through trust. It's older and more solid than you might think.
"For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works. "
"Somewhere in scripture, speaking of the seventh day, it says: "And God rested on the seventh day from all his work.""
Rest isn't a luxury or a sign of weakness - it was built into creation itself from day one, modelled by the very act of making the universe. Give yourself permission to actually stop and rest; it's not laziness, it's following a pattern set from the very beginning.
"And in this place again, If they shall enter into my rest. "
"And again, in that same passage: "They will not enter my rest.""
The good and settled life I'm offering isn't out of reach because of anything about the offer itself - it's only ever unbelief that closes the door on it. Keep that door open in your own heart; the invitation itself never expires.
"Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: "
"So then, since it's still true that some people must enter this rest, and those who first heard about it didn't enter because they didn't believe,"
Someone else's failure to grasp a good opportunity doesn't mean that opportunity is gone forever - it may simply be waiting for you to be the one who actually takes hold of it. Don't assume good things are used up just because others missed them; step forward yourself.
"Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. "
"God sets another specific time, calling it "today" - speaking much later, through David - saying again: "Today, if you hear his voice, don't harden your hearts.""
However much time has passed since you first heard an invitation to something good and true, "today" is still on offer to you right now - the door hasn't quietly closed just because time has gone by. Don't let a sense that you've "missed your moment" keep you from responding right now.
"For if Jesus had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. "
"If Joshua had actually given them that final rest, God wouldn't have spoken later about another day still to come."
Don't assume that reaching one milestone, even an impressive one, means you've arrived at everything that's actually meant for you - sometimes real fulfilment lies further ahead than the first destination in view. Keep pursuing the deeper thing, not just the visible achievement.
"There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. "
"So there's still a rest waiting for God's people."
Whatever exhaustion or restlessness has defined your life so far, I want you to hear this clearly: real, deep rest genuinely remains available to you - it isn't only for other people, or some other era, or someone more deserving. It's still there, waiting for you to actually receive it.
"For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. "
"Anyone who enters that rest has also stopped relying on their own efforts, just as God stopped his work after creation."
So much of your tiredness isn't just physical - it comes from constantly striving to prove your worth or earn your security through your own effort, and I want to release you from that particular exhaustion. Let yourself actually stop trying to earn what's already been freely offered to you.
"Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. "
"So let's make every effort to enter that rest, so none of us fall into the same pattern of unbelief."
Trusting me fully, letting go of self-reliance, actually takes real effort and intention - it's not the same as passivity or drifting along. Put real energy into staying open and trusting, the same way you'd put energy into anything else that genuinely matters to you.
"For the word of God is and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. "

"God's word is alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword - it cuts deep enough to divide soul from spirit, joints from marrow, and it exposes the true thoughts and motives of the heart."
I don't want a polished surface performance from you - I want to reach the real, honest truth of who you actually are underneath, including the parts you might hide even from yourself. Let that honesty in; it's uncomfortable sometimes, but it's the only path to real change and real freedom.
"Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. "
"Nothing in all creation is hidden from him; everything is laid bare and open before the eyes of the one we have to answer to."
You don't need to hide the parts of yourself you're ashamed of, because there's nothing you could hide that isn't already fully known and seen anyway - and I'm not asking you to pretend otherwise with me. Real relationship starts with dropping the performance; you're already fully known, and still welcomed.
"Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. "
"So since we have a great high priest who has gone into heaven itself - Jesus, the Son of God - let's hold firmly to what we say we believe."
Being fully seen and known might feel exposing, but I haven't left you to face that alone - I've already gone ahead of you into the deepest place, representing you there myself. Hold onto that; you don't have to face what's exposed in you without an advocate already standing for you.
"For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. "
"We don't have a high priest who's unable to relate to our weaknesses - he faced every kind of temptation we do, yet never gave in to sin."
When you're struggling with temptation, I'm not looking down at you from a place that's never known pressure - I've faced real temptation myself and understand exactly how hard it can be. Come to me honestly in that struggle; you'll find genuine understanding, never contempt.
"Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. "
"So let's approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so we can receive mercy and find the help we need, exactly when we need it."
You don't need to wait until you feel worthy or have your life sorted out before coming to me - come exactly as you are, in your actual moment of struggle, with real confidence rather than fear. I'm not sitting there ready to judge you; I'm ready to help, precisely because I understand what you're going through.
