James Chapter 1
Showing all 27 verses for James Chapter 1.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. "
"James introduces himself as a servant of God and Jesus Christ, and writes this letter to Jewish believers who are scattered outside their homeland."
I taught that the humble would be lifted up - my own brother lived that out, choosing to call himself a servant rather than trade on being related to me. Whatever connection or status you're tempted to lean on, let your service to others be your real credential instead.
"My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; "
"James tells his readers to consider it a genuinely good thing when they run into all kinds of trials and hardships."
I never promised a life free of storms - I promised to be with you in them, shaping you into someone stronger and more compassionate. When trouble comes, ask what it's building in you, not just what it's taking.
"Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. "
"He explains why: because when your faith gets tested, it produces endurance."
Every hard season you push through honestly, without giving up or turning bitter, quietly makes you more resilient for what's next. I don't waste your pain - if you let it, it becomes the thing that makes you unshakeable.
"But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. "
"Let that endurance finish its work fully in you, so that you become mature and complete, lacking nothing."
Don't just survive your hard seasons - let them finish shaping you. I want you whole, not just intact, and wholeness usually takes more patience than we'd like.
"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. "
"If any of you needs wisdom, ask God for it - he gives generously to everyone and never makes them feel foolish for asking."
You are never punished for asking for help understanding your own life - come as you are, uncertain and all, and ask. I'd rather you ask a hundred honest questions than fake confidence you don't have.
"But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. "
"But when you ask, ask with genuine trust and no doubting, because a doubter is like a wave on the sea, blown around and tossed by the wind."
Real trust isn't the absence of every doubt - it's choosing to stay anchored instead of being tossed by every gust of fear or cynicism. Ground yourself, and let your asking come from a steady place.
"For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. "
"That kind of person shouldn't expect to receive anything from God."
If part of you has already decided nothing will change, you've made it very hard for anything to reach you, however open a door I hold. Try showing up expecting something, and see what changes.
"A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. "
"Someone who is torn in two directions is unstable in everything they do."
You don't have to have it all figured out, but you do need to stop fighting yourself. Pick a direction honestly and walk it - half-committing to everything is exhausting, while showing up whole-hearted, even imperfectly, actually gets you somewhere.
"Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted: "
"A believer who is poor or lowly in social standing should take pride in the high position they actually have."
Your worth was never set by your bank balance or job title - it was set the moment you were made, and nothing about your circumstances can lower it. Hold your head up, whatever your current situation looks like.
"But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. "
"And the rich believer should take pride in being brought low, because like a wildflower, they will fade away."
Nothing you own goes with you, and knowing that isn't meant to depress you - it's meant to loosen money's grip on your identity so you can hold it lightly and use it well. Real security was never going to come from a bank balance.
"For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways. "
"As soon as the scorching sun rises, it withers the grass, its flower drops, and its beauty is gone - the same will happen to the rich person, even in the middle of their busy pursuits."
Don't let the pursuit of more quietly consume your whole life while you're not looking. I want you chasing something that outlasts a single hot afternoon - the way you love people, the way you show up for what's true.
"Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. "
"The person who holds firm through testing is genuinely fortunate, because once they've come through it, they'll receive the 'crown of life' God has promised to those who love him."
I see every round of temptation and hardship you get through without giving up on love or truth - none of it goes unnoticed, none of it is wasted. Keep going; what's waiting on the other side of endurance is worth more than the shortcut would ever have given you.
"Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: "
"When someone is tempted, they shouldn't say 'God is tempting me' - because God can't be tempted by evil, and he doesn't tempt anyone with it either."
You are always free to be honest about where a pull towards something harmful is really coming from, and that honesty is the beginning of change, not something to be ashamed of. I never set a trap for you to fail - own the moment, and you can own what you do next.
"But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. "
"Instead, each person is tempted when they are dragged away and lured in by their own desires."
Understanding that the pull comes from inside you isn't meant to shame you - desire itself isn't evil - but real change happens in noticing and naming your own wants before they run the show. Get curious about your own cravings rather than pretending they're not there.
"Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. "
"Then, once desire has taken hold, it gives birth to wrongdoing, and wrongdoing, once fully grown, gives birth to death."
Nothing has to run its full course - you can interrupt this chain at any point, and the earlier the better. I'm not waiting to catch you failing; I'm hoping you'll catch yourself gently, long before the small pull becomes something that costs you everything.
"Do not err, my beloved brethren. "
"Don't be misled about this, my dear friends."
I want you to see clearly, not through a fog of blame or confusion about where good and bad in your life really come from. Stay alert to what's true, even when a comfortable misunderstanding would be easier.
"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. "
"Every good and perfect gift comes down from above, from the Father who made the heavenly lights - and unlike shifting shadows or changing light, he never changes."
You can rely on goodness itself as a constant, even when everything around you is shifting - that's not wishful thinking, it's the character behind everything good you've ever received. Let that steadiness be something you can lean your weight on.
"Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. "
"By his own choice, he gave us new life through the message of truth, so that we would be like a first harvest among everything he made."
You didn't have to earn the chance at a fresh start - it was offered freely, out of love, before you'd done anything to deserve it. Let that take the pressure off proving yourself and instead free you to actually live well.
"Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: "
"So then, my dear friends, everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry."
Most conflict and regret in your life could be softened just by reversing your instincts here - listen a beat longer than feels natural, and let your words catch up to your thinking rather than racing ahead of it. This one habit will change your relationships more than almost anything else.
"For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. "
"Because human anger doesn't produce the right kind of life God is after."
Being right about something doesn't give your anger a free pass to run the show - the goal isn't to win the argument in the heat of the moment, it's to build something good. Let your convictions be strong without letting your temper be the thing that speaks for them.
"Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. "
"So get rid of all the moral filth and excess wrongdoing in your life, and humbly accept the message that has been planted in you, which has the power to save you."
You don't have to fix yourself before you're allowed to receive something good - you just have to put down what's weighing you down and let something better take root instead. Come humbly, not perfectly.
"But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. "
"But actually put the message into practice - don't just listen to it, because if you only listen, you're fooling yourself."
I'm not impressed by how much good teaching you've heard - I'm interested in how you actually treat people when no one's grading you on it. Let today be the day one thing you already know moves from your head into your hands.
"For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: "
"Anyone who listens but doesn't act on it is like someone looking at their own face in a mirror."
Every honest moment of self-recognition - reading something that names exactly what's true about you - is a gift, a real mirror held up with love, not judgement. What you do the moment after you see clearly is what actually counts.
"For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. "
"He looks at himself, walks away, and immediately forgets what he looked like."
The reason good intentions fade so fast isn't that you're weak-willed - it's that insight without action just doesn't stay. Do one small, concrete thing the moment you see the truth, before the mirror-image has time to fade.
"But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. "
"But the person who looks carefully into the perfect law that sets people free, and keeps at it - not forgetting what they saw but actually doing something about it - that person will be truly happy in what they do."
Real freedom isn't doing whatever you feel like in the moment - it's being shaped by something true enough that you're no longer a slave to your own worst impulses. Keep looking, keep doing, and you'll find the happiness isn't waiting at the end, it's inside the process.
"If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this manβs religion is vain. "
"If someone thinks of themselves as religious but doesn't control their tongue, they're fooling themselves - their religion is worthless."
The truest test of what's actually going on inside you isn't your prayers or your beliefs, it's how you speak about people when you think it doesn't count. If your words wound carelessly, examine that honestly - not with shame, but with real curiosity about what's driving it.
"Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. "
"Genuine, uncorrupted religion in the eyes of God the Father is this: taking care of orphans and widows in their hardship, and keeping yourself from being corrupted by the world."
If you want to know whether your life is pointed towards something good, don't ask what you believe - ask who you've helped this week, and whether you've stayed true to yourself under pressure to conform. That's the whole test, and it's available to you starting today, whoever you are.
