Revelation Chapter 21
Showing all 27 verses for Revelation Chapter 21.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. "
"John sees a completely renewed universe replacing the old one β and notably, no more sea, a detail loaded with symbolic meaning about chaos and separation being gone for good."
Whatever chaos or unpredictability feels baked into life right now, it isn't the final word on how things are meant to be. Hold onto the promise of real, lasting stability, and let that steady you through today's storms.
"And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. "
"John watches the holy city, the New Jerusalem, descend from heaven, beautifully prepared like a bride on her wedding day."
What you're actually being invited into isn't a set of rules to follow but a relationship β closeness, welcome, being wanted, like a wedding day rather than an inspection. Let that shape how you approach your own life and choices, from love rather than fear.
"And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. "
"A loud voice from heaven declares that God's dwelling place is now directly among people β he lives with them, and the ancient promise "they will be my people, and I will be their God" is completely fulfilled."
The distance you might feel from anything meaningful or sacred isn't the permanent condition of life β real closeness is the actual destination, and you're invited into it now, not just someday. Don't let a feeling of distance convince you that's all there is.
"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. "
"God personally wipes every tear away, and death, grief, crying and pain are all gone for good β the old order of suffering is finished."
Whatever grief or pain you're carrying right now is real, and I don't dismiss it or rush you past it β but it is not permanent. Let that promise give you the strength to keep loving and hoping today, even while the pain is still present.
"And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. "
"God himself speaks directly for one of the only times in the whole book, declaring "I am making everything new," and tells John to write it down because it's completely trustworthy."
You don't have to wait for some far-off future to experience real change β the same power that renews everything is available to renew you, your relationships and your outlook, starting with the very next choice you make today.
"And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. "
"God declares "It is finished" and identifies himself as the beginning and the end of everything β then makes an open offer of the "water of life," completely free, to anyone who is thirsty."
I don't make you earn your way to what really satisfies β I offer it freely, to anyone who's honestly thirsty for something real. Whatever you feel you lack today, that offer stands open, right now, at no cost to you.
"He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. "
"Anyone who perseveres and stays true is promised to inherit everything, with an intimate father-child relationship with God himself."
You don't need to be extraordinary β you just need to keep choosing honesty, love and faithfulness even when it's hard, one day at a time. That kind of quiet perseverance is exactly what I'm looking for, and it's already enough.
"But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. "
"By contrast, those who lived by cowardice in the face of truth, by broken trust, cruelty, immorality, deception and false worship, face the same lake of fire β a final, permanent ending."
I'm not asking for perfection, but I am asking you not to let fear or self-interest become the whole shape of your life. Courage to love, to tell the truth, and to trust, even when it's costly, is exactly the kind of life that leads somewhere good.
"And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lambβs wife. "
"One of the angels who earlier poured out the final plagues invites John to come and see "the bride, the Lamb's wife" β introducing an extended, detailed vision of the New Jerusalem."
Life keeps offering you a version of these same two paths β one built on exploitation and appearance, one built on faithfulness and love. Notice which one you're walking towards today, because the direction, not just the destination, is what shapes you.
"And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, "
"John is taken, "in the Spirit," to a high mountain and shown the holy city descending from God β the vision of the New Jerusalem now unfolds in full detail."
What you're about to take in isn't meant to be a puzzle to fear or overthink β it's a given, deliberate glimpse of what genuine belonging and beauty look like, meant to steady and inspire you, not confuse you.
"Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal; "
"The city blazes with God's own glory, its radiance compared to the finest gemstone, a jasper crystal-clear like glass."
What's genuinely valuable and beautiful in life doesn't have to be loud or urgent to notice β take time to actually see and appreciate the good things already glowing quietly around you, as a taste of what's promised in full.
"And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: "
"The city has a massive protective wall with twelve gates, each guarded by an angel and inscribed with the name of one of Israel's twelve tribes."
Wherever you've come from β your background, your history, even your mistakes β has a real, honoured place in the bigger story you're invited into. Nothing genuine about your identity gets erased; it gets included.
"On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates. "
"The gates are evenly spread, three on each of the city's four sides."
Wherever you're coming from in life β whichever direction, whichever background or starting point β there's a way in that's genuinely built for you, not just for people who arrive from one particular direction.
"And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. "
"The city's foundations are also twelve, each bearing the name of one of Jesus's twelve apostles."
Whatever tradition, faith background or lack of one you come from, you're not being asked to abandon it to belong β the whole picture here is inclusion and continuity, built on foundations laid by real people who also struggled, doubted and grew.
"And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof. "
"The angel showing John around uses a golden measuring rod to measure the city, its gates and its wall."
What God builds and cares for is never careless or half-finished β and that includes you. Trust that the same careful attention applies to your own life, even in the parts that still feel unfinished.
"And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal. "
"The city is a perfect cube β its length, width and height are all exactly equal β roughly 1,500 miles in each direction using the ancient furlong measurement."
The sense that "the sacred" or "the meaningful" is locked away somewhere special and hard to reach, off-limits to ordinary people, isn't how this story ends. What was once restricted to the very few is thrown wide open to everyone who wants in.
"And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel. "
"The wall itself measures 144 cubits, using a standard human measurement that the angel is also shown to use."
This isn't meant to be a mystery so far above you that it has nothing to do with real life β it's described in terms you can actually picture and relate to, because it's genuinely meant for you, not just for the spiritually elite.
"And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass. "
"The wall is built from jasper, and the city itself is made of gold so pure it's transparent, like glass."
Some of what's promised to you is genuinely beyond what you can currently picture or measure by today's standards β let that stretch your hope rather than your scepticism; some good things really are bigger than what you've experienced so far.
"And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald; "
"Each of the twelve foundations is decorated with a different precious stone, starting with jasper, sapphire, chalcedony and emerald."
You don't need a special role, title or qualification to be genuinely valued and beautifully "dressed" in what matters most β that status, once reserved for the few, is now offered freely to anyone who wants to belong.
"The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolyte; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst. "
"The list of twelve foundation stones continues and completes, ending with amethyst."
You're not valued as an isolated case but as part of a complete, carefully gathered whole β like one uniquely coloured stone set deliberately among eleven others, each different, all equally load-bearing.
"And the twelve gates were twelve pearls: every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass. "
"Each of the twelve gates is carved from a single giant pearl, and the city's main street is made of gold so pure it's see-through."
The way in β the entrance to real belonging β isn't cheap, easy or worthless; it's treated as something of the very highest value, because you, and your place in this, are worth exactly that.
"And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. "
"John notices there's no temple building in the city at all, because God himself and the Lamb (Jesus) are directly the temple."
You don't need to go to a special building, follow a particular ritual, or qualify through any human system to be genuinely close to what matters most β that closeness is the whole point, freely and directly available.
"And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. "
"The city needs no sun or moon because God's own glory provides its light, with the Lamb (Jesus) as its light source."
Real clarity and guidance in life doesn't ultimately come from external circumstances staying favourable β it comes from staying close to what's genuinely good and true, which never dims or runs out, whatever else changes around you.
"And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. "
"Whole nations who are saved live by this light, and earthly rulers bring their best achievements and honour into the city as a kind of tribute."
Whatever good, genuine contribution you make with your life β your work, your creativity, your culture β isn't wasted or meaningless. It has real, lasting value and a real place in the bigger picture.
"And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. "
"The city's gates stay permanently open, because there is no night to close them against."
A life without constant guardedness, without needing to keep your defences up against threat, is what's genuinely on offer here β let that be something to move towards now, even in small ways, not just a distant future state.
"And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it. "
"The nations' finest achievements and honours continue to be brought into the city."
What you build, create and contribute with real integrity in this short life carries forward in ways you may never fully see β so keep contributing your genuine best, not for reward, but because it matters and it lasts.
"And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lambβs book of life. "
"Nothing corrupt, deceptive or dishonest will ever get into the city β only those recorded in the Lamb's book of life belong there."
What actually keeps you out of a good, trustworthy life isn't who you are β it's dishonesty and corruption, in yourself or in what you tolerate around you. Choose truth and integrity today, and you're already walking through that open gate.
