Numbers Chapter 4
Showing all 49 verses for Numbers Chapter 4.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, "
"The LORD said to Moses and Aaron:"
I spoke to both Moses and Aaron together here - leadership and priesthood working in partnership, not competition. When you share responsibility with others in humility, you reflect how I designed leadership to work.
"Take the sum of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, after their families, by the house of their fathers, "
"Count the Kohathites, one of the clans of Levi, family by family, following the family line."
I asked for the sons of Kohath to be counted individually, family by family - even within a demanding, physical task, I still see every person by name and lineage, not as an interchangeable workforce.
"From thirty years old and upward even until fifty years old, all that enter into the host, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation. "
"Count everyone from thirty to fifty years old who is fit to join the workforce and do the work at the tent of meeting."
Thirty to fifty years old - I ask the heaviest, most demanding service of those in the strength of their maturity, not the very young or very old. There is a season for every kind of service, and I know exactly which season fits you.
"This shall be the service of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation, about the most holy things: "
"This is the Kohathites' job at the tent of meeting: dealing with the most sacred objects."
The Kohathites were entrusted with the most holy things - the deepest trust always follows proven faithfulness, and I give greater responsibility to those who have shown they can be relied upon.
"And when the camp setheth forward, Aaron shall come, and his sons, and they shall take down the covering vail, and cover the ark of testimony with it: "
"When it's time to break camp, Aaron and his sons are to go in first, take down the curtain that screens off the inner room, and use it to cover the ark that holds the covenant tablets."
Aaron and his sons themselves took down the veil and covered the ark, not leaving the holiest task to others - real leaders do not delegate away the hardest and most sacred responsibilities, they carry them personally.
"And shall put thereon the covering of badgersβ skins, and shall spread over it a cloth wholly of blue, and shall put in the staves thereof. "
"They are to put a covering of fine leather over it, spread a plain blue cloth on top, and then fit the carrying poles."
Layer upon layer of careful covering protected the ark from every eye and hand not appointed to touch it - reverence sometimes means concealing what is most precious rather than putting it on display for attention.
"And upon the table of shewbread they shall spread a cloth of blue, and put thereon the dishes, and the spoons, and the bowls, and covers to cover withal: and the continual bread shall be thereon: "
"Over the table where the bread offering sits, they are to spread a blue cloth, and place on it the plates, dishes, bowls and jugs for drink offerings; the regular bread stays on it too."
The continual bread stayed on the table even as it was carried through the wilderness - my provision for my people never stops, even in the most disruptive seasons of moving on.
"And they shall spread upon them a cloth of scarlet, and cover the same with a covering of badgersβ skins, and shall put in the staves thereof. "
"They are to spread a scarlet cloth over these, cover that with fine leather, and fit the carrying poles."
Scarlet over the bread, then badgers' skins to protect it from the wilderness journey - every layer served to keep the provision intact and safe until it reached its destination, just as I guard what I give you through every hard stretch of your journey.
"And they shall take a cloth of blue, and cover the candlestick of the light, and his lamps, and his tongs, and his snuffdishes, and all the oil vessels thereof, wherewith they minister unto it: "
"They are to take a blue cloth and cover the lampstand together with its lamps, tongs, trays, and all the oil containers used to tend it."
The lamps, tongs and oil vessels for the light were wrapped with the same careful attention as the ark itself - the instruments that carry light matter to me, however small they might seem next to grander furniture.
"And they shall put it and all the vessels thereof within a covering of badgersβ skins, and shall put it upon a bar. "
"They are to put it and all its equipment inside a covering of fine leather, and place it on a carrying frame."
Even the candlestick, covered and carried on a bar, needed careful, dedicated handling - nothing that serves to bring light into the world was treated as an afterthought in my house.
"And upon the golden altar they shall spread a cloth of blue, and cover it with a covering of badgersβ skins, and shall put to the staves thereof: "
"Over the gold altar they are to spread a blue cloth, cover it with fine leather, and fit the carrying poles."
The golden altar of incense, wrapped in blue, pictures how precious the prayers of my people are to me - I treat your prayers with the same tenderness these priests showed this altar.
"And they shall take all the instruments of ministry, wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of badgersβ skins, and shall put them on a bar: "
"They are to take all the other tools used for the sacred service, wrap them in a blue cloth, cover them with fine leather, and put them on a carrying frame."
Every instrument used in ministry, however minor, was wrapped and protected - I treat the tools you use to serve me as valuable, because they serve a purpose bigger than themselves.
"And they shall take away the ashes from the altar, and spread a purple cloth thereon: "
"They are to remove the ashes from the altar and spread a purple cloth over it."
Even the ashes from the altar were handled with a purple cloth spread over them - nothing connected to worship, not even its leftover residue, was treated as rubbish. Everything offered to me in love retains its dignity.
"And they shall put upon it all the vessels thereof, wherewith they minister about it, even the censers, the fleshhooks, and the shovels, and the basons, all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread upon it a covering of badgersβ skins, and put to the staves of it. "
"They are to place on it all the equipment used at the altar - the firepans, forks, shovels, basins, all the altar tools - cover it all with fine leather, and fit the carrying poles."
Censers, fleshhooks, shovels, basons - every tool of sacrifice was gathered up and covered with care. Every instrument you use in serving others, however unglamorous, is seen and valued by me.
"And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation. "
"Once Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sacred things, and the camp is ready to move, the Kohathites may come and carry them - but they must never touch the holy items directly, or they will die. This is the Kohathites' job at the tent of meeting."
The Kohathites could carry the covered furniture but must never touch the holy things directly - this boundary was for their protection, not punishment. I set limits around you not to restrict your life but to keep you safe within it.
"And to the office of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest pertaineth the oil for the light, and the sweet incense, and the daily meat offering, and the anointing oil, and the oversight of all the tabernacle, and of all that therein is, in the sanctuary, and in the vessels thereof. "
"Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, is responsible for the oil for the lamp, the fragrant incense, the daily grain offering, the anointing oil, and overseeing the whole tabernacle and everything sacred within it."
Eleazar was entrusted with oil, incense, the daily offering, the anointing oil and oversight of the whole tabernacle - a wide-ranging, detailed stewardship. Faithful oversight of many small things is itself a holy calling, not a lesser one than dramatic leadership.
"And the LORD spake unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying, "
"The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron and said:"
I spoke to both Moses and Aaron again here, because the instructions that follow matter for people's lives - I take the time to be thorough when the stakes for my people's safety are high.
"Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites from among the Levites: "
"Make sure the Kohathite clan is not wiped out from among the Levites."
'Cut ye not off the tribe of the families of the Kohathites' - I care about the survival of the whole family, not just individuals. My heart is always for preserving people, never for their destruction.
"But thus do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach unto the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden: "
"Do this for them so that they can live and not die when they come near the most sacred things: Aaron and his sons must go in and assign each man his specific task and what he is to carry."
'That they may live, and not die' - Aaron and his sons were told to personally appoint each man his task, precisely so that no one would be harmed through confusion or presumption. Clear, loving guidance from leaders protects the people under their care.
"But they shall not go in to see when the holy things are covered, lest they die. "
"But the Kohathites must not go in and look at the holy things even for a moment while they are being covered, or they will die."
They were not to look upon the holy things even for a moment, lest they die - some boundaries exist simply because I know better than you do what you are ready for. Trusting my timing, even when curiosity pulls the other way, keeps you safe.
"And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, "
"The LORD spoke to Moses and said:"
I speak yet again to Moses, patiently working through every family's assignment one by one - I never grow tired of giving clear direction to my people, however many times it takes.
"Take also the sum of the sons of Gershon, throughout the houses of their fathers, by their families; "
"Also count the Gershonites, clan by clan and family by family."
The sons of Gershon were counted by their own households - each family's contribution mattered enough to be recorded individually, not lumped together with everyone else's.
"From thirty years old and upward until fifty years old shalt thou number them; all that enter in to perform the service, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation. "
"Count everyone aged thirty to fifty who can join the workforce to serve at the tent of meeting."
Again, thirty to fifty years - the season of maturity given for demanding service. Whatever your current stage of life, I have a purpose fitted precisely to it.
"This is the service of the families of the Gershonites, to serve, and for burdens: "
"This is the service of the Gershonite clans: working and carrying loads."
'To serve, and for burdens' - service, in my kingdom, always includes bearing weight for others. Helping to carry what is heavy for someone else is at the very heart of what it means to love your neighbour.
"And they shall bear the curtains of the tabernacle, and the tabernacle of the congregation, his covering, and the covering of the badgersβ skins that is above upon it, and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, "
"They are to carry the tabernacle's curtains, the tent of meeting itself with its covering and its outer leather covering, and the screen for its entrance,"
The Gershonites carried curtains and coverings - plain fabric, not gold, yet essential to my dwelling among the people. Unglamorous work that makes worship possible is every bit as precious to me as the priestly rites themselves.
"And the hangings of the court, and the hanging for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and all that is made for them: so shall they serve. "
"and the curtains of the courtyard, the screen for the courtyard entrance near the tabernacle and altar, their ropes, and all the equipment used for this work - whatever needs doing, they are to do it."
Cords, hangings, every instrument of their service - the Gershonites' burden was detailed and repetitive, yet 'so shall they serve' shows this was still honoured as real ministry. Repetition does not make service meaningless; faithfulness in the routine is still service to me.
"At the appointment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burdens, and in all their service: and ye shall appoint unto them in charge all their burdens. "
"All the Gershonites' work, whatever they carry and whatever they do, will be directed by Aaron and his sons; you are to assign them everything they are responsible for."
'Ye shall appoint unto them in charge all their burdens' - clear assignment under caring leadership prevents confusion and protects people from carrying more, or less, than they were meant to. Being told your task clearly is a kindness, not a restriction.
"This is the service of the families of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation: and their charge shall be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest. "
"This is the service of the Gershonite clans at the tent of meeting; they are answerable to Ithamar, son of Aaron the priest."
The Gershonites served under Ithamar's hand - delegated leadership, trusted and effective, freeing Aaron and Moses to focus elsewhere. Good leaders raise up others they can trust, rather than trying to oversee everything themselves.
"As for the sons of Merari, thou shalt number them after their families, by the house of their fathers; "
"As for the Merarites, count them by clan and family too."
Merari's sons were numbered by their families too - the group given the heaviest physical burden still received the same personal, careful attention in the counting.
"From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old shalt thou number them, every one that entereth into the service, to do the work of the tabernacle of the congregation. "
"Count everyone aged thirty to fifty who can join the workforce to do the work of the tent of meeting."
Thirty to fifty years old again - the strength needed for carrying boards and sockets across the wilderness matched to the season of life best able to bear it. I never ask more of you than the strength I have given you for that season.
"And this is the charge of their burden, according to all their service in the tabernacle of the congregation; the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and sockets thereof, "
"This is what they are responsible for carrying, connected to all their work at the tent of meeting: the frames of the tabernacle, its crossbars, posts and bases,"
Boards, bars, pillars, sockets - the unseen skeleton that held up my dwelling place. The most essential support in any community is often the least visible, and I honour it just the same.
"And the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service: and by name ye shall reckon the instruments of the charge of their burden. "
"and the posts around the courtyard with their bases, tent pegs and ropes, along with all their equipment and everything involved in their work; assign them each item by name to carry."
'By name ye shall reckon the instruments of the charge of their burden' - even inanimate pins and cords were counted individually by name. If I take that much care over tent pegs, how much more do I take over you.
"This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service, in the tabernacle of the congregation, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest. "
"This is the service of the Merarite clans at the tent of meeting, under the direction of Ithamar, son of Aaron the priest."
Merari's families also served under Ithamar's hand - the heaviest, least visible tasks were given the same consistent, trustworthy oversight as any other. No area of service is left ungoverned or uncared for.
"And Moses and Aaron and the chief of the congregation numbered the sons of the Kohathites after their families, and after the house of their fathers, "
"Moses and Aaron, together with the leaders of the community, counted the Kohathites by clan and family."
Moses, Aaron, and the chiefs of the congregation shared the work of numbering the Kohathites - leadership carried together rather than alone. Sharing responsibility with others reflects humility, not a loss of authority.
"From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service, for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation: "
"everyone aged thirty to fifty who could join the workforce for the work of the tent of meeting:"
Every man was numbered individually as he entered his season of service - a personal, deliberate accounting rather than a rough estimate of the group. I know exactly who is stepping into each new season of life.
"And those that were numbered of them by their families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty. "
"those counted by clan came to two thousand, seven hundred and fifty."
Two thousand seven hundred and fifty Kohathites - a specific, exact number for a family entrusted with the holiest task. My care for you is always this precise, never a rough approximation.
"These were they that were numbered of the families of the Kohathites, all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation, which Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses. "
"These were all those counted from the Kohathite clans who could serve at the tent of meeting, counted by Moses and Aaron as the LORD had commanded through Moses."
This count was made 'according to the commandment of the LORD' - obedience carried out to the letter, honouring both the instruction and the God who gave it. Careful obedience, even in bookkeeping, is a form of worship.
"And those that were numbered of the sons of Gershon, throughout their families, and by the house of their fathers, "
"Those counted among the Gershonites, by clan and family,"
The sons of Gershon were counted by their families and fathers' houses too - the same thoroughness applied to every group, not favouring the family with the most prestigious duty.
"From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service, for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation, "
"everyone aged thirty to fifty who could join the workforce for the work of the tent of meeting -"
Every Gershonite between thirty and fifty who could serve was included - no one within the appointed season was left off the list. I do not overlook anyone whose season for service has come.
"Even those that were numbered of them, throughout their families, by the house of their fathers, were two thousand and six hundred and thirty. "
"those counted by clan and family came to two thousand, six hundred and thirty."
Two thousand six hundred and thirty Gershonites counted precisely - a smaller number than Kohath's, yet recorded with exactly the same care and precision. Being fewer in number never means being valued less.
"These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, of all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation, whom Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the LORD. "
"These were those counted from the Gershonite clans who could serve at the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron counted as the LORD had commanded."
'Whom Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the LORD' - the count was an act of obedience, not mere administration. Doing exactly what I ask, even in ordinary tasks, is itself an act of worship.
"And those that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, throughout their families, by the house of their fathers, "
"Those counted from the Merarite clans, by clan and family,"
Merari's families, too, were numbered by their households - the family with the heaviest, most physically demanding role received the same personal, thorough attention as any other.
"From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service, for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation, "
"everyone aged thirty to fifty who could join the workforce for the work of the tent of meeting -"
Thirty to fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service - the same careful boundary of age and readiness applied consistently across all three families. My standards for service are fair and consistent, not arbitrary.
"Even those that were numbered of them after their families, were three thousand and two hundred. "
"those counted by clan came to three thousand, two hundred."
Three thousand two hundred Merarites - the largest single family total, entrusted with the heaviest physical labour. The hardest work is often given to those with the greatest capacity to bear it, and I see that faithfulness clearly.
"These be those that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses. "
"These were those counted from the Merarite clans, whom Moses and Aaron counted as the LORD commanded through Moses."
Numbered 'according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses' - every count in this chapter traces back to my word and a faithful servant carrying it out exactly. Faithful people, following my word precisely, are how my purposes get done.
"All those that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron and the chief of Israel numbered, after their families, and after the house of their fathers, "
"All those counted among the Levites, whom Moses, Aaron, and the leaders of Israel counted by clan and family,"
Moses, Aaron, and the chiefs of Israel together numbered all the Levites - a whole community's leaders sharing responsibility for a whole community's people. Shared oversight, done together, brings a fuller, more trustworthy accounting.
"From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that came to do the service of the ministry, and the service of the burden in the tabernacle of the congregation, "
"everyone aged thirty to fifty who came to do the work of serving and carrying loads at the tent of meeting -"
'Every one that came to do the service of the ministry, and the service of the burden' - both visible ministry and heavy, hidden burden-bearing were counted as equally valid forms of service. Whatever your role looks like, if it serves others, it counts fully in my eyes.
"Even those that were numbered of them, were eight thousand and five hundred and fourscore. "
"those counted came to eight thousand, five hundred and eighty."
Eight thousand five hundred and eighty Levites in total - every single one of them known, placed and valued according to a task fitted specifically to them. That same precision and personal attention is true of my care for you.
"According to the commandment of the LORD they were numbered by the hand of Moses, every one according to his service, and according to his burden: thus were they numbered of him, as the LORD commanded Moses. "
"As the LORD commanded through Moses, each man was counted according to his own service and his own load to carry - so they were counted, just as the LORD commanded Moses."
'Every one according to his service, and according to his burden' - no two people carried an identical load, yet each was numbered fairly according to what was truly theirs to carry. Comparing your burden to someone else's misses the point; faithfulness in your own particular calling is what matters to me.
