Numbers Chapter 3
Showing all 51 verses for Numbers Chapter 3.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"These also are the generations of Aaron and Moses in the day that the LORD spake with Moses in mount Sinai. "
"This is the family record of Aaron and Moses, from the time the LORD spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai."
I keep a record of every family line, not just the famous ones - Aaron and Moses' story mattered to the Father long before either became well known. You are part of a generation I am watching over too, and nothing about your family's story is hidden from me.
"And these are the names of the sons of Aaron; Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. "
"These were Aaron's sons: Nadab (the eldest), then Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar."
I call each of my children by name before I know how their story will end - Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar were all named together, though two would fail badly and two would serve faithfully. I do not wait to see your future before I love you and give you a name.
"These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the priests which were anointed, whom he consecrated to minister in the priestβs office. "
"These sons of Aaron were the priests who had been anointed (formally set apart with oil) and ordained to serve in the priestly role."
Being anointed for service was never about earning it - the oil was poured on Aaron and his sons as a gift before they had done a single day's work. Your calling, too, is grace first, and only then a life of service.
"And Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD, when they offered strange fire before the LORD, in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children: and Eleazar and Ithamar ministered in the priestβs office in the sight of Aaron their father. "
"Nadab and Abihu died in the LORD's presence when they offered "unauthorised fire" during worship out in the Sinai wilderness, and they left no children behind. So Eleazar and Ithamar carried out the priestly duties while their father Aaron was still alive to see it."
Nadab and Abihu's failure was real and it cost them dearly, yet I did not abandon their family - Eleazar and Ithamar carried the calling forward. When you fail, or someone you love does, I am still at work restoring purpose through what is left.
"And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, "
"The LORD spoke to Moses, saying:"
Every instruction I give comes because I have already spoken it in love - even a simple administrative command like this one is part of a Father caring for the details of his people's life together.
"Bring the tribe of Levi near, and present them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister unto him. "
"Bring the tribe of Levi forward and present them to Aaron the priest, so they can assist him in his work."
I love bringing people near to serve one another - the Levites were drawn close to Aaron not to be used, but to be given a meaningful place in something bigger than themselves. I still delight in placing you near others so you can serve them well.
"And they shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the tabernacle of the congregation, to do the service of the tabernacle. "
"They are to carry out his duties, and the duties owed to the whole community, in front of the tent of meeting, doing the work needed to keep the tabernacle running."
Keeping charge of unseen, ordinary duties for the sake of the whole community is holy work in my eyes - nobody claps for the person minding the tent pegs, but I notice every faithful hour of it.
"And they shall keep all the instruments of the tabernacle of the congregation, and the charge of the children of Israel, to do the service of the tabernacle. "
"They are to look after all the equipment of the tent of meeting, and fulfil the community's obligations, by doing the tabernacle's work."
Guarding the instruments and needs of the whole community, even the mundane inventory of it, is an act of love towards people you may never meet personally. Faithfulness in small, practical care is how I ask most of my people to love one another.
"And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons: they are wholly given unto him out of the children of Israel. "
"You are to give the Levites to Aaron and his sons - they are assigned to him completely, set apart from the rest of the Israelites."
To be 'wholly given' is not a loss - it is the shape my most fruitful people take, holding nothing back so they can be fully useful to those around them. I ask the same whole-hearted gift of you, and I never waste what is surrendered to me.
"And thou shalt appoint Aaron and his sons, and they shall wait on their priestβs office: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death. "
"Appoint Aaron and his sons to carry out their priestly duties. Anyone unauthorised who comes too close is to be put to death."
The boundary here was never about excluding people out of contempt - it protected something precious that had not yet been made accessible to all. I tore that boundary down myself so that everyone, stranger and outsider included, could now come close to the Father.
"And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, "
"The LORD spoke to Moses, saying:"
I speak again and again to Moses in these chapters because I care about getting the details of my people's life right - I am not a distant God who issues one command and walks away; I stay present and keep speaking.
"And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn that openeth the matrix among the children of Israel: therefore the Levites shall be mine; "
"Look, I have taken the Levites from among the Israelites in place of every firstborn child among the Israelites - the Levites now belong to me."
I took the Levites in place of every firstborn - one group standing in for another. Long before the cross, I was already teaching my people the pattern of substitution: one life given so that others are set free.
"Because all the firstborn are mine; for on the day that I smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt I hallowed unto me all the firstborn in Israel, both man and beast: mine shall they be: I am the LORD. "
"This is because every firstborn belongs to me - on the day I struck down the firstborn in Egypt, I claimed every firstborn in Israel, both human and animal, as my own. They belong to me: I am the LORD."
I remember the cost of Egypt's firstborn and the mercy shown to Israel's - that history is why I claim every firstborn as mine. Whenever you remember what it cost to rescue you, let it deepen your gratitude rather than your fear.
"And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying, "
"The LORD spoke to Moses in the Sinai wilderness, saying:"
I chose to speak in the wilderness of Sinai, not in comfort - I meet my people in barren, uncertain places just as readily as in blessing. Wherever you are struggling right now, I am fully present and speaking.
"Number the children of Levi after the house of their fathers, by their families: every male from a month old and upward shalt thou number them. "
"Count the Levites by their family lines, clan by clan: count every male one month old and older."
I asked for even the month-old babies to be counted - no one is too young or too small to be seen and valued by me. Whatever stage of life you are in, you are already fully counted in my sight.
"And Moses numbered them according to the word of the LORD, as he was commanded. "
"So Moses counted them, following the LORD's instructions exactly as he'd been told."
Moses did exactly as he was told, no more and no less - there is a quiet faithfulness in simply obeying the instruction given, even when it is only a census. Obedience in small assignments builds the trust for larger ones.
"And these were the sons of Levi by their names; Gershon, and Kohath, and Merari. "
"These were Levi's sons, by name: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari."
Gershon, Kohath and Merari were each given a distinct family calling within one tribe - I love diversity of function held together by a single shared purpose. You do not need to do everyone else's job; you need to do the one I have given you.
"And these are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families; Libni, and Shimei. "
"These were the family branches descended from Gershon: Libni and Shimei."
Even the sub-families within Gershon's line - Libni and Shimei - are named individually. No family is too small a branch for me to name and know.
"And the sons of Kohath by their families; Amram, and Izehar, Hebron, and Uzziel. "
"The family branches from Kohath were: Amram, Izehar, Hebron, and Uzziel."
Amram, Izehar, Hebron and Uzziel each had their place named within Kohath's family - a reminder that belonging to a bigger calling never erases your own particular identity within it.
"And the sons of Merari by their families; Mahli, and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites according to the house of their fathers. "
"Merari's family branches were Mahli and Mushi. These are all the Levite clans, listed by their family lines."
Mahli and Mushi complete the picture of Levi's families - every branch accounted for, nothing left off the record. I keep just as full a record of your family as I did of theirs.
"Of Gershon was the family of the Libnites, and the family of the Shimites: these are the families of the Gershonites. "
"From Gershon came the Libnite family and the Shimite family - together these make up the Gershonite clan."
The Libnites and Shimites made up the family of Gershon - even a sub-group with a modest role gets its own clear identity in my eyes. You never disappear into a bigger group when you belong to me.
"Those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, even those that were numbered of them were seven thousand and five hundred. "
"The total count of Gershonite males, one month old and up, was 7,500."
Seven thousand five hundred Gershonites, each one a real person with a name I knew - a number in a census is never just a statistic to me, it is a family I love in full.
"The families of the Gershonites shall pitch behind the tabernacle westward. "
"The Gershonite clans were to camp behind the tabernacle, on its western side."
The Gershonites camped behind the tabernacle, close to my dwelling place - I give every family a position near my presence, not just the ones with the most visible role.
"And the chief of the house of the father of the Gershonites shall be Eliasaph the son of Lael. "
"The leader of the Gershonite clan was Eliasaph, son of Lael."
Eliasaph led the Gershonites - even a family with a quieter role needed a faithful leader to guide it well. Leadership over the unseen and the ordinary matters just as much as leadership over the spectacular.
"And the charge of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation shall be the tabernacle, and the tent, the covering thereof, and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, "
"The Gershonites' responsibility regarding the tent of meeting was: the tabernacle structure itself, its outer tent, its covering, and the curtain at its entrance."
The Gershonites cared for tents, coverings and hangings - fabric and thread, not glamorous ministry, but essential to my dwelling among the people. I honour the work of maintaining what makes worship possible, however unglamorous it looks.
"And the hangings of the court, and the curtain for the door of the court, which is by the tabernacle, and by the altar round about, and the cords of it for all the service thereof. "
"They were also responsible for the curtains around the courtyard, the curtain at the courtyard entrance near the tabernacle and altar, and all the ropes needed for that work."
Cords and curtains and hangings for the court - the smallest details of my dwelling place were still someone's careful responsibility. Faithfulness in the smallest details of your service reflects a heart devoted to me.
"And of Kohath was the family of the Amramites, and the family of the Izeharites, and the family of the Hebronites, and the family of the Uzzielites: these are the families of the Kohathites. "
"From Kohath came the Amramite, Izeharite, Hebronite, and Uzzielite families - together, the Kohathite clan."
Amram, Izehar, Hebron and Uzziel made up Kohath's families - the group entrusted with the holiest furniture. I match responsibility to the family and person I know can bear it faithfully.
"In the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were eight thousand and six hundred, keeping the charge of the sanctuary. "
"The total count, of males one month old and up, was 8,600, responsible for the care of the sanctuary."
Eight thousand six hundred Kohathites kept the charge of the sanctuary - a large family entrusted with a heavy, sacred responsibility. Whatever you are asked to guard for me, I have equipped you and others alongside you to carry it well.
"The families of the sons of Kohath shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle southward. "
"The Kohathite clans were to camp on the south side of the tabernacle."
The Kohathites camped on the south side - a simple instruction about where to pitch a tent, yet obeying it in trust was itself an act of faith in my ordering of their lives.
"And the chief of the house of the father of the families of the Kohathites shall be Elizaphan the son of Uzziel. "
"The leader of the Kohathite clans was Elizaphan, son of Uzziel."
Elizaphan led the Kohathites - even the group carrying the holiest objects needed a shepherd to guide them, because responsibility without leadership becomes chaos.
"And their charge shall be the ark, and the table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary wherewith they minister, and the hanging, and all the service thereof. "
"Their responsibility was: the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the sanctuary equipment used in worship, the curtain, and everything involved in using them."
The ark, the table, the candlestick, the altars - the Kohathites carried the very furniture of my presence. Closeness to what is holy is a great honour, but it demands reverence, not familiarity that breeds carelessness.
"And Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest shall be chief over the chief of the Levites, and have the oversight of them that keep the charge of the sanctuary. "
"Eleazar, son of Aaron the priest, was to be the chief authority over the Levite leaders, overseeing those responsible for the sanctuary."
Eleazar oversaw the Levites who guarded the sanctuary - oversight given not to control people, but to make sure the sacred work was done well and safely. Good leadership watches over others for their good, never for its own advantage.
"Of Merari was the family of the Mahlites, and the family of the Mushites: these are the families of Merari. "
"From Merari came the Mahlite family and the Mushite family - together, the Merarite clan."
Mahli and Mushi made up the family of Merari - the group assigned the heaviest, least celebrated physical labour. Every role, even the hardest and least visible one, has its own honoured name in my sight.
"And those that were numbered of them, according to the number of all the males, from a month old and upward, were six thousand and two hundred. "
"Their total count, males one month old and up, was 6,200."
Six thousand two hundred Merarites - a large family devoted to structural, unglamorous work. I count and value the labourers who carry beams and sockets just as fully as those who handle golden vessels.
"And the chief of the house of the father of the families of Merari was Zuriel the son of Abihail: these shall pitch on the side of the tabernacle northward. "
"The leader of the Merarite clans was Zuriel, son of Abihail; they were to camp on the north side of the tabernacle."
Zuriel led Merari's families, camped on the north - every side of my dwelling had its guardians. I surround my people on every side, leaving no direction unwatched.
"And under the custody and charge of the sons of Merari shall be the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets thereof, and all the vessels thereof, and all that serveth thereto, "
"The Merarites were responsible for: the tabernacle's wooden frames, crossbars, posts, bases, and all the related equipment and tools."
Boards, bars, pillars, sockets - the Merarites carried the structural skeleton that held everything else up. The most vital work is often the least visible; without it, nothing else stands.
"And the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords. "
"Also the courtyard posts all around, their bases, tent pegs, and ropes."
Even the pillars, pins and cords of the outer court were someone's assigned duty - nothing in my house was left uncared for, however small or peripheral it seemed.
"But those that encamp before the tabernacle toward the east, even before the tabernacle of the congregation eastward, shall be Moses, and Aaron and his sons, keeping the charge of the sanctuary for the charge of the children of Israel; and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death. "
"Moses, Aaron, and Aaron's sons were to camp on the east side, in front of the tabernacle entrance, responsible for the sanctuary on behalf of the whole community. Anyone unauthorised who approached was to be put to death."
Moses and Aaron camped to the east, facing the rising sun, first in line to guard what was holy and first to bear the cost if it were profaned. True leadership takes the frontline, exposed position rather than the safest one.
"All that were numbered of the Levites, which Moses and Aaron numbered at the commandment of the LORD, throughout their families, all the males from a month old and upward, were twenty and two thousand. "
"The total number of Levites counted by Moses and Aaron, as commanded, across all their families - males one month old and up - was 22,000."
Twenty-two thousand Levites, every male counted - a whole tribe accounted for down to the last person. My accounting of my people is always complete; no one slips through unnoticed.
"And the LORD said unto Moses, Number all the firstborn of the males of the children of Israel from a month old and upward, and take the number of their names. "
"The LORD told Moses: count all the firstborn males among the Israelites, one month old and up, and record their names."
I asked for every firstborn male to be numbered by name - a personal, individual reckoning, not a rough estimate. I still deal with you as a named individual, never as a faceless statistic.
"And thou shalt take the Levites for me (I am the LORD) instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel; and the cattle of the Levites instead of all the firstlings among the cattle of the children of Israel. "
"Take the Levites for me - I am the LORD - in place of all the firstborn Israelites, and take the Levites' livestock in place of all the firstborn livestock belonging to the Israelites."
I took the Levites, and even their cattle, in place of Israel's firstborn and firstlings - substitution running through every layer of this arrangement. Long before the cross, I was teaching that one can stand in the place of another out of love.
"And Moses numbered, as the LORD commanded him, all the firstborn among the children of Israel. "
"So Moses counted all the firstborn among the Israelites, exactly as the LORD had instructed."
Moses did exactly as commanded and numbered the firstborn - simple, faithful obedience to a detailed instruction. Sometimes loving me looks like nothing more dramatic than doing precisely what has been asked.
"And all the firstborn males by the number of names, from a month old and upward, of those that were numbered of them, were twenty and two thousand two hundred and threescore and thirteen. "
"The total number of firstborn males, one month old and up, recorded by name, was 22,273."
Twenty-two thousand two hundred and seventy-three firstborn males - an exact number, not a round guess. My care for you is precise and personal, right down to details others might think too small to matter.
"And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, "
"The LORD spoke to Moses, saying:"
I speak yet again to Moses about this arrangement - repeating myself patiently until the instruction is fully carried out. I am patient with the details of my people's obedience, willing to explain again rather than give up on them.
"Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle; and the Levites shall be mine: I am the LORD. "
"Take the Levites in place of all the firstborn Israelites, and the Levites' livestock in place of their livestock. The Levites belong to me - I am the LORD."
'The Levites shall be mine: I am the LORD' - belonging to me was the whole point of taking them in this way. Whatever role you are given, your deepest identity is simply that you belong to me.
"And for those that are to be redeemed of the two hundred and threescore and thirteen of the firstborn of the children of Israel, which are more than the Levites; "
"As for the 273 firstborn Israelites who are extra, more than the number of Levites available to stand in for them -"
Two hundred and seventy-three firstborn had no Levite to stand in their place, and needed a separate provision - I make sure that even the 'leftover' cases, the ones who don't fit the neat pattern, are still fully provided for.
"Thou shalt even take five shekels apiece by the poll, after the shekel of the sanctuary shalt thou take them: (the shekel is twenty gerahs:) "
"Collect five shekels for each of them, weighed by the sanctuary standard (one shekel equals twenty gerahs)."
Five shekels apiece, weighed by the sanctuary standard - redemption had a real, fixed cost, not a vague sentiment. Whenever you think of being redeemed, remember it was never cheap or careless; a genuine price was paid.
"And thou shalt give the money, wherewith the odd number of them is to be redeemed, unto Aaron and to his sons. "
"Give the money collected for redeeming the extra firstborn to Aaron and his sons."
The redemption money went to Aaron and his sons, the priests who served on the people's behalf - provision for the priesthood came directly from the people they served, a picture of mutual care within community.
"And Moses took the redemption money of them that were over and above them that were redeemed by the Levites: "
"So Moses collected the redemption money from those who were extra, beyond the number already covered by the Levites."
Moses carefully took the redemption money for those who were 'over and above' the Levites - even the surplus, the ones who didn't fit the main pattern, were not forgotten or overlooked in the accounting.
"Of the firstborn of the children of Israel took he the money; a thousand three hundred and threescore and five shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary: "
"From the firstborn Israelites he collected the money: 1,365 shekels, by the sanctuary standard."
One thousand three hundred and sixty-five shekels, weighed by the sanctuary standard - an exact sum for an exact number of people. Redemption in my kingdom is never approximate; it is complete and accounted for down to the last person.
"And Moses gave the money of them that were redeemed unto Aaron and to his sons, according to the word of the LORD, as the LORD commanded Moses. "
"Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and his sons, exactly as the LORD had instructed him."
Moses did precisely as the LORD commanded - the chapter ends the same way it lived: quiet, exact obedience to detailed instructions. There is real worship in simply finishing well what you were asked to do.
