Mark Chapter 13
Showing all 37 verses for Mark Chapter 13.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"And as he went out of the temple, one of his disciples saith unto him, Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here! "
"As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Teacher, look at these huge stones and incredible buildings!""
I let my disciple admire something built to look eternal, because it's a very human thing to be impressed by size and grandeur. But notice I don't leave it there - I'm about to widen his view of what actually lasts.
"And Jesus answering said unto him, Seest thou these great buildings? there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down. "
"Jesus replied, "Do you see these enormous buildings? Not one stone will be left standing on another - every single one will be torn down.""
I'm telling you plainly that even the things people treat as untouchable and eternal will fall. I say this not to frighten you but to free you - don't anchor your hope in stone and gold, because I want you looking for something that can't be knocked down.
"And as he sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, "
"Later, as Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives facing the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew came to him privately."
I chose to have this conversation privately, with just my closest friends, because some of the hardest and most important truths are best shared quietly, with people you trust, rather than shouted to a crowd.
"Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled? "
"They asked him, "Tell us, when will this happen? And what will be the sign that all these things are about to take place?""
You've asked me for a timetable, and I'm going to answer you honestly - but not with the neat certainty you're hoping for. What I give you instead is something more useful: how to stay steady and awake no matter when the hard times come.
"And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceive you: "
"Jesus began to answer them: "Be careful that no one leads you astray.""
Before I tell you what's coming, I want you to protect your mind first - because when people are anxious about the future, that's exactly when they're most easily manipulated. Stay alert to who's trying to lead you, and why.
"For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. "
""Many will come using my name, claiming, 'I am the Christ' - and they will deceive a lot of people.""
People will use my name to gain power over you - I want you to see through that, because my authority was never about controlling people or demanding blind loyalty. Judge anyone who claims to speak for me by whether their actions actually look like love, humility, and honesty.
"And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled: for such things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet. "
""And when you hear about wars and threats of war, don't be alarmed - these things have to happen, but it doesn't mean the end has come yet.""
I don't want you living in constant dread every time you hear troubling news. Wars and conflict are part of a broken world, but your peace doesn't have to depend on the news cycle - stay grounded rather than swept away by every alarm.
"For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows. "
""Nation will go to war against nation, kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are only the first labour pains.""
When disaster strikes, I want you to see it the way you'd see labour pains - painful and real, but not proof that everything is falling apart with no purpose. Suffering can be part of something being born, not just something dying.
"But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them. "
""Watch yourselves closely. People will hand you over to local councils, and you'll be beaten in synagogues. You'll stand trial in front of governors and kings because of me - so that you can tell them the truth about me.""
I'm honest with you that following me may cost you comfort, safety, even your freedom - I never promised an easy road. But even in your worst moments, standing accused, you can turn that room into a place where truth gets spoken rather than just a place where you suffer.
"And the gospel must first be published among all nations. "
""And the good news must first be preached to every nation.""
Even while you're going through hardship for standing with me, know that something good is moving outward through it - my message was never meant to stay small or local. Your struggle can be part of something reaching further than you can currently see.
"But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost. "
""When they arrest you and hand you over for trial, don't worry beforehand about what to say. Don't rehearse it - just say whatever is given to you in that moment, because it won't really be you speaking, but the Holy Spirit.""
In your most frightening moments, when you feel unprepared and exposed, I don't want you paralysed by anxiety about getting it right. Trust that in the moment itself, you'll be given what you need - preparation isn't always about rehearsing words in advance.
"Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death. "
""Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child. Children will turn against their parents and have them put to death.""
I won't pretend that choosing what's right will always keep your family together - sometimes it costs you exactly the relationships you'd expect to keep you safe. I say this not to scare you into silence but so you're not blindsided if it happens, and so you know I understand what that pain costs.
"And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. "
""Everyone will hate you because of me. But whoever holds firm all the way to the end will be saved.""
I'm not promising you popularity for doing the right thing - sometimes it brings the opposite. What I am promising is that if you keep going, keep holding on to what's true even when it costs you, you come through it whole.
"But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains: "
""But when you see the 'abomination of desolation' standing where it shouldn't be - Daniel the prophet spoke of this (whoever is reading this, understand what it means) - then those in Judea should run to the mountains.""
When you see the warning signs clearly, I want you to act - don't freeze, don't rationalise, don't wait to see if it gets better. Sometimes wisdom means recognising the moment to leave rather than the moment to stay and hope.
"And let him that is on the housetop not go down into the house, neither enter therein, to take any thing out of his house: "
""If you're on the roof of your house, don't go down into the house to grab anything.""
When it's time to move, I want you to leave behind the things that don't matter as much as your safety and freedom. Don't let attachment to possessions cost you what's actually irreplaceable.
"And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to take up his garment. "
""And if you're out in the field, don't go back to get your coat.""
I keep repeating this point in different everyday settings because I want it to really land: when the moment to act comes, don't look back for comfort or convenience. Move.
"But woe to them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! "
""It will be especially terrible for pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days.""
I don't forget the people for whom hard times are hardest - I want you to notice and care for the most vulnerable people around you in any crisis, not just yourself.
"And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter. "
""Pray that this doesn't happen in winter.""
I want you to bring your very practical concerns to prayer, not just your big spiritual questions. Ordinary, physical difficulties - weather, timing, circumstances - are worth bringing honestly before God.
"For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be. "
""Because in those days there will be suffering worse than anything since God created the world, right up to now - and there will never be anything like it again.""
I'm not exaggerating for effect - some times in life really are as bad as they feel, and I won't tell you otherwise just to make you feel better. Naming how severe something is honestly is often the first step towards getting through it.
"And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect’s sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days. "
""And if the Lord had not cut those days short, no one would survive. But for the sake of the people he has chosen, he has shortened them.""
However dark a season gets, I don't leave it open-ended forever - there's a limit, set out of love for the people going through it, not indifference. Hold on, because the hardest stretch isn't the whole story.
"And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not: "
""And if anyone tells you at that time, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'Look, there he is!' - don't believe them.""
When things are falling apart, be extra careful about anyone claiming to have the answer or special authority to fix it all - desperation makes people vulnerable, and I want you protected, not exploited.
"For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect. "
""False Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders, trying to deceive even God's chosen people, if that were possible.""
Don't judge truth by how impressive or miraculous something looks - even very convincing displays can be deceptive. Test what you're told against what you know is genuinely good and true, not against how dazzling it appears.
"But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things. "
""So be on your guard. I have told you everything ahead of time.""
I've told you all this in advance not to scare you, but so that when difficult things happen, you're not blindsided - you can recognise what's happening and respond with clarity instead of panic.
"But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, "
""But in those days, after that suffering, the sun will go dark, and the moon will stop giving light.""
I use the biggest images I can - the sun and moon themselves failing - because I want you to grasp that what's coming isn't just another event in history, it's something that changes everything. Don't measure it by ordinary standards.
"And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. "
""The stars will fall from the sky, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken.""
When I describe the heavens themselves being shaken, I want you to feel the true scale of what's coming - not something small or private, but something that touches everything. Let that reframe what you think ultimately matters.
"And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. "
""And then people will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.""
After everything hard I've described, I want you to know it doesn't end there - there's a moment of visible, undeniable arrival still to come. Don't let the difficult middle of the story make you forget there's more to it.
"And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven. "
""And then he will send out his angels and gather his chosen people from everywhere - from one end of the earth to the other, from one end of heaven to the other.""
Whatever has scattered you - distance, hardship, even the divisions I warned you families might face - I promise a complete gathering back together in the end. Don't lose hope in fragmentation being the final word.
"Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near: "
""Now learn a lesson from the fig tree: when its branches get soft and start growing leaves, you know summer is coming.""
I like to teach with things you already understand from everyday life, because the wisdom I'm offering isn't reserved for experts - anyone paying attention to the world around them can learn to read what matters.
"So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors. "
""In the same way, when you see these things happening, know that it - he - is near, right at the door.""
I want you actively watching and interpreting what's happening around you, not passively waiting - the same way you'd notice a season changing. Awareness itself is part of staying ready.
"Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done. "
""I tell you the truth: this generation will not pass away until all these things have happened.""
When I speak, I'm not being vague or hedging - I give you something concrete and time-bound because I want my words tested against reality, not treated as unfalsifiable mystery. Trust that what I say has real weight and real timing behind it.
"Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away. "
""The sky and the earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.""
I want you to build your life on something more lasting than anything physical, including things that feel utterly solid and permanent right now. What I've told you will still be true long after everything you can see and touch has gone.
"But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father. "
""But nobody knows the day or the hour - not the angels in heaven, not even the Son, only the Father.""
I'm honest with you that I don't have every answer, even about things that matter enormously - and I want you to be at peace with not knowing everything either. Certainty about every detail was never the point; trust was.
"Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is. "
""Be on guard! Stay alert and pray, because you don't know when the time will come.""
Since you can't know exactly when things will change, I'm not asking you to guess the timing - I'm asking you to live consistently alert and present, day by day, rather than lurching between complacency and panic.
"For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. "
""It's like a man going on a long journey: he leaves his house, puts his servants in charge, gives each one a specific job, and tells the doorkeeper to stay watchful.""
I've given each of you real responsibility while I'm not visibly present - readiness isn't about staring at the horizon, it's about faithfully doing the work in front of you, trusting that matters more than anxious waiting.
"Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: "
""So stay alert, because you don't know when the owner of the house will come back - it could be evening, midnight, when the rooster crows, or morning.""
I want you living with the same steady readiness whether it feels like the "right moment" or not - don't let unpredictability become an excuse to switch off. Consistency matters more than correctly guessing the timing.
"Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. "
""Don't let him arrive suddenly and find you asleep.""
I don't want you drifting into carelessness just because things feel calm right now - complacency is the real risk I'm warning you about, not literal tiredness. Stay engaged with what matters, even when nothing seems urgent.
"And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch. "
""And what I'm telling you, I'm telling everyone: stay awake.""
This final word is for you too, whoever you are, however you found these words - stay awake to what matters in your own life. That's the one instruction I want you to carry out of this entire conversation.
