Joshua Chapter 13
Showing all 33 verses for Joshua Chapter 13.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"Now Joshua was old and stricken in years; and the LORD said unto him, Thou art old and stricken in years, and there remaineth yet very much land to be possessed. "
"By this time Joshua was old, well on in years. The LORD said to him, 'You are old, advanced in years, and there is still a great deal of land left to be taken.'"
Even a faithful leader grows old, and I am honest with Joshua about it rather than pretending the work is finished. Growing older or running out of strength doesn't mean my purposes stop - it simply means the task now needs to be shared, planned for and handed on with wisdom.
"This is the land that yet remaineth: all the borders of the Philistines, and all Geshuri, "
"This is the land still remaining: the whole territory of the Philistines, and all of Geshur,"
There was still very much land left unconquered even after all Joshua's victories - the work of faith is rarely finished all at once. Don't measure yourself by how much remains undone; measure yourself by whether you're still walking forward in obedience.
"From Sihor, which is before Egypt, even unto the borders of Ekron northward, which is counted to the Canaanite: five lords of the Philistines; the Gazathites, and the Ashdothites, the Eshkalonites, the Gittites, and the Ekronites; also the Avites: "
"from the Shihor River east of Egypt, north to the border of Ekron (counted as Canaanite territory) - the land of the five Philistine rulers: Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath and Ekron - plus the territory of the Avvites;"
I name the five Philistine lords specifically because I know exactly who and what stands against my people. Naming your struggles honestly, rather than vaguely fearing them, is the first step towards facing them with me at your side.
"From the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that is beside the Sidonians unto Aphek, to the borders of the Amorites: "
"from the south, all the Canaanite territory, and Mearah which belongs to the Sidonians, as far as Aphek, to the border of the Amorites;"
The Canaanites and Amorites still occupied land I had already promised Israel - the gap between promise and full possession can feel long. Trust that a promise delayed is not a promise broken; keep walking towards it.
"And the land of the Giblites, and all Lebanon, toward the sunrising, from Baalgad under mount Hermon unto the entering into Hamath. "
"and the land of the Gebalites, and all of Lebanon towards the east, from Baal-gad below Mount Hermon to the entrance of Hamath."
Lebanon and the land towards Hamath remained outside Israel's grasp for now, part of what was still to come. I am patient with unfinished business in your life too - what isn't complete today is not forgotten by me.
"All the inhabitants of the hill country from Lebanon unto Misrephothmaim, and all the Sidonians, them will I drive out from before the children of Israel: only divide thou it by lot unto the Israelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee. "
"As for all the people living in the hill country from Lebanon to Misrephoth-maim, and all the Sidonians - I myself will drive them out ahead of the Israelites. Just make sure you divide this land by lot to Israel as an inheritance, as I have commanded you."
I promise Joshua that I myself will drive out the remaining inhabitants - the responsibility to finish isn't Israel's alone to carry. Whatever feels too big for you to overcome, remember that I am willing to fight alongside you, not just watch from a distance.
"Now therefore divide this land for an inheritance unto the nine tribes, and the half tribe of Manasseh, "
"So now, divide this land as an inheritance for the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh."
I tell Joshua to divide the land by faith before it is even fully possessed, trusting the outcome to me. Sometimes I ask you to plan and act as though the promise is already secured, because your obedience today is part of how it becomes real.
"With whom the Reubenites and the Gadites have received their inheritance, which Moses gave them, beyond Jordan eastward, even as Moses the servant of the LORD gave them; "
"Along with the other half of Manasseh, the Reubenites and Gadites had already received their inheritance, which Moses had given them on the east side of the Jordan, just as Moses the servant of the LORD had assigned it to them."
Reuben and Gad had already received what Moses gave them before Joshua even began this new division - some blessings arrive earlier than others, through different servants, at different times. Don't compare your timeline to anyone else's; trust the timing I have for you specifically.
"From Aroer, that is upon the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain of Medeba unto Dibon; "
"from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon gorge, and the town in the middle of the gorge, and the whole plateau of Medeba as far as Dibon;"
Every border here, down to a single city in the middle of a river, is recorded precisely. I care about exact boundaries in your life too - the lines of what is entrusted to you are not vague to me, even when they feel unclear to you.
"And all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, unto the border of the children of Ammon; "
"and all the towns of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who had ruled from Heshbon, as far as the border of the Ammonites;"
All the cities that once belonged to Sihon now belong to Israel, boundary by boundary, right up to Ammon's border. What was once held by opposition can become, through faithful obedience, part of what I give to my people.
"And Gilead, and the border of the Geshurites and Maachathites, and all mount Hermon, and all Bashan unto Salcah; "
"and Gilead, and the territory of the Geshurites and Maachathites, and all of Mount Hermon, and all of Bashan as far as Salecah;"
Gilead, the Geshurites' and Maachathites' borders, all of Hermon and Bashan to Salcah - a vast stretch, precisely mapped. Even territory you'll later read was never fully driven out still belonged, in principle, to the promise; incomplete obedience doesn't cancel my intention.
"All the kingdom of Og in Bashan, which reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei, who remained of the remnant of the giants: for these did Moses smite, and cast them out. "
"the whole kingdom of Og in Bashan, who had reigned in Ashtaroth and Edrei and was one of the last of the Rephaim (a people remembered for their unusual size) - for Moses had defeated these and driven them out."
Og's whole kingdom, ruled by one of the last of the giants, now belongs to Israel because Moses struck him down and drove him out. Whatever giant looms largest over your family's history can still be overcome in your generation, even if it took someone before you to begin the fight.
"Nevertheless the children of Israel expelled not the Geshurites, nor the Maachathites: but the Geshurites and the Maachathites dwell among the Israelites until this day. "
"However, the Israelites did not drive out the Geshurites or the Maachathites; they still live among the Israelites to this day."
Israel didn't fully drive out the Geshurites and Maachathites, and they remained living among them right up to the writing of this account. Incomplete obedience has consequences that linger - be honest with yourself about what you've left unfinished rather than assuming it simply disappears.
"Only unto the tribe of Levi he gave none inheritance; the sacrifices of the LORD God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as he said unto them. "
"Only to the tribe of Levi did he give no inheritance of land; the offerings made by fire to the LORD, the God of Israel, are their inheritance, just as he had told them."
The Levites received no land of their own - their inheritance was me and the offerings made in my name. There is a way of living where your security isn't found in property or status at all, but simply in belonging to me; that is enough.
"And Moses gave unto the tribe of the children of Reuben inheritance according to their families. "
"Moses gave territory to the tribe of Reuben, family by family."
Reuben's inheritance is given by families, not just to a tribe in the abstract - I care about each household within the larger group. Whatever wider community you belong to, I still see and provide for your own family specifically.
"And their coast was from Aroer, that is on the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain by Medeba; "
"Their territory was from Aroer on the edge of the Arnon gorge, and the town in the middle of the gorge, and the whole plateau by Medeba;"
The boundary begins again at Aroer and the plain by Medeba, exact as before, because repetition doesn't make a promise less true. Some truths are worth hearing more than once - don't grow numb to a promise simply because you've heard it before.
"Heshbon, and all her cities that are in the plain; Dibon, and Bamothbaal, and Bethbaalmeon, "
"Heshbon, and all its towns on the plateau: Dibon, Bamoth-baal, Beth-baal-meon,"
Heshbon and its surrounding cities, Dibon, Bamothbaal, Bethbaalmeon - some of these names carry the marks of old idols within them, yet the land itself is now given over to my people. What was once shaped by false worship can be reclaimed and repurposed for something true.
"And Jahaza, and Kedemoth, and Mephaath, "
"Jahaz, Kedemoth, Mephaath,"
Jahaza, Kedemoth, Mephaath - unfamiliar names to most readers, yet each was a real inheritance for a real family in Reuben. Don't discount the parts of your own story that feel too small or obscure for anyone else to notice; they still matter.
"And Kirjathaim, and Sibmah, and Zarethshahar in the mount of the valley, "
"Kiriathaim, Sibmah, Zereth-shahar on the hill in the valley,"
Kirjathaim, Sibmah, Zarethshahar - the detail continues without shortcuts, because thoroughness matters to me even when no one is watching closely. Do your own work with the same care, even in the unglamorous parts nobody else will ever read closely.
"And Bethpeor, and Ashdothpisgah, and Bethjeshimoth, "
"Beth-peor, the slopes of Pisgah, and Beth-jeshimoth,"
Bethpeor, Ashdothpisgah, Bethjeshimoth - this is the very region where Balaam once tried to curse Israel and failed, and where Moses later died looking over the promised land. Places heavy with past struggle can still become places of settled inheritance.
"And all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses smote with the princes of Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, which were dukes of Sihon, dwelling in the country. "
"all the towns of the plateau, and the whole kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses had defeated along with the chiefs of Midian - Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba - who were Sihon's allies living in the region."
Sihon's princes and even Balaam the soothsayer are named among those defeated - those who opposed or tried to manipulate my purposes for money did not escape judgement. Seeking to twist truth for personal gain never ends well, however clever the scheme looks at first.
"Balaam also the son of Beor, the soothsayer, did the children of Israel slay with the sword among them that were slain by them. "
"The Israelites also killed Balaam son of Beor, the fortune-teller, along with the others slain in that battle."
Balaam is remembered here as a soothsayer, someone who used spiritual gifts for the wrong purposes and paid the price. Whatever gifts you carry, use them for truth and blessing, not for manipulation or personal profit - it's the only way they'll bear good fruit.
"And the border of the children of Reuben was Jordan, and the border thereof. This was the inheritance of the children of Reuben after their families, the cities and the villages thereof. "
"The border of the Reubenites was the Jordan River and its banks. This was the inheritance of the Reubenites, family by family, including its towns and villages."
Jordan itself becomes Reuben's western border - a natural boundary, not one Israel had to invent or defend on their own. Sometimes the limits placed around your life are simply part of how I've shaped the world, not a punishment or a lack of trust.
"And Moses gave inheritance unto the tribe of Gad, even unto the children of Gad according to their families. "
"Moses also gave territory to the tribe of Gad, family by family."
Gad's inheritance is given the same careful, family-by-family attention as Reuben's before it. No tribe is treated as an afterthought in my record-keeping - each one receives full, deliberate attention.
"And their coast was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the children of Ammon, unto Aroer that is before Rabbah; "
"Their territory was Jazer, all the towns of Gilead, half the land of the Ammonites, as far as Aroer near Rabbah;"
Jazer, Gilead, half of Ammon's former land - Gad's border reaches right up to Rabbah, a city that would matter again generations later. What is given to you now may still connect to events far in your future that you cannot yet foresee.
"And from Heshbon unto Ramathmizpeh, and Betonim; and from Mahanaim unto the border of Debir; "
"and from Heshbon to Ramath-mizpeh and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the border of Debir;"
The border winds from Heshbon to Ramathmizpeh and on to the border of Debir - a careful, unbroken line. My care for you traces just as unbroken a line through your life, even through all its twists and turns.
"And in the valley, Betharam, and Bethnimrah, and Succoth, and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, Jordan and his border, even unto the edge of the sea of Chinnereth on the other side Jordan eastward. "
"and in the valley: Beth-haram, Beth-nimrah, Succoth and Zaphon, the rest of the kingdom of Sihon king of Heshbon, with the Jordan as a border, up to the tip of the Sea of Galilee, on the east side of the Jordan."
Gad's inheritance stretches down into the valley, all the way to the edge of the Sea of Chinnereth. Fertile, well-watered land was part of Gad's reward for faithfully fighting alongside their brothers first, even though their own land lay elsewhere - loyalty to the wider family is honoured, not overlooked.
"This is the inheritance of the children of Gad after their families, the cities, and their villages. "
"This was the inheritance of the Gadites, family by family, including its towns and villages."
Gad's inheritance is confirmed and closed out here, cities and villages named in full. When I finish giving something to you, I finish it completely - nothing half-given, nothing left dangling.
"And Moses gave inheritance unto the half tribe of Manasseh: and this was the possession of the half tribe of the children of Manasseh by their families. "
"Moses also gave territory to the half-tribe of Manasseh: this was the possession of the half-tribe of Manasseh, family by family."
Now it's the half-tribe of Manasseh's turn, family by family, just as thoroughly as the tribes before them. Being only 'half' a tribe never meant receiving half the care - I give my full attention to every portion of my people, however it's divided.
"And their coast was from Mahanaim, all Bashan, all the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all the towns of Jair, which are in Bashan, threescore cities: "
"Their territory was from Mahanaim: all of Bashan, the whole kingdom of Og king of Bashan, and all sixty of the settlements of Jair in Bashan;"
All of Bashan, all of Og's former kingdom, sixty towns belonging to Jair - a vast and generous inheritance for this half-tribe. What I give is often more than what was asked for; don't be afraid to receive generously when I choose to give generously.
"And half Gilead, and Ashtaroth, and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan, were pertaining unto the children of Machir the son of Manasseh, even to the one half of the children of Machir by their families. "
"and half of Gilead, and Ashtaroth and Edrei, the royal cities of Og's kingdom in Bashan - these went to the descendants of Makir son of Manasseh, for half of the Makirites, family by family."
Half of Gilead, Ashtaroth, Edrei - cities once ruled by the giant king Og, now belonging to the children of Machir. What was once a stronghold of fear becomes, through faithful conquest, simply home for an ordinary family line.
"These are the countries which Moses did distribute for inheritance in the plains of Moab, on the other side Jordan, by Jericho, eastward. "
"These are the territories that Moses distributed as an inheritance in the plains of Moab, across the Jordan from Jericho, to the east."
This closing verse simply confirms that all of it was Moses' doing, distributed in the plains of Moab before Israel ever crossed the Jordan. Faithful work done before you arrived still shapes the ground you now stand on - honour what was laid before you rather than assuming you're starting from nothing.
"But unto the tribe of Levi Moses gave not any inheritance: the LORD God of Israel was their inheritance, as he said unto them. "
"But to the tribe of Levi, Moses gave no inheritance of land: the LORD, the God of Israel, was their inheritance, just as he had told them."
The chapter closes exactly as it noted before: the Levites received no land, because I myself was their inheritance. Some of the richest lives are the ones that hold least in property but most in closeness to me - don't measure your worth by what you own.
