Hebrews Chapter 9
Showing all 28 verses for Hebrews Chapter 9.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service, and a worldly sanctuary. "
"So then, the first agreement did have its own rules for worship, and an earthly, physical holy place set up for it."
I don't ask you to trash what came before in order to value what's new. Understanding where you've come from with honesty and respect is part of appreciating where you're going.
"For there was a tabernacle made; the first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the shewbread; which is called the sanctuary. "
"A tent-structure was made: the first section contained the lampstand, the table, and the special bread set out on it - this section was called the Holy Place."
Even ordinary, repeated acts of devotion have their place - not everything meaningful has to be a once-in-a-lifetime dramatic moment. Small, steady faithfulness matters, even while something far greater is still to come.
"And after the second veil, the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all; "
"Then, behind the second curtain, was the section called the Most Holy Place."
I know that in the past, getting close to what's most sacred felt heavily guarded and out of reach for ordinary people. I came precisely to take that barrier down, not to add another one.
"Which had the golden censer, and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold, wherein was the golden pot that had manna, and Aaronβs rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant; "
"It contained the gold incense altar, and the ark of the covenant - completely covered in gold - which held the gold jar of manna, Aaron's staff that had budded, and the stone tablets of the covenant."
Remembering the times you were carried through hardship isn't nostalgia for its own sake - it's fuel for trusting what's ahead. Keep your own reminders of past faithfulness close; they matter.
"And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercyseat; of which we cannot now speak particularly. "
"Above the ark stood the glorious cherubim, their wings stretched out over the place of atonement - but we don't have space to go into detail about all of this right now."
Sometimes the details matter less than the direction of the story. I'd rather you grasp the big truth - that there is a real place where mercy meets need - than get lost trying to master every symbol along the way.
"Now when these things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the first tabernacle, accomplishing the service of God. "
"With everything arranged like this, the priests would regularly go into the first, outer section to carry out their everyday duties."
Faithful service doesn't always look dramatic. Showing up consistently to do the quiet, repeated work of care and devotion is real and valuable, even if no one's watching and it isn't the main event.
"But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people: "
"But only the high priest could go into the second, inner section, and only once a year - and even then, never without bringing blood, which he offered for his own wrongdoing and for the sins the people had committed unintentionally."
I know how heavy it feels when you sense that access to real peace and forgiveness is rare, guarded, and something only handled once a year by someone else on your behalf. That's exactly the kind of distance I came to close for good.
"The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: "
"By this, the Holy Spirit was showing that the way into the Most Holy Place hadn't yet been opened up, as long as the outer tent system was still standing and in use."
Sometimes the structures we build to manage a problem end up proving the problem is still unsolved. I didn't come to manage the barrier better - I came to take it down completely.
"Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience; "
"This was a symbol for the time then present, showing that the gifts and sacrifices being offered could never actually make the person performing that service completely clean on the inside, in their conscience."
You can follow every outward rule perfectly and still feel unclean inside - I know that ache well. What I offer isn't another checklist to tick; it's something that actually reaches the part of you that keeps quietly accusing yourself.
"Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation. "
"These regulations were only ever about food and drink, various ritual washings, and other physical rules imposed until the time came for everything to be put right."
Rules about the outside of your life were never meant to be the finish line. I care about what's happening in you, not just what you avoid touching or eating - real transformation goes deeper than any checklist.
"But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building; "
"But Christ has now come as high priest of the good things that have arrived, going through a greater and more perfect tent - one not made by human hands, meaning not part of this created world at all."
What I offer isn't built from human effort, tradition, or craftsmanship - it comes from somewhere no human system could ever construct. You don't need to build your way to me; I've already come to you.
"Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. "
"He entered the Most Holy Place once and for all - not carrying the blood of goats and calves, but his own blood - and by doing so he secured an everlasting freedom for us."
You don't need to keep earning your freedom over and over, exhausting yourself trying to make up for the same failures again and again. What I did was enough, once, for good - you can actually rest in that instead of running on a treadmill of guilt.
"For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: "
"For if the blood of bulls and goats, and the ashes of a young cow sprinkled on those who were ritually unclean, could make people outwardly, ceremonially clean again..."
I take seriously that people have always looked for ways to feel clean and acceptable again. I'm not dismissing that need as unimportant - I'm here to meet it far more completely than any ritual ever could.
"How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? "
"...then how much more will the blood of Christ - who, through the eternal Spirit, offered himself to God without any flaw - cleanse your conscience from lifeless deeds, so that you can serve the living God?"
I don't want you working yourself into exhaustion trying to prove you're good enough. Let go of the guilt-driven striving - I've already dealt with what was weighing on your conscience, so you're free to act out of love instead of fear.
"And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. "
"This is why he acts as the go-between of a new agreement: so that, through his death, which paid the price for the wrongs committed under the first agreement, everyone who has been called can receive the eternal inheritance that was promised."
What's ahead for you isn't a debt you owe - it's an inheritance, a gift already secured on your behalf. You don't need to strive to deserve it; you only need to receive it.
"For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. "
"Because wherever there is a will (a legal document leaving an inheritance), the death of the person who made it has to be established first."
I didn't just make you a promise and leave it open to change. I sealed it with my own life, so that what's coming to you is settled and certain, not conditional on anything else happening first.
"For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth. "
"A will only takes legal effect after the person has died - it carries no power at all while the one who made it is still alive."
What I promised you isn't a wish or a plan still waiting to be finalised. It's already been sealed and put into full effect - you can build your life on it as something certain, not something pending.
"Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood. "
"This is why even the first agreement wasn't put into effect without blood."
Serious commitments have always required more than words - they need something genuinely given up to back them. I didn't ask that of you without first showing you exactly what that kind of commitment looks like myself.
"For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, "
"When Moses had finished announcing every commandment of the law to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, along with water, scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the scroll of the law itself and all the people."
Agreements matter enough to be sealed properly, not just spoken lightly. What I've done for you was sealed just as seriously - with everything I had, not with easy or empty words.
"Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. "
"He said, 'This is the blood of the agreement that God has commanded you to keep.'"
When I spoke of my blood at that final meal with my friends, I was pointing straight back to this ancient moment - showing that what I was doing was sealing a new, better agreement in exactly the same serious way, but this time, for good.
"Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. "
"In the same way, he sprinkled blood on the tabernacle itself and on all the equipment used in its services."
Nothing was left untouched by the seriousness of that ancient covenant - and nothing in your life is too ordinary or overlooked for what I've done to reach either.
"And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission. "
"In fact, under the law, almost everything is purified by blood, and without blood being shed, there is no forgiveness."
Forgiveness was never meant to be cheap or automatic, as if wrongdoing carried no weight at all. I take what you've done seriously enough to have paid the real cost myself, precisely so you don't have to carry it.
"It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. "
"So it was necessary for the earthly copies of the heavenly realities to be purified using these animal sacrifices - but the heavenly realities themselves needed far better sacrifices than these."
What was good enough to point towards the truth isn't the same as what was needed to actually reach it. I am that better sacrifice - not a bigger version of the old system, but something the old system was only ever gesturing towards.
"For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: "
"For Christ has not entered a holy place made by human hands, which was only ever a copy of the true one - he has entered heaven itself, and now appears in God's own presence on our behalf."
I'm not managing your case from far away or through an intermediary. I am there, right now, representing you personally in the place that matters most - you are never unrepresented.
"Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; "
"And he did not need to offer himself repeatedly, the way the high priest enters the holy place every single year carrying the blood of another creature."
You don't have to keep coming back to square one, repeating the same cycle of guilt and temporary relief. What was done for you was done completely - you're free to move forward, not stuck repeating the past.
"For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. "
"Otherwise he would have had to suffer many times since the world began - but instead, he has appeared once, at the culmination of the ages, to remove sin through the sacrifice of himself."
What I did wasn't a partial fix requiring endless repetition. It was complete, once, at exactly the right time - you can trust that it's truly finished, not something still hanging in the balance.
"And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: "
"And just as everyone is destined to die once, and after that comes judgement..."
I don't want you to be afraid of facing the truth about your life. Living honestly, without denial, is part of real freedom - and I've already dealt with what you might otherwise fear meeting on the other side of that reckoning.
"So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. "
"...so Christ also was offered once to take away the sins of many people, and he will appear a second time - not to deal with sin again, but to bring complete salvation to those who are eagerly waiting for him."
I'm not coming back to finish unfinished business or deal with sin all over again - that part is done. I'm coming back to bring you home, so keep watching with hope, not anxiety, because what's ahead is good news, not a second reckoning.
