Galatians Chapter 5
Showing all 26 verses for Galatians Chapter 5.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. "
"Stand firm, then, in the freedom Christ has set us free for, and don't let yourselves get tangled up again in slavery."
I set you free on purpose, not so you could drift back into a cage that feels familiar. Stand firm β freedom takes as much courage to keep as it did to receive.
"Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. "
"Listen β I, Paul, tell you plainly: if you get circumcised, Christ will be of no benefit to you at all."
You can't add a "just in case" performance clause to grace without cancelling it out. Trust me completely, or trust your own effort completely β you can't do both.
"For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. "
"I'll say it again to every man who gets circumcised for this reason: he is now obligated to keep the entire law."
You can't cherry-pick which rules "count" towards earning my approval β that whole approach collapses the moment you try it seriously. That's exactly why I offer you something else entirely: grace.
"Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. "
"You who are trying to be made right with God through law-keeping have cut yourselves off from Christ β you have fallen away from grace."
Don't hedge your bets between grace and self-effort β it doesn't work like an insurance policy. I want your whole trust, because that's the only place real rest is found.
"For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. "
"For it's through the Spirit, by faith, that we eagerly wait for the righteousness we hope for."
You don't have to constantly chase a sense of being "good enough." Rest into hope instead of grinding towards it β I'm the one bringing it to completion.
"For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. "
"Because in Christ Jesus, neither being circumcised nor not being circumcised means anything β what matters is faith expressing itself through love."
I'm not counting your religious credentials. I'm watching whether your trust in me is actually turning into love for the people around you β that's the real evidence.
"Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? "
"You were running the race well β who cut in on you and stopped you obeying the truth?"
When you notice your progress stalling, it's worth asking honestly who or what got in your way. Naming the obstacle is the first step to getting back on course.
"This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you. "
"This kind of persuasion doesn't come from the one who called you."
Not everything that sounds religious or urgent actually comes from me. Test what's pulling at you against what you know of my character β freedom, love, and grace.
"A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. "
"A little yeast works its way through the whole batch of dough."
Don't dismiss a small inconsistency in what you believe as harmless. Left unchecked, small distortions quietly reshape everything else β deal with them early.
"I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be. "
"I'm confident, because of my trust in the Lord, that you will not think any differently β but whoever is confusing you will bear the consequences, whoever they are."
I hold onto hope for you even in your confusion, while still taking seriously the harm caused by those who mislead you. Both things are true at once β grace for you, accountability for them.
"And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased. "
π‘ Highlighted words feature Jacobean 1611 tooltips to clarify shifted 17th-century English terms.
"And as for me, brothers and sisters β if I were still preaching circumcision, why would I still be facing persecution? In that case, the offence of the cross would have disappeared."
The message that you're loved and accepted as a gift, not a wage, will always unsettle people invested in earning their worth. Don't be surprised when grace itself causes friction.
"I would they were even cut off which trouble you. "
"As for those who are upsetting you β I wish they would go all the way and castrate themselves."
I'm not offended by strong, honest emotion when it's rooted in protecting people from harm. Passion against something genuinely damaging isn't a lack of love β sometimes it's evidence of it.
"For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. "
"For you, brothers and sisters, were called to freedom β just don't use that freedom as an excuse to indulge your selfish desires; instead, serve one another through love."
Real freedom isn't about serving only yourself β that's just another kind of trap. I set you free precisely so you'd have the capacity to love others well, without resentment or self-interest getting in the way.
"For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. "
"For the entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbour as yourself.""
If you want to know whether you're living rightly, don't check a rulebook first β ask whether you're loving the person in front of you as much as you care about yourself.
"But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. "
"But if you go on biting and tearing at each other, watch out β you'll end up destroying one another."
Constant criticism and conflict within a community, even over important disagreements, can quietly destroy everyone involved. Choose to build each other up, even in disagreement.
"This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. "
"So I say this: live guided by the Spirit, and you won't carry out what your selfish nature craves."
You don't win the fight against your worst impulses by gritting your teeth harder β you win it by staying close to me and letting that closeness redirect you.
"For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. "
"Because the flesh wants what's against the Spirit, and the Spirit wants what's against the flesh β they're opposed to each other, so that you don't do the things you'd otherwise want to do."
That tension you feel between what you want in the moment and who you actually want to be isn't a sign of failure β it's the normal shape of growth. I'm present in that very struggle with you.
"But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. "
"But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law."
When you're genuinely following my lead, you're not ticking boxes anymore β you're responding, moment by moment, out of relationship rather than obligation.
"Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, "
"Now it's obvious what comes from selfish human nature: sexual immorality, moral impurity, and shameless indecency."
I'm not naming these things to condemn you but to help you recognise what genuinely damages you and others. Awareness is the first step towards real change, not guilt for its own sake.
"Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, "
"Idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, conflict, jealousy, rage, selfish ambition, division, and separating into factions."
Notice how much of what damages a community isn't dramatic scandal but ordinary jealousy, rivalry, and factionalism. Guard your heart against those just as seriously as against anything more obvious.
"Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. "
"Envy, murder, drunkenness, wild parties, and things like these β I warn you now, as I warned you before, that people who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God."
I'm not tallying isolated slip-ups against you β what concerns me is the direction your whole life is pointed. A pattern of harm to yourself and others is worth taking seriously, not dismissing.
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, "
"But the fruit produced by the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness."
You don't have to force these qualities into existence through sheer effort β they grow in you naturally the more your life stays rooted in me. Focus on the connection, not the performance.
"Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. "
"Gentleness, self-control β there is no law against things like these."
When your life is genuinely shaped by love and self-control, you're not straining against rules β you've moved beyond needing them, because you're already living what they were pointing to.
"And they that are Christβs have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. "
"And those who belong to Christ have crucified their selfish human nature, along with its passions and desires."
You are not who your worst impulses say you are. Something genuinely died in you when you gave your life to me β hold onto that new identity, especially when the old pull resurfaces.
"If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. "
"If we live by the Spirit, let's also walk in step with the Spirit."
Don't let the reality of new life in you stay theoretical β let it show up in how you actually move through each day, in step with me rather than out ahead or lagging behind.
"Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. "
"Let's not become conceited, provoking one another and envying one another."
Watch for the quiet comparison games you play with people around you β measuring your worth against theirs. Let that go; it only breeds resentment on both sides.
