Deuteronomy Chapter 30
Showing all 20 verses for Deuteronomy Chapter 30.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before thee, and thou shalt call them to mind among all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath driven thee, "
""When all these things happen to you - the blessing and the curse I have set before you - and you remember them while you are among the nations where the LORD your God has driven you,""
I told Israel in advance that even in exile among the nations, they would remember both the blessing and the curse, because remembering is the first step back towards me. Wherever your choices have scattered you, the memory of what is true still has the power to call you home.
"And shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul; "
""and you return to the LORD your God and obey him, just as I am commanding you today, you and your children, with all your heart and all your soul,""
Return is described here as wholehearted - not half-measures, but obeying with all your heart and soul. I do not want partial devotion; I want the whole of you turned back towards me, and I meet that kind of return every single time.
"That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee. "
""then the LORD your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you, and he will gather you again from all the nations where he scattered you.""
I promise to turn captivity itself and gather my people back with compassion, not resentment for the years lost. When you return to me after wandering, expect compassion, not a lecture - I am already running to meet you.
"If any of thine be driven out unto the outmost parts of heaven, from thence will the LORD thy God gather thee, and from thence will he fetch thee: "
""Even if you have been scattered to the furthest edges of the earth, the LORD your God will gather you and bring you back from there.""
Even scattered to the furthest edge of the sky, I promise to gather my people from there - no distance, physical or spiritual, is beyond my reach to bring you back. However far you feel you have wandered, you are never too far for me to find you.
"And the LORD thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; and he will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers. "
""The LORD your God will bring you into the land your ancestors possessed, and you will possess it again; he will do good to you and make you even more numerous than your ancestors.""
Restoration in my hands is not merely a return to where you started, but multiplication beyond it - I do more good for you than your fathers ever knew. Do not expect me to simply undo the damage; expect me to build something better than before.
"And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live. "
""The LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the hearts of your descendants, so that you will love the LORD your God with all your heart and all your soul, and so that you may live.""
I promise to circumcise the heart itself, doing the inward work that no ritual alone could accomplish - real love for me starts with a change only I can perform within you. Ask me to change your heart from the inside, not just your outward behaviour.
"And the LORD thy God will put all these curses upon thine enemies, and on them that hate thee, which persecuted thee. "
""And the LORD your God will put all these curses on your enemies and on those who hated and persecuted you.""
The same curses once threatened against Israel would instead fall on those who persecuted them - I take the mistreatment of my people personally, and justice eventually catches up with those who cause harm. Trust me to handle what has been done against you; vengeance is not yours to carry.
"And thou shalt return and obey the voice of the LORD, and do all his commandments which I command thee this day. "
""You will again obey the LORD and follow all his commandments that I am giving you today.""
Return and obedience go together again here - not obedience first earning love, but obedience flowing naturally out of a heart that has come back to me. Once you have truly returned to me, doing what I ask stops feeling like a burden and starts feeling like relief.
"And the LORD thy God will make thee plenteous in every work of thine hand, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, for good: for the LORD will again rejoice over thee for good, as he rejoiced over thy fathers: "
""The LORD your God will make you prosper abundantly in everything you do - in your children, your livestock, and your crops - because the LORD will again delight in your prosperity, just as he delighted in your ancestors' prosperity.""
I promise to rejoice over my people for good just as I rejoiced over their fathers - I take genuine delight in your flourishing, not grudging tolerance of it. Know that my heart towards your wellbeing is joyful, not reluctant.
"If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law, and if thou turn unto the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul. "
""This will happen if you listen to the LORD your God, keeping his commandments and rules written in this book of the law, and if you turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and all your soul.""
Hearkening and turning with all the heart are named together again as the whole condition for blessing - I am consistent, repeating what genuinely matters rather than adding new demands. What I ask of you has never really changed: listen, and turn to me fully.
"For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off. "
""This command that I am giving you today is not too difficult for you, and it is not beyond your reach.""
I insist that what I command is not hidden or distant - I have never asked you to chase down some impossible mystery to find me. What I ask of you is knowable and near; you do not need special access or secret knowledge to obey me.
"It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? "
""It is not up in heaven, so that you need to say, 'Who will go up to heaven to get it for us and explain it to us, so we can follow it?'""
No one needs to ascend to heaven to bring my word down - I have already brought it near to you myself. Stop searching for me in distant, dramatic places; I have already come close enough to be found.
"Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? "
""It is not beyond the sea, so that you need to say, 'Who will cross the sea for us to get it and explain it to us, so we can follow it?'""
Nor does my word lie beyond some impassable sea - it is not locked away where only the bold explorer can reach it. Whatever obstacle feels too vast between you and me, I have already crossed it to bring my word within your reach.
"But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it. "
""No, the word is very near to you - it is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.""
My word is near you - in your mouth and in your heart - so that doing it is genuinely within reach, not a distant aspiration. What you need to obey me is already available to you right now; you do not have to wait for some future readiness.
"See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil; "
""Look - I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and disaster.""
I lay life and good, death and evil plainly before you, because I want you to choose with open eyes, not stumble into consequences unaware. I always give you the clarity to choose well; the choice itself remains genuinely yours.
"In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it. "
""I am commanding you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments, statutes, and rules, so that you may live and increase in number, and so that the LORD your God may bless you in the land you are entering to possess.""
Loving me, walking in my ways, and keeping my commandments are bound together with the promise of life and blessing - obedience was never meant to restrict you but to lead you towards flourishing. Walking with me is the path towards the very life you actually want.
"But if thine heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; "
""But if your heart turns away and you refuse to listen, and you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and serve them,""
The warning here is gentle but honest - a heart that quietly turns away and drifts towards other gods does real harm, even without dramatic rebellion. Watch for the slow drift in your own heart, not just the obvious wrong turn.
"I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it. "
""I declare to you today that you will certainly be destroyed - you will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.""
I state plainly what following other gods leads to - not to frighten you into obedience, but because I would rather you know the truth clearly than discover it too late. Honesty about consequences is itself an act of love.
"I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: "
""I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today: I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Now choose life, so that you and your descendants may live,""
I call heaven and earth themselves to witness this choice, because I want you to feel the full weight of it - then I tell you plainly which one to pick: choose life. I am never neutral about which way I hope you go; I am rooting for you to choose life every time.
"That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them. "
""by loving the LORD your God, listening to his voice, and holding fast to him - for he is your life, and the length of your days, so that you may live in the land the LORD swore to give to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.""
Loving me, obeying me, and clinging to me are described together as your actual life and the length of your days - not burdens added on top of living, but the very substance of a full life. I am not asking you to sacrifice living in order to follow me; following me is how you truly live.
