Romans Chapter 9
Showing all 33 verses for Romans Chapter 9.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost, "
"I'm telling you the truth as someone united with Christ - I'm not lying - and my own conscience, guided by the Holy Spirit, backs me up."
When something matters enough to hurt, say so plainly and honestly rather than hiding behind detachment. I value people who speak from genuine conviction, not performance.
"That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. "
"I carry deep, constant sorrow and heaviness in my heart."
It's alright to grieve deeply over people you love who haven't found the life I'm offering - that ache is not weakness, it's love doing its work. Don't numb yourself to it; let it move you towards them, not away.
"For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh: "
"I could almost wish I myself were cut off from Christ, if it meant it would save my own people, my fellow Jews."
Real love sometimes wishes it could trade places with the people you care about, even when it can't. That impulse - wanting someone else's rescue more than your own comfort - is close to the heart of what I'm like.
"Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises; "
"They are Israelites - people who have the adoption as God's own, the visible glory of his presence, the covenants, the law given to them, the proper worship of God, and the promises."
Having every advantage - a good upbringing, the right knowledge, the right community - doesn't automatically produce the response of trust I'm looking for. Privilege isn't the same as relationship; don't assume one guarantees the other.
"Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen. "
"The great ancestors belong to them, and from them, in his human descent, Christ himself came - who is God over everything, blessed forever. Amen."
Where someone comes from can carry real significance - but I came from a real family line, a real people, real history. I don't float above human experience; I entered fully into it.
"Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: "
"This doesn't mean God's promise has failed. Because not everyone who is descended from Israel is truly "Israel" in the sense that matters."
Belonging to me was never just about being born into the right family, culture, or tradition - it's about a real, living connection with me. Don't coast on inherited identity; make it your own.
"Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. "
"And just being Abraham's physical descendants doesn't make them all his true children either - as Scripture says, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.""
What matters to me is the promise you're walking in, not simply the family tree you were born into. I choose to work through particular relationships and callings, not blanket inheritance.
"That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed. "
"In other words, it's not the children born in the ordinary way who are automatically God's children - it's the children born through God's promise who count as the true offspring."
Don't try to manufacture your own spiritual standing through effort or striving - real belonging comes from trusting my promise, not forcing an outcome on your own timetable. Let me do the impossible thing rather than rushing ahead of me.
"For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sarah shall have a son. "
"Because this was the actual promise God spoke: "At this time I will come, and Sarah will have a son.""
When something feels impossible in your life, that doesn't put it beyond my reach - I specialise in doing exactly what looks impossible, right on time. Trust the promise even when the natural odds are against it.
"And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac; "
"And it's not only that - there's also the case of Rebecca, who conceived children by one father, our ancestor Isaac."
I don't play favourites based on circumstances of birth or background - my choices about who I call and use aren't decided by things you had no control over. Don't assume your starting point determines your worth to me.
"(For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) "
"Before the twins were even born, before either had done anything good or bad, so that God's choice - his purpose in choosing - would stand on its own, not based on what they'd done, but simply on his own calling."
You don't have to perform your way into being noticed or chosen by me - I already know and care about you before you've proven anything. That takes the pressure off trying to earn a place you already have.
"It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. "
"It was said to her (Rebecca): "The older will serve the younger.""
I'm not bound by the pecking order the world assumes matters - status, birth order, seniority. I regularly work through the overlooked and the unexpected; don't assume you know in advance who I'll use.
"As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. "
"As Scripture says: "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.""
I work with real purposes for real people and communities, purposes that don't always match what looks fair from the outside at first glance. Trust that my choices, even the puzzling ones, come from wisdom, not arbitrary cruelty.
"What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid. "
"So what should we conclude from this? Is God being unfair? Absolutely not."
It's fine to bring me your hardest, most honest questions about fairness - I'm not threatened by them. But trust that my character is good even when my methods are beyond your full understanding.
"For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. "
"Because God said to Moses: "I will show mercy to whoever I choose to show mercy, and I will show compassion to whoever I choose to show compassion.""
You'll never be able to calculate your way into deserving my mercy - and that's actually good news, because it means it's never out of reach either. Stop trying to earn what was always meant to be given freely.
"So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. "
"So then, it doesn't depend on human desire or human effort, but on God who shows mercy."
You can stop the exhausting race of trying to will or work your way into my favour - it was never a competition to win. Rest in the fact that mercy comes from me, freely, not from how hard you're trying.
"For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. "
"Because Scripture says to Pharaoh: "I raised you up for this very purpose - to display my power through you, and to make my name known across the whole earth.""
Even opposition and resistance to what's good doesn't derail my purposes - I can work through the worst circumstances to bring about something that displays real hope for everyone watching. Don't assume setbacks mean I've lost control.
"Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. "
"So then, God shows mercy to whoever he chooses, and he hardens whoever he chooses."
How you respond to what's good and true genuinely matters - don't treat this as an excuse to say "it's out of my hands". I'm patient, but I also take seriously the pattern of choices you keep making.
"Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? "
"You'll say to me then, "So why does God still blame us? Who can resist what he's decided?""
Bring me your genuine confusion about fairness and responsibility - I'd rather you wrestle honestly with hard questions than pretend you have no doubts. Real faith can hold tension without needing every answer immediately.
"Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? "
"But wait - who are you, a mere human, to talk back to God? Does the thing that was made get to say to the one who made it, "Why did you make me like this?""
There's real freedom in accepting that you don't have to have every answer figured out to trust me. Some humility in the face of what you can't fully see isn't weakness - it's wisdom.
"Hath not the poster power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? "
"Doesn't a potter have the right, from the very same lump of clay, to shape one pot for a special purpose and another for an everyday one?"
You are shaped by a maker who knows exactly what he's doing, even if the shape your life is taking doesn't make sense to you yet. Trust the hands doing the shaping, even mid-process.
"What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: "
"What if God, wanting to display his justice and make his power known, patiently put up with great forbearance those who were headed towards destruction through their own choices?"
Even people who seem far from good, or headed for ruin by their own choices, are met by my patience, not my impatience to condemn. I extend far more restraint towards everyone than they usually realise.
"And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, "
"And so that he could make known the richness of his glory to those he'd shown mercy to - people he'd prepared in advance for glory,"
If you've experienced my mercy, it's not an accident or an afterthought - I've been preparing something good for you all along, on purpose. Let that steady your confidence rather than your fear.
"Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? "
"And that includes us - people he's called, not only from among the Jews, but from non-Jewish nations too."
Where you come from - your nationality, background, or family history - was never a barrier to being fully included and loved by me. My call reaches everyone, without exception based on ancestry.
"As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved. "
"As God also says in Hosea: "I will call those who were not my people, 'my people', and the one who wasn't loved, 'beloved'.""
If you've ever felt like an outsider, unwanted or unlovable, that's exactly the kind of person I specialise in calling "mine" and "beloved". Being far off doesn't disqualify you - it's often exactly where I come looking.
"And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God. "
"And it will happen that in the very place where they were told, "You are not my people", they will be called children of the living God."
Wherever you've felt most rejected or written off, that place doesn't have the final word over who you are to me. I can turn the very site of your lowest moment into where you discover you belong.
"Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved: "
"Isaiah also cries out concerning Israel: "Even if the people of Israel are as numerous as grains of sand on the seashore, only a remnant will be saved.""
Belonging to a big group or tradition doesn't automatically guarantee you're walking in what actually matters - real faith is personal, not just inherited by numbers. Make sure your own trust in me is genuine, not just borrowed from the crowd.
"For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth. "
"Because the Lord will carry out his work completely and decisively - he will act swiftly and justly on the earth."
Even when things unfold differently than you expected, my plan isn't falling apart - it's being carried out with precision and justice, right on schedule. Trust the process even when the shape of it surprises you.
"And as Esaias said before, Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we had been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha. "
"And as Isaiah said earlier: "If the Lord of hosts hadn't left us some survivors, we would have ended up like Sodom, made just like Gomorrah.""
Even a small remnant of good, faithfully preserved, can be the difference between total ruin and real hope. Never underestimate the value of the few who stay faithful when everything around them seems to be collapsing.
"What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith. "
"So what should we conclude then? That non-Jews, who weren't even chasing after righteousness, ended up finding it - the righteousness that comes through faith."
You don't need a head start or years of religious effort to find real standing with me - sometimes the people who weren't even looking stumble into exactly what they needed, simply by trusting. Don't assume you have to have it all figured out first.
"But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness. "
"But Israel, who pursued a law that could produce righteousness, didn't actually reach that righteousness."
Sincere effort matters, but it has to be aimed the right way - working hard at the wrong approach still won't get you where you're trying to go. Make sure what you're pursuing is trust in me, not just performance for me.
"Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone; "
"Why not? Because they pursued it not through faith, but as if through law-keeping and effort. They stumbled over the very stone meant to be a stumbling block."
Sometimes the very thing meant to save you can become an obstacle if you're too committed to doing things your own way. Be willing to let go of your preferred method and simply trust, rather than insisting on earning it.
"As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. "
"As Scripture says: "Look, I am placing in Zion a stone that will cause people to stumble, a rock that will offend - but whoever trusts in him will never be put to shame.""
However complicated the questions you're wrestling with, the actual invitation stays simple: trust me, and you will never be left ashamed or let down. Don't let the hard theology obscure the straightforward door that's always open to you.
