Romans Chapter 3
Showing all 31 verses for Romans Chapter 3.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision? "
"Paul raises an objection: so what's the point of being Jewish, or of circumcision, if everyone - Jew and non-Jew alike - stands in the same position before God?"
I ask you not to throw away the good things handed down to you just because they can't buy your way to me - heritage and tradition still matter, just not as a scorecard.
"Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God. "
"Paul answers: yes, there's real benefit - above all, the Jewish people were entrusted with God's own words."
Being trusted with something valuable - knowledge, truth, a message worth passing on - is a privilege, and I want you to treat it as a responsibility to steward well, not a trophy to boast about.
"For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect? "
"Paul asks: does it matter that some of them didn't trust God? Does their unfaithfulness cancel out God's own faithfulness?"
Even when people let me down or walk away from what I've offered, that doesn't change who I am or what I've promised - I remain reliable regardless of how others respond.
"God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged. "
"Absolutely not, Paul says - let God be found true even if it means every single person turns out to be a liar. As scripture puts it, God is proved right in what he says and wins whenever he's put on trial."
I'd rather you were brutally honest about where you've fallen short than defensive - David modelled that honesty, and it's the doorway to real change, not a badge of shame.
"But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man) "
"But, Paul continues, if our wrongdoing actually makes God's rightness look better by comparison, what does that mean? Is God being unfair when he punishes us? (Paul flags this is a very human way of arguing.)"
I see straight through arguments that try to justify wrongdoing by claiming it somehow serves a greater good - don't let clever reasoning talk you out of taking responsibility for your own choices.
"God forbid: for then how shall God judge the world? "
"Certainly not, Paul says - because if that logic held, how could God judge the world at all?"
I hold everyone to genuine accountability, and that's actually good news - it means the world isn't random, and real fairness exists even when it's hard to see day to day.
"For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner? "
"Paul continues the objector's voice: if my dishonesty makes God's truth stand out even more, bringing him glory, why am I still being condemned as a sinner?"
I'm not fooled by excuses that turn your own harmful behaviour into some kind of favour done for a greater cause - own your actions honestly instead of dressing them up.
"And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just. "
"And why not go further and say, 'let's do evil so good can come of it'? Paul says some people falsely accuse him of teaching exactly that - and anyone who actually believes and acts on it deserves the judgement they get."
Never mistake my mercy for permission to cause harm - real love and forgiveness always call you towards better choices, never away from responsibility.
"What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; "
"So where does this leave us? Are Jews better off than everyone else? Not at all, Paul says - he's already shown that both Jews and non-Jews alike are all under the power of sin."
I don't rank people by their background, religion, or reputation - everyone starts in the same place needing the same grace, so drop any sense of moral superiority over someone different from you.
"As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: "
"As the scriptures say: not a single person is truly good."
I don't need you to pretend to be flawless before I'll accept you - the starting point for everyone is honesty about not having it all together, and that's exactly where real change can begin.
"There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. "
"No one truly understands, and no one genuinely searches for God on their own."
I come looking for you long before you ever think to look for me - so don't wait until you feel spiritually ready or worthy; that search starts with me reaching towards you, not the other way round.
"They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. "
"Everyone has wandered off the right path; together they've become useless for good; not a single one of them does what's truly good."
I don't measure you against other people to see who's 'less bad' - everyone has wandered, so instead of comparing yourself to others, focus on the way back, which I've already marked out for you.
"Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: "
"Their throats are like open graves; their tongues are full of lies; poisonous venom sits behind their lips."
Watch your words as carefully as your actions - what comes out of your mouth can wound as deeply as any blow, so choose speech that heals rather than poisons.
"Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: "
"Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness."
Bitterness left to fester always comes out somewhere - in your words, your tone, your relationships - so bring it to me and let it go rather than letting it curdle into cursing others.
"Their feet are swift to shed blood: "
"Their feet move quickly towards violence."
Notice how quickly anger can turn into action - I ask you to slow that instinct right down, to choose peace deliberately in the moment you feel the pull towards retaliation.
"Destruction and misery are in their ways: "
"Ruin and suffering mark the paths they walk."
Harmful choices don't just hurt other people, they leave wreckage in your own life too - I want better for you than a path that ends in ruin and misery for everyone involved.
"And the way of peace have they not known: "
"They simply don't know the path that leads to peace."
I am the way of peace, and I want to show it to you directly - real peace isn't something you stumble into by accident, it's a path I walk with you, step by step.
"There is no fear of God before their eyes. "
"They have no reverence or respect for God at all."
A little humility before something bigger than yourself keeps you grounded - not out of dread, but out of respect, and it's the foundation everything else, including how you treat other people, gets built on.
"Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. "
"Paul explains: whatever the law says applies to those who live under it, so that no one has an excuse left to make, and the whole world stands accountable before God."
I'm not interested in hearing excuses or comparisons about who's worse than whom - once everyone stops defending themselves, that's exactly when real honesty, and real help, can begin.
"Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin. "
"So no one can be made right with God simply by keeping the law's requirements - because what the law actually does is show us where we fall short."
I don't grade you on a checklist of rules kept perfectly - rules are useful for showing you where you're struggling, but they were never meant to save you, so don't put your whole identity on passing a test you can't pass.
"But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; "
"But now, Paul announces, a way of being right with God has been revealed that doesn't depend on law-keeping at all - though the law and the prophets themselves pointed forward to it."
This is the good news I bring - you don't have to earn your way into being valued, loved, or accepted; that door has already been opened for you, and it was planned long before you were even born.
"Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: "
"This right standing with God comes through trusting in Jesus Christ, and it's available to everyone who believes - there's no distinction between people."
My acceptance of you doesn't depend on your résumé, your heritage, or your track record - it depends on whether you're willing to trust me, and that offer stands open to absolutely everyone, no exceptions.
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; "
"Because everyone has done wrong and fallen short of what God intended for them."
You don't have to pretend you've never messed up to come to me - everyone has fallen short of who they could be, and admitting that honestly is not weakness, it's the doorway into real freedom.
"Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: "
"Yet they are made right with God as a free gift, by his grace, through the freedom that Christ Jesus provides."
Freedom isn't something you have to buy from me with good behaviour - I've already paid the price myself, so all that's left for you to do is accept it and walk out of whatever has been holding you captive.
"Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; "
"God publicly presented Jesus as the means of putting things right between us and him, received through trust, made possible by his sacrificial death - showing God is genuinely just, because he had patiently held back full judgement on sins committed in the past."
I have never simply ignored the wrong in the world or in you - I've dealt with it fully and personally, at real cost to myself, so that patience and justice could both be honoured at once.
"To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. "
"God did this now to demonstrate his own righteousness - so that he could be both fully just himself and the one who makes right anyone who trusts in Jesus."
I don't have to choose between being fair and being merciful towards you - both are fully satisfied, which means you can trust that being forgiven was never at the cost of truth or justice being ignored.
"Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. "
"So what room is left for bragging? None - it's completely ruled out. On what basis? Not by achievement, but by trust."
I don't want you competing with other people over who's more spiritual, more moral, or more deserving - that scoreboard doesn't exist here, so put it down and just be grateful together.
"Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. "
"So Paul concludes: a person is made right with God through trust, not through performing the law's requirements."
You are not on trial for your performance - I ask for your trust, not your perfection, and that trust is enough to bring you into a right relationship with me.
"Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also: "
"Is God only the God of the Jewish people? Isn't he the God of everyone else too? Yes, Paul says, of the Gentiles as well."
I don't belong to one culture, nation, or tribe more than another - my care and welcome reach every single person on this planet equally, regardless of where they were born.
"Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith. "
"Since there's only one God, he makes right both the circumcised (Jews) and the uncircumcised (Gentiles) through the very same means: faith."
I treat every person by the same standard of grace - no one gets a shortcut and no one is locked out; the path is identical for everyone who comes to me.
"Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law. "
"Does this mean faith cancels out the law altogether? Absolutely not, Paul says - in fact, it upholds what the law was always really about."
Trusting me isn't a rejection of everything good that came before - it's the fulfilment of it; I build on what's true rather than tearing it down.
