Numbers Chapter 18

The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"And the LORD said unto Aaron, Thou and thy sons and thy fatherβs house with thee shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary: and thou and thy sons with thee shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood. "
"The LORD said to Aaron: You, your sons, and your father's whole family will be held responsible for any faults connected with the sanctuary; and you and your sons specifically will be held responsible for anything that goes wrong in your work as priests."
Aaron and his family carried real responsibility and real risk for the sake of the whole community's worship - leadership in my house always comes with weighty accountability, not just honour. If I've given you spiritual responsibility for others, hold it with humility and care, not entitlement.
"And thy brethren also of the tribe of Levi, the tribe of thy father, bring thou with thee, that they may be joined unto thee, and minister unto thee: but thou and thy sons with thee shall minister before the tabernacle of witness. "
"Also bring your relatives from the tribe of Levi to join you and help you; but only you and your sons will actually serve in front of the Tent of the Testimony, handling the innermost duties."
I gave the Levites a real and valued role alongside Aaron, even though it differed from the priesthood itself - every calling in my service matters, even when the tasks differ. Don't measure your worth to me by comparing your role to someone else's.
"And they shall keep thy charge, and the charge of all the tabernacle: only they shall not come nigh the vessels of the sanctuary and the altar, that neither they, nor ye also, die. "
"The Levites are to carry out their duties and look after the whole tent, but they must not go near the sacred objects or the altar - if they do, both they and the priests will die."
I set clear boundaries here not to exclude the Levites out of spite, but to protect them - some responsibilities carry real weight that not everyone is prepared to carry. Respecting the limits I've placed on you is an act of trust, not a mark of lesser worth.
"And they shall be joined unto thee, and keep the charge of the tabernacle of the congregation, for all the service of the tabernacle: and a stranger shall not come nigh unto you. "
"They will be joined to you and take care of everything needed to run the Tent of Meeting, and no unauthorised outsider is to come near."
I define carefully who serves where, protecting the sacredness of what happens in worship - not everyone gets to redefine the terms of approaching me on their own authority. Trust that my order, even when it limits you, comes from wisdom and care.
"And ye shall keep the charge of the sanctuary, and the charge of the altar: that there be no wrath any more upon the children of Israel. "
"You are to take care of the sanctuary and the altar so that my anger doesn't fall on the people of Israel again."
Faithful, careful service in the ordinary tasks I've given you actually protects a whole community from harm - diligence in small things matters more than it looks like it does. Don't underestimate the importance of quietly doing your assigned work well.
"And I, behold, I have taken your brethren the Levites from among the children of Israel: to you they are given as a gift for the LORD, to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation. "
"Look, I have taken your relatives the Levites from among all the Israelites; they are given to you as a gift, dedicated to serving the Tent of Meeting."
I call the Levites a gift, not just workers doing a job, but people I delight to give in service of worship. See your own service to me the same way: not drudgery, but something I treasure as a gift given back to me.
"Therefore thou and thy sons with thee shall keep your priestβs office for everything of the altar, and within the vail; and ye shall serve: I have given your priestβs office unto you as a service of gift: and the stranger that cometh nigh shall be put to death. "
"You and your sons are to carry out priestly duties for everything connected with the altar and everything behind the inner curtain. I am giving you the priesthood as a gift to carry out; anyone unauthorised who comes near will be put to death."
I describe the priesthood as a service of gift - even a role with heavy responsibility is, at its heart, something I give out of grace, not something earned by merit. Whatever you're called to serve in, remember it began as my gift to you, not your achievement.
"And the LORD spake unto Aaron, Behold, I also have given thee the charge of mine heave offerings of all the hallowed things of the children of Israel; unto thee have I given them by reason of the anointing, and to thy sons, by an ordinance for ever. "
"The LORD said to Aaron: I have also put you in charge of the contributions people bring me - all the holy gifts of the Israelites. I've given these to you and your sons permanently, because of your anointing."
I made sure those who served me full-time were genuinely provided for from the offerings of the people - ministry was never meant to leave its servants in want. Support generously those who give their lives to serving me and others.
"This shall be thine of the most holy things, reserved from the fire: every oblation of theirs, every meat offering of theirs, and every sin offering of theirs, and every trespass offering of theirs which they shall render unto me, shall be most holy for thee and for thy sons. "
"This is what belongs to you from the most sacred offerings not burned up completely: every grain offering, sin offering, and guilt offering people bring me - these are most holy, set aside for you and your sons."
I set aside the most holy offerings specifically for Aaron's household, making sure that dedicated service came with real, dependable provision. When I call you to serve, I also commit to caring for your needs along the way.
"In the most holy place shalt thou eat it; every male shall eat it: it shall be holy unto thee. "
"You are to eat it in a most holy place; every male in your family may eat it - it is holy, set apart for you."
Even the details of where and how the priests ate reflected the holiness of what they'd been given - nothing about serving me was treated as ordinary or careless. Handle even the smallest parts of what I've entrusted to you with due reverence.
"And this is thine; the heave offering of their gift, with all the wave offerings of the children of Israel: I have given them unto thee, and to thy sons and to thy daughters with thee, by a statute for ever: every one that is clean in thy house shall eat of it. "
"This too is yours: the contributions people bring, along with all the wave offerings of the Israelites. I have given these to you, your sons, and your daughters, permanently. Anyone in your household who is ritually clean may eat it."
Notice that daughters, not just sons, share in this provision - I include the whole family in the blessing of faithful service, not a narrow few. My provision for those who serve me is generous and reaches further than people often expect.
"All the best of the oil, and all the best of the wine, and of the wheat, the firstiruits of them which they shall offer unto the LORD, them have I given thee. "
"All the best of the olive oil, the wine, and the grain - the first and finest of the harvest that people bring to the LORD - I have given to you."
The people were asked to give their best, first portion of oil, wine and wheat, not their leftovers, as an act of trust that I would still provide enough for them. Giving me your first and best, rather than what's left over, is itself an act of faith.
"And whatsoever is first ripe in the land, which they shall bring unto the LORD, shall be thine; every one that is clean in thine house shall eat of it. "
"Whatever ripens first in the land that people bring to the LORD will be yours; anyone in your household who is ritually clean may eat it."
What was first ripe in the land was to be brought to me before anything else was kept back - a picture of putting me first in the ordinary rhythms of daily provision. Let me have the first place in your everyday plans, not just your special occasions.
"Every thing devoted in Israel shall be thine. "
"Everything specially dedicated to God in Israel belongs to you."
What was truly given over to me was given completely, not partially withheld or reclaimed. When you dedicate something to my purposes, let it be a whole-hearted gift, not a half-measure.
"Every thing that openeth the matrix in all flesh, which they bring unto the LORD, whether it be of men or beasts, shall be thine: nevertheless the firstborn of man shalt thou surely redeem, and the firstling of unclean beasts shalt thou redeem. "
"Every firstborn - whether human or animal - that is presented to the LORD belongs to you. However, you must let people buy back their firstborn sons, and buy back the firstborn of any unclean animal rather than keeping it."
Even the firstborn, precious and set apart, needed redeeming - a picture that everything, even what seems most valuable, still needs my provision for redemption. This points towards how I would one day provide redemption for everyone, not just the ceremonially clean.
"And those that are to be redeemed from a month old shalt thou redeem, according to thine estimation, for the money of five shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, which is twenty gerahs. "
"When redeeming a firstborn son from one month old, the price is five shekels of silver, valued by the sanctuary standard, where twenty gerahs make a shekel."
I set a specific, fair price for redemption so no one could be exploited or left uncertain about what was owed - my instructions are practical and clear, not vague or burdensome. When I ask something of you, I make the way plain, not confusing.
"But the firstling of a cow, or the firstling of a sheep, or the firstling of a goat, thou shalt not redeem; they are holy: thou shalt sprinkle their blood upon the altar, and shalt burn their fat for an offering made by fire, for a sweet savour unto the LORD. "
"But you must not let anyone buy back the firstborn of cattle, sheep, or goats - these are holy. Sprinkle their blood on the altar and burn their fat as an offering made by fire, a pleasing aroma to the LORD."
Some things were not redeemed but wholly offered - a reminder that certain devotion isn't a transaction to negotiate, it's simply given over completely. Some gifts to me are meant to be given outright, not bargained down.
"And the flesh of them shall be thine, as the wave breast and as the right shoulder are thine. "
"The meat from these animals will be yours, just like the breast and right thigh that are set aside for you from other offerings."
The details here show my care in making sure provision was fair and specific, not vague or left to chance - I don't leave the needs of those who serve me to guesswork. Trust that when I provide, I provide with real thought and specificity for your actual needs.
"All the heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer unto the LORD, have I given thee, and thy sons and thy daughters with thee, by a statute for ever: it is a covenant of salt for ever before the LORD unto thee and to thy seed with thee. "
"All the sacred contributions that the Israelites bring to the LORD I have given to you, your sons, and your daughters - a permanent arrangement, a covenant of salt that lasts forever between the LORD and you and your descendants."
I call this a covenant of salt, lasting, incorruptible, not easily broken, showing how seriously I keep my promises of provision to those who serve me. You can trust my commitments to you; they don't spoil or expire.
"And the LORD spake unto Aaron, Thou shalt have no inheritance in their land, neither shalt thou have any part among them: I am thy part and thine inheritance among the children of Israel. "
"The LORD said to Aaron: You will not receive any share of land like the other Israelites; instead, I myself am your share and your inheritance among the people."
I told Aaron directly that I myself would be his inheritance, richer than any plot of land - true security isn't found in possessions but in belonging to me. If you feel you have less than others materially, remember that knowing me is itself the greater treasure.
"And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation. "
"I have given the tribe of Levi all the tithes - a tenth of everyone's produce - in Israel as their inheritance, in return for the work they do serving the Tent of Meeting."
I established a fair, ongoing system so those who served full-time in worship wouldn't be left destitute - I care about practical, sustainable provision, not just spiritual ideals. Support the practical needs of those who serve me and your community.
"Neither must the children of Israel henceforth come nigh the tabernacle of the congregation, lest they bear sin, and die. "
"From now on, ordinary Israelites are not to come near the Tent of Meeting, or they will be held responsible and could die."
This boundary protected ordinary people from a danger they weren't prepared to handle - my rules of access were about safety and order, not arbitrary exclusion. Respect the wisdom behind boundaries, even ones you don't fully understand yet.
"But the Levites shall do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they shall bear their iniquity: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations, that among the children of Israel they have no inheritance. "
"Instead, the Levites will do the work of the Tent of Meeting, and they will bear the responsibility for it. This is a permanent rule: among the Israelites, they will have no land inheritance."
The Levites accepted a costly trade, full devotion to service in exchange for giving up ordinary land and possessions, and I honoured that sacrifice with my own provision instead. Whatever you give up to serve me faithfully, I notice and provide for in my own way.
"But the tithes of the children of Israel, which they offer as an heave offering unto the LORD, I have given to the Levites to inherit: therefore I have said unto them, Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance. "
"The tithes that the Israelites present as a contribution to the LORD I have given to the Levites as their inheritance. That's why I told them they will have no land inheritance."
I made sure the community's generosity became the Levites' actual livelihood - worship and practical provision were woven together, not separated. Real faith always has a practical, generous shape to it.
"And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, "
"The LORD spoke to Moses and said:"
I gave Moses further instruction for the Levites specifically, showing that even those who receive from others still needed guidance on how to give rightly themselves. No one is ever simply a receiver in my economy; everyone has something to give onward.
"Thus speak unto the Levites, and say unto them, When ye take of the children of Israel the tithes which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall offer up an heave offering of it for the LORD, even a tenth part of the tithe. "
"Tell the Levites: When you receive the tithe I have given you as your inheritance, you are to set aside a tenth of that tithe as a contribution to the LORD."
Even the Levites, who received tithes from others, were still asked to give back a portion themselves - no one is exempt from the posture of grateful giving, however much or little they hold. Generosity isn't just for those with the most; it's for everyone who has received.
"And this your heave offering shall be reckoned unto you, as though it were the corn of the threshingfloor, and as the fulness of the winepress. "
"This contribution of yours will be counted the same as if it were grain from the threshing floor or wine from the winepress."
I count the Levites' offering as fully valuable as anyone else's harvest, even though it came from what they'd already received rather than fields they worked themselves. What you give from what I've given you is just as precious to me as what anyone else brings.
"Thus ye also shall offer an heave offering unto the LORD of all your tithes, which ye receive of the children of Israel; and ye shall give thereof the LORDβs heave offering to Aaron the priest. "
"In this way you also are to present a contribution to the LORD from all the tithes you receive from the Israelites, and give this portion - the LORD's contribution - to Aaron the priest."
I built in a chain of generosity here, the people gave to the Levites, and the Levites in turn gave onward, showing how blessing is meant to flow through a community, not stop with the first receiver. Whatever you receive, look for how it can keep moving to bless someone else.
"Out of all your gifts ye shall offer every heave offering of the LORD, of all the best thereof, even the hallowed part thereof out of it. "
"From everything given to you, you are to present every contribution due to the LORD, and it must be the best part - the finest portion."
Again I ask for the best, not the leftover - the standard for giving to me was never about minimum requirement but about honouring what and who deserves the first portion. Bring me your best effort and best gifts, not merely what's convenient to spare.
"Therefore thou shalt say unto them, When ye have heaved the best thereof from it, then it shall be counted unto the Levites as the increase of the threshingfloor, and as the increase of the winepress. "
"So tell them: once you have set aside the best part of it, what remains will be counted as your own income, the same as grain from a threshing floor or wine from a winepress."
Once the Levites had given their portion faithfully, I released them to enjoy the rest freely and gratefully, wherever they were - obedience in giving isn't meant to leave you anxious, but free to receive what remains with a clear conscience. Give faithfully, then enjoy what's left with a thankful heart, not guilt.
"And ye shall eat it in every place, ye and your households: for it is your reward for your service in the tabernacle of the congregation. "
"You and your households may eat the rest of it anywhere; it is your payment for the work you do at the Tent of Meeting."
I told the Levites plainly that this provision was their reward for real service given, not charity or an afterthought - I honour honest labour with honest reward. Trust that faithful service to me is never overlooked or left unrewarded.
"And ye shall bear no sin by reason of it, when ye have heaved from it the best of it: neither shall ye pollute the holy things of the children of Israel, lest ye die. "
"You will not be held guilty because of this, as long as you have set aside the best part of it. Just don't treat the holy things of the Israelites carelessly, or you will die."
Faithful, honest giving of the best portion kept the Levites free from guilt - integrity in how you handle what's entrusted to you protects your own conscience as well as honours me. Handle what I've given you to steward with honesty, and you'll walk free of needless guilt.
