John Chapter 8
Showing all 59 verses for John Chapter 8.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"Jesus went unto the mount of Olives. "
"Jesus went out to the Mount of Olives (a hillside near Jerusalem where he often spent the night)."
I withdrew to a quiet place before returning to face the crowd - stepping back isn't avoidance, it's how I stayed steady enough to meet what came next with a clear head.
"And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. "
"Early the next morning he went back to the temple, and when the crowds gathered around him, he sat down and began teaching them."
I made myself available every day, in the same place, to anyone who wanted to listen - real teaching means showing up consistently, not just when it's dramatic.
"And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, "
"The religious scholars and Pharisees brought in a woman who had been caught committing adultery and made her stand in front of everyone."
I refused to let anyone be reduced to a headline or an example - a person's worst moment is never the whole truth about them, and I won't let you be defined by yours either.
"They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. "
"They said to him, 'Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.'"
I noticed when someone's polished words didn't match their real motive - listen for that gap, because sincerity and technique aren't the same thing.
"Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? "
"'Moses commanded in the Law that a woman like this should be stoned to death. So what do you say?'"
I didn't rush to answer a trick question just because everyone was staring - sometimes the wisest response to a rigged choice is to slow down rather than pick one of the two options you're being pushed towards.
"This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. "
"They said this to test him, hoping to find a reason to accuse him. But Jesus bent down and started writing on the ground with his finger, as if he hadn't heard them."
I gave myself space before responding to pressure instead of letting other people's urgency dictate my timing - you're allowed to pause, even under a demand for an instant answer.
"So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. "
"When they kept pressing him for an answer, he stood up straight and said, 'Let the one among you who has never sinned throw the first stone at her.'"
I turned the accusation back onto the accusers, not to excuse wrongdoing but to strip away the pretence of moral perfection. Before you throw a verdict at someone else's life, be honest about your own.
"And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. "
"Then he bent down again and continued writing on the ground."
I said what needed saying and then let it settle, rather than labouring the point - sometimes the most powerful thing you can do after speaking truth is stop talking.
"And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. "
"When they heard this, one by one they walked away, starting with the oldest, until Jesus was left alone with the woman still standing there."
I let people reach their own conclusion about themselves rather than shaming them into it - real change happens when a person's own conscience does the work.
"When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? "
"When Jesus stood up and saw no one left but the woman, he asked her, 'Where did they go? Has no one condemned you?'"
I spoke to her as a person, not as a case to be closed - dignity costs nothing to give, and it's often the first thing people need after being humiliated.
"She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more. "
"She said, 'No one, sir.' And Jesus said, 'Then I don't condemn you either. Go, and don't sin like this again.'"
I offered forgiveness and a fresh direction in the same breath - I'm not interested in condemning you for your past; I'm interested in where you go from here.
"Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. "
"Jesus spoke to them again, saying, 'I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light that leads to life.'"
I offer clarity, not just comfort - if you're tired of stumbling through decisions in the dark, follow what I've shown you, and things will start to make sense.
"The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true. "
"The Pharisees objected, 'You're just testifying about yourself - that doesn't count as valid proof.'"
I let people challenge my claims openly rather than demanding they simply accept them - if what I say is true, it should withstand honest scrutiny.
"Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go. "
"Jesus answered, 'Even though I am testifying about myself, what I say is true, because I know where I came from and where I'm going - but you have no idea.'"
I speak from a settled sense of who I am and where I'm headed - you'll trust your own words more, too, once you know your own story instead of just reacting to how others define you.
"Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man. "
"'You judge by outward appearances; I don't judge anyone in that way.'"
I refuse to size people up by their surface - their status, their mistakes, their reputation - because that's never the whole truth about anyone.
"And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me. "
"'And even if I do judge, my judgement is accurate, because I'm not alone in it - I have the Father who sent me alongside me.'"
I never acted purely on my own; my decisions were grounded in a relationship bigger than myself - find people and truths outside your own head to check your judgement against.
"It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true. "
"'Even in your own Law it's written that the testimony of two witnesses is valid.'"
I argued from common ground you already accepted, rather than just demanding you take my word for it - persuasion works better than pure assertion.
"I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me. "
"'I am one witness testifying about myself, and the Father who sent me is the other witness testifying about me.'"
I never stood entirely alone in what I claimed about myself - having someone who truly knows you back up who you are matters, and I offer that kind of backing to anyone who follows me.
"Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also. "
"They asked him, 'Where is your father?' Jesus replied, 'You don't know me or my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father too.'"
I told you that really knowing me is the doorway to understanding what God is like - don't settle for secondhand ideas about the divine when a real, close relationship is on offer.
"These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come. "
"Jesus said all this while teaching in the temple, near the collection boxes, and no one arrested him, because the time for that hadn't yet arrived."
I moved through danger on my own timetable, not the world's - you don't have to feel powerless just because threats are close; there's a difference between danger and being out of control.
"Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come. "
"Jesus said to them again, 'I am going away, and you will look for me, but you will die in your sin - where I'm going, you cannot come.'"
I was honest about the cost of walking away from truth, even when it wasn't comfortable to say - real care sometimes means telling someone plainly where a path leads.
"Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come. "
"So the Jewish leaders said, 'Is he going to kill himself? Is that why he says we can't come where he's going?'"
I kept speaking plainly even when people misheard me on a shallow level - don't be discouraged if your deepest meaning isn't caught right away; truth is worth restating.
"And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. "
"He told them, 'You are from below; I am from above. You belong to this world; I do not belong to this world.'"
I lived by a different set of values than the ones this world runs on - if my words feel foreign to you at first, that's often a sign they're offering something genuinely different, not that they're wrong.
"I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins. "
"'That's why I told you that you will die in your sins - because unless you believe that I am who I say I am, you will die in your sins.'"
I asked for trust in who I actually am, not just agreement with good advice - real change starts with recognising who's speaking to you, not just following isolated tips.
"Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning. "
"So they asked him, 'Who are you, then?' Jesus replied, 'Exactly what I have been telling you from the start.'"
I didn't change my story to satisfy every new demand for proof - who I am has been consistent all along; look at the whole pattern, not just the moment you happen to be paying attention.
"I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him. "
"'I have much more I could say about you, and much to judge - but the one who sent me is true, and I only tell the world what I have heard from him.'"
I held back plenty I could have said and focused only on what was true and necessary - restraint isn't weakness; sometimes the most loving thing is choosing your words carefully.
"They understood not that he spake to them of the Father. "
"They did not realise he was talking to them about the Father."
I kept pointing beyond myself to the Father even when people missed it entirely - I'd rather be misunderstood while telling the truth than understood while telling a lie.
"Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. "
"Jesus told them, 'When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am who I claim to be, and that I do nothing on my own, but say only what the Father has taught me.'"
I let the worst moment of my life become the clearest proof of who I am - even suffering you don't choose can end up revealing something true, if you stay faithful through it.
"And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him. "
"'And the one who sent me is with me - he has not left me on my own, because I always do what pleases him.'"
I was never truly alone, because my life was aimed at pleasing the one who sent me, not the crowd around me - find that same anchor, and isolation loses its grip.
"As he spake these words, many believed on him. "
"As Jesus was saying these things, many people believed in him."
I kept speaking the same truth to a mixed crowd, knowing it would land differently in different people - don't expect everyone to respond the same way; focus on being honest, not on managing everyone's reaction.
"Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; "
"Jesus said to the Jews who now believed in him, 'If you hold on to what I've taught and keep living by it, you are truly my disciples.'"
I measured commitment by whether people kept living out what I taught, not by an initial burst of enthusiasm - build your life around what you've learned to be true, day after day.
"And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. "
"'And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'"
I offer freedom that comes from facing what's true, not from avoiding it - the discomfort of honesty is nearly always worth it, because pretending never actually sets anyone free.
"They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? "
"They answered, 'We are descendants of Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone - what do you mean, you will be set free?'"
I wasn't talking about your circumstances or heritage, but about what's actually holding your inner life captive - don't let pride in where you come from stop you seeing what still has a grip on you.
"Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. "
"Jesus answered, 'I tell you the truth: everyone who sins is a slave to sin.'"
I named the real chains - habits and patterns that quietly control you even when you think you're in charge - because you can't be freed from something you refuse to admit has a hold on you.
"And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. "
"'And a slave has no permanent place in the household, but a son belongs there forever.'"
I offered you a permanent place, not a temporary one earned through good behaviour - belonging that lasts isn't about proving yourself constantly; it's about the relationship you're brought into.
"If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. "
"'So if the Son sets you free, you will be truly free.'"
I offer a freedom strong enough to be real, not just freedom in name - and I mean for it to reach the parts of you that have felt stuck the longest.
"I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you. "
"'I know you are Abraham's descendants; but you are trying to kill me, because my message has no place in you.'"
I pointed out the gap between what you claimed to be and how you were actually acting - your background doesn't excuse your behaviour; what matters is whether truth has room to change you.
"I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father. "
"'I speak about what I have seen in my Father's presence, and you do what you have seen from your father.'"
I lived out what I'd actually seen and known of God, not just what I'd been raised to say - be honest about which influences are really shaping your choices, not just which ones you claim.
"They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham. "
"They replied, 'Abraham is our father.' Jesus said, 'If you were really Abraham's children, you would act like Abraham did.'"
I measured belonging by likeness of character, not by claimed ancestry - live out the values you say you hold, or the label means nothing.
"But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham. "
"'But instead, you are trying to kill me - a man who has told you the truth I heard from God. Abraham never did anything like that.'"
I was honest with you, and that honesty is what you couldn't tolerate - truth-telling sometimes provokes hostility precisely because it's accurate, not because it's wrong.
"Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God. "
"'You are doing the works of your real father.' They replied, 'We are not illegitimate children - we have one Father, and that is God.'"
I let a challenge to my own reputation pass without defending myself, because the real issue at stake was theirs, not mine - don't get distracted defending your image when a more important truth is on the table.
"Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. "
"Jesus told them, 'If God really were your Father, you would love me, because I have come from God - I didn't come on my own, but he sent me.'"
I used love, not correct words about God, as the real test of genuine connection to him - check your own life the same way: does what you believe actually produce love, or just the language of it?
"Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. "
"'Why can't you understand what I'm saying? It's because you're not able to bear hearing my message.'"
I spoke clearly, so when my words don't land, look honestly at whether the block is really confusion or resistance - truth often gets called 'confusing' by people who simply don't want to act on it.
"Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. "
"'You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and has never stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he's speaking his own native language, because he is a liar and the source of all lying.'"
I named evil plainly when I saw it, even dressed up in religious language - real love sometimes requires calling out a destructive pattern honestly, not softening it to keep everyone comfortable.
"And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not. "
"'And because I am telling you the truth, you don't believe me.'"
I didn't soften what was true just to be believed more easily - some truths cost you credibility with people who'd rather not face them, and that's a price worth paying.
"Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? "
"'Which of you can prove that I am guilty of any sin? And if I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me?'"
I let my actual conduct, not just my claims, stand as the evidence - if you want to know whether to trust someone's words, look honestly at how they actually live.
"He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God. "
"'The person who belongs to God listens to what God says. The reason you don't listen is that you don't belong to God.'"
I judged spiritual belonging by whether people were open to hearing hard truths, not by their claimed status - stay teachable, because a closed mind is often the clearest sign something else has taken God's place.
"Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil? "
"The Jewish leaders responded, 'Aren't we right to say you're a Samaritan and have a demon?'"
I didn't retaliate when the argument turned into personal insult - staying focused on truth rather than trading insults is harder, and more worth doing, when you're the one being attacked.
"Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me. "
"Jesus replied, 'I do not have a demon. I am honouring my Father, and you are dishonouring me.'"
I answered an insult with a calm, honest correction instead of matching its heat - you can hold your ground firmly without needing to fight fire with fire.
"And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth. "
"'I am not seeking glory for myself - but there is one who seeks it for me, and he is the judge.'"
I let go of defending my own reputation and trusted a bigger judgement than the crowd in front of me - you don't have to win every argument about your own worth; some things are safe to leave in better hands.
"Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death. "
"'I tell you the truth: if anyone holds on to what I have said, they will never see death.'"
I promised that holding on to what I've taught leads to a life death can't erase - build your life on something that actually lasts, not on what only serves you for a few decades.
"Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death. "
"The Jewish leaders said, 'Now we're sure you have a demon! Abraham died, and so did the prophets, yet you say whoever keeps your word will never taste death.'"
I kept offering a deeper truth even while being mocked for a shallow misreading of it - don't let ridicule based on a misunderstanding push you to abandon what you know to be true.
"Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself? "
"'Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? And the prophets died too. Who do you think you are?'"
I didn't dodge the direct question of who I really am, even when it was hurled at me with hostility - be willing to answer the hard, personal questions people throw at you honestly, not defensively.
"Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God: "
"Jesus answered, 'If I glorify myself, that glory means nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me - the one you claim is your God.'"
I didn't manufacture my own credibility - real honour has to come from somewhere outside your own self-promotion, or it's worth nothing at all.
"Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying. "
"'But you have not really known him, though I do know him. If I said I didn't know him, I would be a liar just like you - but I do know him, and I keep his word.'"
I refused to pretend I didn't know what I knew, just to avoid an argument - integrity sometimes means standing firm on a truth even when saying it plainly will provoke people.
"Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad. "
"'Your father Abraham was overjoyed at the thought of seeing my day - he saw it, and it filled him with gladness.'"
I was the fulfilment of a hope that stretched back generations before I was even born - you're part of a much longer story than just your own moment, and that can be a source of real hope.
"Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? "
"The Jewish leaders said to him, 'You're not even fifty years old - how could you have seen Abraham?'"
I let the question stand before answering it fully, because the real answer needed to be heard clearly, not rushed - some truths deserve to be built up to, not blurted out.
"Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. "
"Jesus told them, 'I tell you the truth: before Abraham was even born, I am.'"
I claimed an identity that exists outside of ordinary time - and I invite you to build your life on something that doesn't shift with circumstance or fade with the years, something genuinely solid.
"Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. "
"At that, they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and slipped out of the temple, passing right through the crowd unharmed."
I walked through danger that could have ended everything, because the moment for that hadn't arrived yet - trust that your life unfolds within a larger purpose, even when threats feel immediate and overwhelming.
