James Chapter 5
Showing all 20 verses for James Chapter 5.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"Go to now, ye rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. "
"Now listen, you rich people: weep and wail because of the miseries that are coming on you."
What you hoard while others go without will not comfort you in the end - real security was never in the pile, it was in how you used it.
"Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. "
"Your wealth has rotted, and your fine clothes have been eaten by moths."
What you're clutching to feel safe is quietly decaying even as you hold it - put your security somewhere that doesn't rot.
"Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. "
"Your gold and silver have corroded, and that corrosion will testify against you and consume your body like fire. You have stored up wealth in the last days."
Ask what your stockpile is really evidence of - foresight, or fear and greed. The answer shapes what it becomes in the end.
"Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth. "
"Look - the wages you cheated from the workers who harvested your fields are crying out against you, and the cries of those reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts."
How you pay and treat the people who work for you is not just a private business matter - it's a moral one that doesn't escape notice, even when no one else seems to be watching.
"Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. "
"You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence; you have fattened yourselves up, like animals unaware they're about to be slaughtered."
Comfort bought at someone else's expense doesn't stay comfortable forever - wake up to where your ease is actually coming from.
"Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you. "
"You have condemned and killed the innocent, who did not resist you."
Power used against people who can't fight back is the clearest test of character there is - how you treat the defenceless reveals exactly who you are.
"Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. "
"So be patient, friends, until the Lord comes. Think of a farmer waiting for the valuable harvest from the land, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains."
The wrongs done to you and the good you're working towards both take time to come to fruit - don't give up on the process just because the harvest isn't visible yet.
"Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. "
"You too be patient and strengthen your resolve, because the Lord's coming is near."
Patience isn't just gritting your teeth - it's steadying your heart with real hope so you can keep going without becoming bitter along the way.
"Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door. "
"Don't grumble against each other, friends, or you'll be judged - look, the judge is standing right at the door."
When life is hard, don't let your frustration leak out sideways onto the people beside you - save your energy for patience and kindness, not grudges.
"Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. "
"My friends, take the prophets who spoke in the Lord's name as your example of patiently enduring hardship."
You're not the first person to suffer for trying to do what's right - look at those who went before you and kept going, and let their endurance strengthen yours.
"Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy. "
"We consider those who endured to be truly fortunate. You've heard of Job's endurance and seen how the Lord dealt with him in the end - that the Lord is full of compassion and mercy."
Your hardest chapters aren't the whole story - keep going, because what's waiting at the end is more compassion than you think, not less.
"But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. "
"Above all, my friends, do not swear oaths - not by heaven, not by earth, not by anything else. Just let your "yes" mean yes and your "no" mean no, or you'll be liable to judgement."
Be the kind of person whose word doesn't need backing up with promises or oaths - let your honesty be so constant that a simple yes or no is always enough.
"Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. "
"Is anyone among you suffering? Let them pray. Is anyone in good spirits? Let them sing songs of praise."
Bring both your pain and your joy into that conversation - don't save prayer only for emergencies and forget it when things are going well.
"Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: "
"Is anyone among you sick? Let them call for the elders of the community, and have them pray over the person, anointing them with oil in the Lord's name."
You were never meant to face sickness or hardship completely alone - let others come close and carry it with you.
"And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. "
"And the prayer offered in faith will restore the person who is sick, and the Lord will raise them up; if they have sinned, they will be forgiven."
When you pray for someone in genuine faith, you're bringing them both practical hope and a fresh start - don't underestimate what that combination can do.
"Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. "
"Admit your wrongs to each other and pray for one another, so that you can be healed. The heartfelt, persistent prayer of someone living right achieves a great deal."
Hiding your faults keeps you stuck - admitting them to someone you trust, and praying for each other, is where real healing starts. Don't underestimate a sincere prayer, however ordinary you feel.
"Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. "
"Elijah was a human being with the same nature as us, yet he prayed earnestly that it wouldn't rain, and it didn't rain on the land for three and a half years."
You don't need to be extraordinary for your prayers to matter - Elijah was as human as you are, and it was his sincerity, not his status, that moved things.
"And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit. "
"Then he prayed again, and the sky gave rain, and the land produced its crops again."
Don't assume nothing changes when you pray - sometimes the very thing you asked for does come, in its own time.
"Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; "
"My friends, if one of you wanders away from the truth and someone brings them back -"
When someone you know starts drifting from what's good, don't write them off - going after them, gently, is exactly the kind of love asked of us.
"Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins. "
"Know that whoever turns a sinner back from the error of their ways will save that person from death and cover over a great many sins."
Helping just one person find their way back matters more than you know - don't underestimate the difference it makes when you go after someone who's lost their footing.
