Isaiah Chapter 45
Showing all 25 verses for Isaiah Chapter 45.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut; "
"This is what the LORD says to his anointed one, Cyrus, whose right hand I have taken hold of, to bring nations under him and strip kings of their power β to throw open double doors before him so that no gate stays shut."
Don't assume you have to belong to the right group, hold the right beliefs, or look the part to be used for real good in the world. Purpose isn't reserved only for insiders.
"I will go before thee, and make the crooked places straight: I will break in pieces the gates of brass, and cut in sunder the bars of iron: "
"I will go ahead of you and level out the rough, crooked ground; I'll smash the bronze gates and cut through the iron bars."
Some obstacles in your path are being cleared before you even get there, in ways you won't always see or understand. Keep moving forward even when the way looks blocked β it may not stay that way.
"And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the LORD, which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel. "
"I will give you treasures hidden in darkness, riches stored away in secret places, so you'll know that I, the LORD, the one who calls you by name, am the God of Israel."
When things go well for you, it's worth pausing to ask what β or who β actually made that possible, rather than assuming it was purely your own doing. Success can be an invitation to see more clearly, not just a reward to bank.
"For Jacob my servantβs sake, and Israel mine elect, I have even called thee by thy name: I have surnamed thee, though thou hast not known me. "
"For the sake of Jacob my servant, Israel my chosen one, I called you by name and gave you a title of honour, even though you didn't know me."
You don't have to fully understand or believe in the bigger picture to end up doing real good within it. Do the good in front of you; understanding can come later, or not at all β it doesn't cancel the good.
"I am the LORD, and there is none else, there is no God beside me: I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: "
"I am the LORD, and there's no other; there's no god besides me. I equipped you for this even though you didn't know me."
The strength and opportunity you've been given for your work in the world came from somewhere beyond just your own effort, whether or not you've ever stopped to notice. Gratitude doesn't require full understanding.
"That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside me. I am the LORD, and there is none else. "
"This is so that people everywhere, from where the sun rises to where it sets, will know there's no one besides me β I am the LORD, and there is no other."
What you do doesn't only affect the people directly around you β its ripples can reach further than you'll ever personally see. Live with that wider reach in mind, not just the audience right in front of you.
"I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things. "
"I create light and I create darkness; I bring peace and I bring disaster β I, the LORD, am the one behind all of it."
When hard times hit, you don't have to believe you've fallen out of a bigger story or landed somewhere out of reach. Even the darkest seasons aren't proof that everything good has abandoned you β hold on through them rather than assuming you've been forsaken.
"Drop down, ye heavens, from above, and let the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together; I the LORD have created it. "
"Rain down, heavens, from above; let the skies pour out righteousness. Let the earth open up and let salvation grow, let righteousness spring up alongside it β I, the LORD, have made it happen."
You can't force real goodness or change into existence through sheer willpower alone β create the right conditions (honesty, patience, humility) and let it grow, rather than trying to manufacture it overnight.
"Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands? "
"How miserable for anyone who argues with their maker β one clay pot arguing with another clay pot made from the same earth! Does the clay ever say to the potter, 'What are you making?' or complain, 'You have no hands'?"
Be careful about rejecting good things simply because they arrive in a form you didn't choose or expect. Staying open to help from unlikely places is often wiser than insisting things go exactly your way.
"Woe unto him that saith unto his father, What begettest thou? or to the woman, What hast thou brought forth? "
"How miserable for the one who says to their father, 'What are you fathering?' or to their mother, 'What are you giving birth to?'"
There's real freedom in accepting what you can't control, rather than exhausting yourself fighting battles that were never yours to win. Save your energy for what's actually within your power to change.
"Thus saith the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hands command ye me. "
"This is what the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, its Maker, says: ask me about what's coming for my children; go ahead and question me about the work of my own hands."
Bringing your honest questions is always welcome, even after being told not to try to control everything. Curiosity and trust aren't opposites β you can ask real questions without needing to be in charge of the answers.
"I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded. "
"I made the earth and created humanity to live on it; with my own hands I stretched out the heavens, and I command everything in them."
If you trust there's real intention behind the vast scale of existence, it becomes easier to trust there's intention behind your own smaller story too. The same care applies at every scale.
"I have raised him up in righteousness, and I will direct all his ways: he shall build my city, and he shall let go my captives, not for price nor reward, saith the LORD of hosts. "
"I have raised him up for a righteous purpose, and I'll guide everything he does β he'll rebuild my city and set my captive people free, not for any payment or reward."
The best kind of help you can give β or receive β doesn't come with a price tag attached or an expectation of being repaid. Look for that kind of generosity, and try to practise it yourself.
"Thus saith the LORD, The labour of Egypt, and merchandise of Ethiopia and of the Sabeans, men of stature, shall come over unto thee, and they shall be thine: they shall come after thee; in chains they shall come over, and they shall fall down unto thee, they shall make supplication unto thee, saying, Surely God is in thee; and there is none else, there is no God. "
"This is what the LORD says: Egypt's produce and Ethiopia's and Seba's trade goods will come over to you and become yours; their people will follow you, coming over in chains, bowing down and pleading with you, saying, 'God is truly among you β there is no other, no other god at all.'"
When your own life turns around after real hardship, it can become something that draws others towards the same source of hope, without you needing to force or demand it. Let your own restoration speak for itself.
"Verily thou art a God that hidest thyself, O God of Israel, the Saviour. "
"Truly you are a God who hides yourself, God of Israel, the Saviour."
It's completely normal to go through stretches where meaning or purpose feels hidden or absent β that doesn't mean nothing real is there. Give yourself permission to sit with uncertainty rather than forcing false clarity.
"They shall be ashamed, and also confounded, all of them: they shall go to confusion together that are makers of idols. "
"They will all be humiliated and disgraced β everyone who makes idols will end up thoroughly confused."
Don't judge how much you can trust something purely by how solid or visible it looks right now. Some of the most reliable things in life are the ones you can't hold in your hand.
"But Israel shall be saved in the LORD with an everlasting salvation: ye shall not be ashamed nor confounded world without end. "
"But Israel will be saved by the LORD with a salvation that lasts forever β you will never be humiliated or disgraced, for ever and ever."
Build your sense of security on something that can actually hold weight over the long run, not something that looks impressive today but has no staying power. Lasting peace comes from a foundation that doesn't shift.
"For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else. "
"This is what the LORD says, the one who created the heavens β he is God, the one who shaped and made the earth, who set it firmly in place; he didn't create it as an empty waste, he made it to be lived in. I am the LORD, and there is no other."
You don't have to manufacture meaning entirely out of nowhere β the world itself, and your place in it, was made with purpose from the start. You're not starting from zero.
"I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth: I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain: I the LORD speak righteousness, I declare things that are right. "
"I haven't spoken in secret, hidden away in some dark corner of the world. I never told Jacob's descendants, 'Look for me, but you won't find anything.' I, the LORD, speak the truth; I say what is right."
What actually matters in life isn't locked away as some secret only a select few can access. Real truth tends to be available, plain and worth the honest search, not hidden behind exclusive gatekeeping.
"Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, ye that are escaped of the nations: they have no knowledge that set up the wood of their graven image, and pray unto a god that cannot save. "
"Gather together and come β draw near, you survivors from the nations: people who have no sense, carrying around a carved wooden idol, praying to a god that can't save them."
Test what you trust by one simple, practical question: can it actually help you when things go seriously wrong? If not, it's worth reconsidering how much weight you're putting on it.
"Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me. "
"Speak up, bring your case forward β let's think it through together. Who announced this long ago, who told it beforehand? Wasn't it me, the LORD? There's no other god besides me β a just God, a Saviour; there is none besides me."
Real goodness holds both firmness about what's right and genuine mercy together, not one at the expense of the other. Aim to be both fair and kind β they're not actually opposites.
"Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. "
"Turn to me and be saved, everyone, everywhere on earth β because I am God, and there is no other."
The invitation to real rescue and peace isn't reserved for a select few who tick the right boxes β it's open to absolutely everyone, wherever you're starting from. You don't need special qualifications to turn and look.
"I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. "
"I have made a promise by my own name; what I've said is true and it will happen, no going back on it: every knee will bow to me, every tongue will pledge loyalty."
What's true tends to become clear eventually, even if it takes a long time and isn't obvious now. You don't need to win every argument today β hold steady, and let time reveal what's real.
"Surely, shall one say, in the LORD have I righteousness and strength: even to him shall men come; and all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed. "
"People will say, 'Only in the LORD do I have what's right and real strength' β everyone will come to him, and all who were angry at him will end up ashamed."
Don't give up on people who are currently opposed to something true or good β opposition isn't always the final word; people can and do come around, sometimes after a long road.
"In the LORD shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory. "
"In the LORD, all of Israel's descendants will be set right, and they will have something genuine to be proud of."
There's a real difference between hollow pride built on pretending you're fine, and genuine confidence that comes from actually being made right. Aim for the second kind β it's the one that lasts.
