Isaiah Chapter 29
Showing all 24 verses for Isaiah Chapter 29.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"Woe to Ariel, to Ariel, the city where David add ye year to year; let them kill sacrifices. "
π‘ Highlighted words feature Jacobean 1611 tooltips to clarify shifted 17th-century English terms.
"Disaster is coming for Ariel, Ariel, the city where David lived! Keep celebrating your yearly festivals - but it won't save you."
Going through the motions of ritual or routine won't shield you from what you're actually avoiding in your life. I care about what's real underneath the performance, not the performance itself.
"Yet I will distress Ariel, and there shall be heaviness and sorrow: and it shall be unto me as Ariel. "
"Yet I will bring distress on Ariel, and there will be sorrow and mourning; the city will become like its own name - an altar hearth, burning with grief."
I don't want your performance of devotion, I want your honesty - because when the pressure comes, only what's genuinely rooted in you will hold. Build your inner life on something real, not on appearances kept up for others.
"And I will camp against thee round about, and will lay siege against thee with a mount, and I will raise forts against thee. "
"I will camp against you all around, lay siege to you with a barricade, and raise up siege towers against you."
Even when circumstances feel like they're closing in on every side, nothing is happening outside of a larger story that's still unfolding. Stay with me through the siege - it isn't the final word.
"And thou shalt be brought down, and shalt speak out of the ground, and thy speech shall be low out of the dust, and thy voice shall be, as of one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground, and thy speech shall whisper out of the dust. "
"You'll be brought down low, speaking from the ground, your words muffled from the dust; your voice will sound like a ghost whispering up from the earth."
If you've ever felt brought low, voice barely a whisper, know that this isn't the end of your story - it's often the exact place where real change and real hearing finally begin. I meet people precisely in that low place.
"Moreover the multitude of thy strangers shall be like small dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones shall be as chaff that passeth away: yea, it shall be at an instant suddenly. "
"But the crowd of your enemies will become like fine dust, the mass of ruthless attackers like chaff blown away - and it will happen suddenly, in an instant."
Whatever feels like an overwhelming force against you right now may not be nearly as solid as it looks. Don't give up hope based on how things appear in the middle of the struggle - endings can turn faster than you think.
"Thou shalt be visited of the LORD of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire. "
"You will be visited by the LORD of Heaven's Armies with thunder, earthquake, loud noise, storm, tempest, and a flame of consuming fire."
When real change comes after a long wait, it can feel sudden and total rather than gradual - don't mistake a long quiet build-up for absence. I'm not slow to act; I'm building towards the right moment.
"And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel, even all that fight against her and her munition, and that distress her, shall be as a dream of a night vision. "
"And the crowd of all the nations fighting against Ariel - all who attack her and her fortress and distress her - will be like a dream, a vision in the night that vanishes."
Some fears feel utterly real and overwhelming while you're inside them, and then simply aren't there any more once you've come through. Keep walking towards morning - the dream doesn't outlast the waking.
"It shall even be as when an hungry man dreameth, and, behold, he eateth; but he awaketh, and his soul is empty: or as when a thirsty man dreameth, and, behold, he drinketh; but he awaketh, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul hath appetite: so shall the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against mount Zion. "
"It will be like a hungry man who dreams he's eating, then wakes up still empty; or a thirsty man who dreams he's drinking, then wakes up still parched - that's how it will be for the nations who fought against Mount Zion."
Chasing a victory or satisfaction that isn't really yours to have will always leave you waking up empty-handed, no matter how real it felt in the moment. Put your hunger and thirst towards something that can actually satisfy - not a conquest that was never going to hold.
"Stay yourselves, and wonder; cry ye out, and cry: they are drunken, but not with wine; they stagger, but not with strong drink. "
"Stop and be amazed, blind yourselves and be astonished - they are drunk, but not from wine; they stagger, but not from strong drink."
You don't need alcohol to be stumbling through life half-blind - denial, distraction and busyness can do the same thing. Stop and actually look honestly at where you are; clarity starts with admitting the fog is there.
"For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered. "
"For the LORD has poured over you a spirit of deep sleep, and has shut your eyes - covering the prophets, and covering your leaders, the seers."
The more you turn away from an uncomfortable truth, the harder it becomes to see it at all - not because I'm hiding it, but because refusal has its own momentum. Choose to look now, while looking is still within reach.
"And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed: "
"So the whole vision has become like the words of a sealed book to you. Hand it to someone who can read, saying 'please read this,' and they'll say, 'I can't, it's sealed.'"
Sometimes what blocks understanding isn't a lack of knowledge but a closed heart - and no amount of cleverness gets past that on its own. Come to truth with genuine openness, and doors open that stayed shut to mere study.
"And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned. "
"And give the book to someone who can't read, saying 'please read this,' and they'll say, 'I don't know how to read.'"
You don't need more degrees or more information to understand what actually matters in life - you need an honest, open heart. I meet the humble and the learned on exactly the same terms.
"Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men: "
"The Lord said: Because this people draws near to me with empty words and honours me only with their lips, while their hearts stay far away from me - their reverence for me is just something they've been taught to recite by other people."
I have no interest in words recited out of habit if your heart isn't actually in them - I want you, not your performance. Ask yourself honestly whether what you say you value is something you actually feel, or just something you've learned to say.
"Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid. "
"So I will keep doing an astonishing thing among this people, a wonder upon a wonder - the wisdom of their wise ones will vanish, and the cleverness of their sharp thinkers will disappear."
Being smart isn't the same as being wise, and I'm not impressed by cleverness that isn't grounded in humility and honesty. The people who actually understand what matters most are often not the ones the world calls brilliant.
"Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the LORD, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us? "
"Disaster is coming for those who try to hide their plans deep from the LORD, doing their work in darkness and saying, 'Who sees us? Who knows what we're doing?'"
Nothing you do in secret is actually hidden from what matters most - not because I'm watching to catch you out, but because who you are in the dark is still who you are. Live as if there's no gap between your public and private self, because there isn't one.
"Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the posterβs clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding? "
"You have it completely backwards - as if the potter were no different from the clay! Can the thing made say of its maker, 'He didn't make me'? Can the pot say of the potter, 'He doesn't understand anything'?"
There's a kind of freedom in accepting you didn't make yourself and don't have to have all the answers about your own existence - it isn't weakness, it's honesty. Let go of the pretence of total self-sufficiency; it was never true anyway.
"Is it not yet a very little while, and Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be esteemed as a forest? "
"Isn't it just a little while now until Lebanon turns into a fertile field, and the fertile field is thought of as a forest?"
However long a barren season has felt, real change can come faster and more completely than you expect. Don't measure how much longer the wait will be by how long it's already lasted - transformation can arrive suddenly.
"And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness. "
"On that day, the deaf will hear the words of the scroll, and the eyes of the blind will see, out of gloom and darkness."
Whatever part of you feels numb, closed off, or unable to see clearly right now doesn't have to stay that way forever. I specialise in opening exactly what feels permanently shut - stay open to being surprised by your own capacity to finally see and hear.
"The meek also shall increase their joy in the LORD, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. "
"The humble will find growing joy in the LORD, and the poorest among people will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel."
You don't need to have it all figured out or be impressive to find real joy - in fact, that pretence often gets in the way. Come as you actually are, low and honest, and there's more room for genuine joy there than you'd think.
"For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scorner is consumed, and all that watch for iniquity are cut off: "
"Because the ruthless one will come to nothing, the mocker will be finished, and all who watch for a chance to do wrong will be cut off."
If you've ever been on the receiving end of someone's cruelty or manipulation, know that their apparent power over you isn't permanent or unanswered. I see what they've done, and it doesn't get the last word.
"That make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of nought. "
"Those who make someone guilty over a mere word, who set a trap for the one who speaks up for justice at the city gate, and who twist aside the innocent with empty accusations."
If speaking honestly or standing up for what's fair has ever cost you, know that I stand with the person telling the truth, not the system twisting it against them. Keep speaking honestly - the outcome of corrupted justice is never the final word.
"Therefore thus saith the LORD, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob, Jacob shall not now be ashamed, neither shall his face now wax pale. "
"So this is what the LORD, who redeemed Abraham, says about the house of Jacob: Jacob will no longer be ashamed, his face will no longer grow pale with fear."
Whatever shame or fear you're carrying doesn't have to define your future - it can be lifted, not just managed. I'm not asking you to hide your face; I'm offering to take away the reason it's hidden.
"But when he seeth his children, the work of mine hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify my name, and sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel. "
"For when he sees his children, the work of my hands, among him, they will treat my name as holy, honour the Holy One of Jacob, and stand in awe of the God of Israel."
Genuine respect and awe can't be forced or faked forever - it grows naturally once something real has actually happened inside you. I'm more interested in shaping who you are than in getting the right words out of you.
"They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine. "
"Those who wandered astray in spirit will come to understanding, and those who grumbled will learn true teaching."
If you've spent a long time confused or complaining about your life, that isn't a permanent verdict on you - understanding can still come, even after a long, frustrated road. Stay open to learning something true, even from a place of doubt.
