Isaiah Chapter 24
Showing all 23 verses for Isaiah Chapter 24.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof. "
"Look — the LORD is about to strip the earth bare, lay it waste, twist it upside down, and scatter everyone who lives on it."
Sometimes a problem isn't really about one bad decision or one bad actor — it's about a whole way of living that's out of balance. Don't just patch small things; be willing to let God turn over the bigger picture in your own life when it's needed, even if that's unsettling at first.
"And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him. "
"It will happen to everyone alike: people and priests, workers and bosses, servants and mistresses, buyers and sellers, borrowers and lenders, debtors and creditors — no one is exempt."
None of us are more important than anyone else in the end — the boss and the worker, the lender and the borrower, stand on exactly the same ground before what really matters. Let that dissolve any contempt you carry for people 'below' you and any fear you carry of people 'above' you.
"The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken this word. "
"The earth will be completely stripped and completely plundered — this is what the LORD has declared."
Don't minimise the seriousness of consequences, in the world or in your own life, by telling yourself it won't really be that bad. Facing the full weight of a situation honestly is what makes real change possible.
"The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish. "
"The earth dries up and withers, the world wastes away and fades, even its proud and powerful people waste away."
If you find yourself thinking you're too smart, too successful, or too careful for real trouble to reach you, that's exactly the moment to get humble. Nobody is beyond needing help or beyond needing to grow.
"The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. "
"The earth itself is polluted by the people living on it, because they've broken the laws, ignored the standards, and violated the everlasting agreement."
How you live doesn't just affect you — dishonesty, injustice, and broken promises damage the whole fabric people share, in ways that spread further than you can see. Keep your word and treat people fairly; it matters more than you think, for more people than you'll ever meet.
"Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left. "
"So a curse eats up the earth, and its people bear the guilt; that's why they're burned up and so few are left."
Every choice you make sends out ripples, for good or for harm. I'm not telling you this to frighten you, but so you'll take your daily choices seriously — small acts of honesty and care actually do add up to a different kind of world.
"The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merryhearted do sigh. "
"The new wine dries up, the vines wither, everyone who used to celebrate is now sighing instead."
Notice and protect the small joys in your life — a shared meal, laughter, celebration with people you love. When those things go quiet, take it seriously as a signal that something deeper needs attention, not just as bad luck.
"The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth. "
"The cheerful sound of tambourines stops, the noise of celebration ends, the joy of the harp falls silent."
Pay attention when the music genuinely goes out of your life — when you stop laughing, stop celebrating, stop making things with joy. That silence is worth listening to, not ignoring; it's often the first sign something needs to change.
"They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it. "
"They won't drink wine with singing any more; strong drink will taste bitter to those who drink it."
If you notice your usual comforts — food, drink, distraction, entertainment — have stopped actually satisfying you, don't just reach for more of the same. That flatness is often a sign you need real connection or real change, not more of the thing that isn't working.
"The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up, that no man may come in. "
"The city of chaos lies in ruins; every house is shut up tight, nobody can get in."
Notice when you start building walls to protect yourself that end up isolating you instead. Real safety doesn't come from shutting people out — it comes from honest, trustworthy relationships, which is a much harder thing to build than a locked door.
"There is a crying for wine in the streets; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone. "
"In the streets people cry out for wine; all joy has gone dark, all the happiness has left the land."
Don't take the good, joyful things in your life for granted while you have them. Gratitude now, while things are good, is what protects you from taking blessings so lightly that you don't notice when they're gone.
"In the city is left desolation, and the gate is smitten with destruction. "
"What's left in the city is only desolation; its gate has been smashed to pieces."
When your usual defences — routines, control, the way you've always managed things — get smashed by circumstances outside your control, it can feel like total collapse. But it can also be the moment you learn to rely on something more solid than your own defences.
"When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, there shall be as the shaking of an olive tree, and as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done. "
"This is how it will be across the earth, among all the peoples — like an olive tree that's been shaken bare, like the last few grapes left after the main harvest is gathered."
Even after you feel completely stripped bare by hardship, something always remains — some fruit, some strength, some hope, however small. Don't write yourself off just because most of what you had is gone; a few grapes left on the vine can still start something new.
"They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the LORD, they shall cry aloud from the sea. "
"The survivors will raise their voices and sing out for the majesty of the LORD; they'll cry out joyfully from the sea."
Even in the aftermath of real loss, look for what's still worth celebrating. Gratitude isn't denial of pain — it can live right alongside grief, and it's often what carries people through to the other side.
"Wherefore glorify ye the LORD in the fires, even the name of the LORD God of Israel in the isles of the sea. "
"So give glory to the LORD in the east, where the light rises; praise the name of the LORD, Israel's God, in the islands and coastlands of the sea."
Wherever you are, whatever's happened to scatter your life from where it used to be, you can still find your own voice of gratitude and hope. You don't need to be back home or back to normal first.
"From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs, even glory to the righteous. But I said, My leanness, my leanness, woe unto me! the treacherous dealers have dealt treacherously; yea, the treacherous dealers have dealt very treacherously. "
"From the far ends of the earth we hear singing: glory to the righteous one! But I said, I'm wasting away, I'm wasting away, how terrible for me — because the treacherous have betrayed, betrayed again and again."
You're allowed to hold hope for the future and real grief about the present at the exact same time — one doesn't cancel the other out. Don't let anyone tell you that having faith means you're not allowed to say 'this is terrible' when it genuinely is.
"Fear, and the pit, and the snare, are upon thee, O inhabitant of the earth. "
"Terror, the pit, and the trap are waiting for you, everyone who lives on this earth."
Trying to outrun a problem by cleverness or avoidance usually just walks you into a different trap. I'd rather you face what's actually in front of you honestly than keep trying to dodge sideways.
"And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake. "
"Whoever runs from the sound of terror will fall into the pit, and whoever climbs out of the pit will get caught in the trap — because the floodgates above are open and the foundations of the earth are shaking."
When it feels like everything is shaking at once, remember that some seasons genuinely can't be outmanoeuvred, only endured and trusted through. That's when you find out what your foundation is really made of.
"The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly. "
"The earth is completely shattered, the earth is split wide open, the earth is shaken violently."
When your own world feels like it's shaking apart, it's okay if your thoughts feel scattered and unsteady too — that's a normal response to real upheaval, not a sign you're failing to cope.
"The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again. "
"The earth staggers back and forth like a drunk, sways like a flimsy shack in the wind; its own wrongdoing weighs it down so heavily that it falls, never to get up again."
Left unaddressed, small wrongs and injustices really do accumulate weight over time until they cause real collapse. Don't wait until the load is unbearable — deal honestly with what's wrong while it's still small enough to fix.
"And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth. "
"When that day comes, the LORD will punish the powers in the heavens above and the kings of the earth below."
Whatever power structures feel untouchable to you — political, corporate, even things that feel almost supernatural in their grip on your life — none of them are actually beyond being answered for. That should give you real hope, not resignation.
"And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited. "
"They'll be gathered together like prisoners thrown into a dungeon, shut up in prison — and after a long time, they'll be dealt with."
If it feels like wrongdoing around you is going unanswered, don't assume that means it will stay that way forever. Delay isn't the same as denial — keep living rightly while you wait, rather than giving up on justice because it's slow.
"Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the LORD of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously. "
"Then the moon will be humiliated and the sun ashamed, because the LORD of Heaven's Armies will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, gloriously, in front of his elders."
Whatever you currently look to for your sense of awe and meaning, know that it points beyond itself to something even greater. Don't stop your search for meaning at the first impressive thing you find — keep looking for what's genuinely worth basing your whole life on.
