Ezekiel Chapter 21
Showing all 32 verses for Ezekiel Chapter 21.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"And the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, "
"God speaks to Ezekiel once more, giving him a fresh message to deliver."
Even the hardest truths need someone willing to say them - I know how heavy that can feel. If you're ever in that position, remember you're not the author of the truth, only its messenger; that can free you from needing everyone to like what you say.
"Son of man, set thy face toward Jerusalem, and drop thy word toward the holy places, and prophesy against the land of Israel, "
"God tells Ezekiel to physically turn and face Jerusalem, aim his words at its sacred sites, and prophesy against the whole land of Israel."
I care far more about how you actually live than about the buildings, titles or image you hide behind. No sacred address protects you from the truth of your own choices, so let go of relying on appearances and look honestly at your life instead.
"And say to the land of Israel, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I am against thee, and will draw forth my sword out of his sheath, and will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked. "
"Tell the land of Israel: God is now against it, and is drawing his sword to cut off both innocent and guilty people alike."
Being personally decent doesn't automatically shield you when a broken system collapses around you - sometimes it just doesn't work that way. What I ask is that you don't add to the corruption you find yourself inside, and that you help build something worth saving.
"Seeing then that I will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked, therefore shall my sword go forth out of his sheath against all flesh from the south to the north: "
"Because both good and bad people will be swept away, God's sword will go out against everyone, from south to north."
When a whole culture drifts, the fallout rarely stays contained to whoever started it. Notice the direction your own community is heading, and be someone who pulls it back towards honesty rather than shrugging because everyone else is doing it.
"That all flesh may know that I the LORD have drawn forth my sword out of his sheath: it shall not return any more. "
"This is happening so everyone will know God himself has drawn his sword - and it will not go back into its sheath; this isn't a bluff that will simply pass."
Take warnings seriously before the moment for change has gone, not after. There's real kindness in facing a hard truth early, while you can still act on it, rather than waiting until the consequence is already unstoppable.
"Sigh therefore, thou son of man, with the breaking of thy loins; and with bitterness sigh before their eyes. "
"So you, son of man, groan - groan as if your whole body were breaking, and do it bitterly, where people can see you."
You don't have to perform a strength you don't feel. When something is genuinely breaking your heart, let it show - honest grief, shared openly, can wake people up to a truth a calm argument never would.
"And it shall be, when they say unto thee, Wherefore sighest thou? that thou shalt answer, For the tidings; because it cometh: and every heart shall melt, and all hands shall be feeble, and every spirit shall faint, and all knees shall be weak as water: behold, it cometh, and shall be brought to pass, saith the Lord GOD. "
"When people ask why you're groaning, tell them: because news is coming - and when it arrives, everyone's courage will collapse, hands go limp, spirits fail, and knees turn to water. It's coming, says the Lord God."
I'd rather you feel the weight of a hard truth now, prepared and steady, than be blindsided later and fall apart. Facing reality honestly, even when frightening, spares you a worse collapse down the line.
"Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, "
"God spoke to Ezekiel again with a further message."
Some messages need saying again, in a new way, before they truly sink in. I'm patient with you the same way, returning again and again until the truth finally lands.
"Son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus saith the LORD; Say, A sword, a sword is sharpened, and also furbished: "
"Say this: A sword, a sword - it has been sharpened, and it has been polished."
Notice when the consequences of a wrong path are already quietly being prepared, even before you can see them arrive. Waking up early gives you the chance to change course while there's still time.
"It is sharpened to make a sore slaughter; it is furbished that it may glitter: should we then make mirth? it contemneth the rod of my son, as every tree. "
"It's sharpened for terrible slaughter, polished to flash like lightning - so should we be celebrating? This sword despises every rod of correction, every piece of wood, even the royal line itself."
When gentle correction keeps getting ignored, don't be surprised that harder consequences eventually follow. I'd rather you take small warnings seriously now than wait for the big one.
"And he hath given it to be furbished, that it may be handled: this sword is sharpened, and it is furbished, to give it into the hand of the slayer. "
"The sword has been polished so it's ready to grip - sharpened and polished, ready to be placed into the hand of the executioner."
Consequences aren't usually random - they're often the predictable outcome of choices made and warnings ignored. Take responsibility early, before the outcome is out of your control.
"Cry and howl, son of man: for it shall be upon my people, it shall be upon all the princes of Israel: terrors by reason of the sword shall be upon my people: smite therefore upon thy thigh. "
"Cry out and wail, son of man - because this sword is coming for my own people, for all Israel's leaders. Terror because of the sword will grip my people, so strike your thigh in anguish."
I don't take pleasure in anyone's downfall, even deserved consequences - I grieve with you in it. If you ever have to deliver hard truths to people you love, let yourself feel the sorrow of it rather than pretending it costs nothing.
"Because it is a trial, and what if the sword contemn even the rod? it shall be no more, saith the Lord GOD. "
"This is a testing time - and what if even the rod of discipline itself gets swept aside by the sword? That rod will be no more, says the Lord God."
No position of authority protects you from accountability if what you've built rests on corruption rather than integrity. I care about what's true underneath the title, not the title itself.
"Thou therefore, son of man, prophesy, and smite thine hands together, and let the sword be doubled the third time, the sword of the slain: it is the sword of the great men that are slain, which entereth into their privy chambers. "
"So, son of man, prophesy and clap your hands together - let the sword strike again and again, even a third time - the sword that kills great men, reaching even into their private inner rooms."
You can't hide from the truth of your own life behind closed doors, however protected you feel. I'd rather you deal honestly with what's inside those rooms now, while you still have the choice.
"I have set the point of the sword against all their gates, that their heart may faint, and their ruins be multiplied: ah! it is made bright, it is wrapped up for the slaughter. "
"I have aimed the sword's point at every one of their gates, so their courage collapses and their ruin piles up. Ah - it gleams, drawn and ready for slaughter."
Don't put your trust in walls, reputation or defences to protect you if what's inside isn't right. Real security comes from integrity, not fortification - build your life on something that can't be undermined from within.
"Go thee one way or other, either on the right hand, or on the left, whithersoever thy face is set. "
"Go one way or another, sword - strike right or left, wherever you're aimed."
Once certain consequences are already set in motion, don't spend your energy trying to predict or dodge every angle of them - put it instead into meeting whatever comes with honesty and courage.
"I will also smite mine hands together, and I will cause my fury to rest: I the LORD have said it. "
"I too will clap my hands together, and I will let my fury run its full course and settle. I, the LORD, have said it."
Even righteous anger has a limit and a purpose - it isn't meant to burn forever. If you're carrying anger about real wrongs, let it move through you towards resolution, not become a permanent state you live in.
"The word of the LORD came unto me again, saying, "
"God spoke to Ezekiel again."
Sometimes words alone don't make a truth land. I meet you where you are, through pictures, stories and demonstrations, not just speeches.
"Also, thou son of man, appoint thee two ways, that the sword of the king of Babylon may come: both twain shall come forth out of one land: and choose thou a place, choose it at the head of the way to the city. "
"Also, son of man, mark out two roads for the king of Babylon's sword to travel - both starting from the same country - and set up a signpost where the road forks towards the city."
I'm not distant from the big decisions being made by powerful people around you, even those who don't acknowledge me. Take heart - nothing in the wider world happening around your life is outside my awareness or care.
"Appoint a way, that the sword may come to Rabbath of the Ammonites, and to Judah in Jerusalem the defenced. "
"Mark out the road so the sword can reach Rabbah, the Ammonite capital, and also reach Judah, to fortified Jerusalem."
Truth isn't afraid of specifics. I'd rather you deal honestly with the actual, named details of your life than hide behind vague generalities about being 'a good person.'
"For the king of Babylon stood at the parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use divination: he made his arrows bright, he consulted with images, he looked in the liver. "
"The king of Babylon stands at the fork in the road to consult the omens: he shakes bright arrows to see how they fall, questions his household idols, and examines a sacrificed animal's liver for signs."
You don't need to control every outcome through anxious rituals or constant second-guessing. Trust that there's a larger order at work even in situations you can't manipulate, and let that trust loosen your grip on needing to control everything.
"At his right hand was the divination for Jerusalem, to appoint captains, to open the mouth in the slaughter, to lift up the voice with shouting, to appoint battering rams against the gates, to cast a mount, and to build a fort. "
"The omen favouring Jerusalem falls into his right hand - so he appoints commanders, gives the battle cry, raises the war shout, sets up battering rams against the gates, builds a siege ramp, and constructs a fort."
When a warning becomes this specific and detailed, it isn't scare-mongering - it's love trying to get through to you before it's too late. Pay attention when truth gets concrete; that's usually when it matters most.
"And it shall be unto them as a false divination in their sight, to them that have sworn oaths: but he will call to remembrance the iniquity, that they may be taken. "
"To the people of Jerusalem this will look like a false omen, especially to those who've sworn treaty oaths - but it will bring their guilt back to mind, so they get caught."
Don't let confidence in your own agreements or excuses blind you to a truth you'd rather not face. I'd rather you look honestly at where you've broken faith than protect a comfortable denial.
"Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because ye have made your iniquity to be remembered, in that your transgressions are discovered, so that in all your doings your sins do appear; because, I say, that ye are come to remembrance, ye shall be taken with the hand. "
"So says the Lord God: because you've made your guilt impossible to forget - your wrongdoing exposed, your sins visible in everything you do - because you've brought this to mind yourselves, you will be seized by force."
What you do repeatedly reveals who you actually are, more than what you say about yourself. I want you to catch yourself early, in the small patterns, before they harden into something that can't be undone quietly.
"And thou, profane wicked prince of Israel, whose day is come, when iniquity shall have an end, "
"And you, corrupt, godless prince of Israel - your day has arrived, the day your wrongdoing finally reaches its end."
Whatever authority you hold, I judge you by the same honest standard as anyone else - no title exempts you from accountability. Real leadership means holding yourself to a higher standard, not a lower one.
"Thus saith the Lord GOD; Remove the diadem, and take off the crown: this shall not be the same: exalt him that is low, and abase him that is high. "
"So says the Lord God: take off the turban, remove the crown - things will not stay as they are. Lift up the lowly, bring down the exalted."
I turn the world's usual order upside down - the proud brought low, the humble lifted up. If you're currently on top, stay humble; if you feel small and overlooked, know your worth was never measured by that.
"I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is; and I will give it him. "
"I will overturn it, overturn it, overturn it - it will not exist again, until the one comes who has the rightful claim to it, and I will give it to him."
Even in the middle of describing everything falling apart, I never leave you without hope pointing forward - collapse isn't the final word. Whatever is being overturned in your life right now may be clearing space for something more rightfully yours to come.
"And thou, son of man, prophesy and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning the Ammonites, and concerning their reproach; even say thou, The sword, the sword is drawn: for the slaughter it is furbished, to consume because of the glittering: "
"And you, son of man, prophesy and say: this is what the Lord God says about the Ammonites and their taunting - say: the sword, the sword is drawn, polished for slaughter, ready to consume, flashing bright."
Never take pleasure in someone else's misfortune, especially when it looks like consequences catching up with them - that same measure has a way of coming back around. Choose compassion over gloating, every time.
"Whiles they see vanity unto thee, whiles they divine a lie unto thee, to bring thee upon the necks of them that are slain, of the wicked, whose day is come, when their iniquity shall have an end. "
"While they show you false visions and lying omens, all it does is bring you down among the slain, among the wicked whose day has come, when their wrongdoing finally reaches its end."
Don't surround yourself with voices that only tell you what you want to hear. I'd rather you have one honest friend willing to tell you a hard truth than a crowd of flatterers leaving you unprepared for what's real.
"Shall I cause it to return into his sheath? I will judge thee in the place where thou wast created, in the land of thy nativity. "
"Should I put the sword back in its sheath? No - I will judge you right in the place you were born, your own homeland."
You can't outrun consequences by pretending they belong to someone else's story - they meet you exactly where you are, in your own life. Facing that honestly, rather than deflecting, is where real change begins.
"And I will pour out mine indignation upon thee, I will blow against thee in the fire of my wrath, and deliver thee into the hand of brutish men, and skilful to destroy. "
"I will pour out my anger on you, breathe on you with the fire of my fury, and hand you over to brutal men, experts in destruction."
Take real threats seriously rather than underestimating them out of pride or denial. Recognising the true scale of a danger, in your own life or relationships, is the first honest step towards protecting what matters.
"Thou shalt be for fuel to the fire; thy blood shall be in the midst of the land; thou shalt be no more remembered: for I the LORD have spoken it. "
"You will become fuel for the fire; your blood will soak the land; you will not be remembered any more - because I, the LORD, have said it."
Nothing built on cruelty and mockery of others lasts, however powerful it looks right now. Build your life instead on things that endure - love, honesty, mercy - because those are the only foundations that don't eventually crumble to nothing.
