2 Chronicles Chapter 17
Showing all 19 verses for 2 Chronicles Chapter 17.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"And Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his stead, and strengthened himself against Israel. "
"Jehoshaphat, Asa's son, became king in his place and strengthened himself against Israel."
Starting a new responsibility with intention and strength, rather than drifting into it passively, sets a different tone for everything that follows. Begin what matters to you with real resolve, not half-hearted momentum.
"And he placed forces in all the fenced cities of Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim, which Asa his father had taken. "
"He stationed troops in all of Judah's fortified cities and placed garrisons throughout Judah and in the cities of Ephraim that his father Asa had captured."
Protect and maintain what's already good in your life, not just chase after new achievements - stewardship of what you've been given matters as much as ambition for what's next. Don't let past gains erode through carelessness.
"And the LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the first ways of his father David, and sought not unto Baalim; "
"The LORD was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the early ways of his ancestor David and didn't turn to worship the Baals."
You get to choose which parts of someone's example to follow - take the best of what people who came before you modelled, and leave behind what didn't serve them well. Learning selectively from someone's life is wise, not disloyal.
"But sought to the Lord God of his father, and walked in his commandments, and not after the doings of Israel. "
"Instead, he sought the God of his father, followed his commandments, and didn't act like the kingdom of Israel did."
Just because something is common or normalised around you doesn't make it the right path for you to follow. Have the confidence to walk differently from the crowd when your own convictions point another way.
"Therefore the LORD stablished the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah brought to Jehoshaphat presents; and he had riches and honour in abundance. "
"So the LORD established the kingdom firmly under his rule, and all Judah brought Jehoshaphat gifts, and he had great riches and honour."
Living with integrity often earns you trust and support from others over time, even if that's never the reason to do it. Let good character be the goal, and let whatever recognition follows be a bonus, not the point.
"And his heart was lifted up in the ways of the LORD: moreover he took away the high places and groves out of Judah. "
"His heart was fully devoted to the ways of the LORD; he also removed the high places and the Asherah poles from Judah."
When you're genuinely excited about doing what's right, rather than just obligated to it, that energy carries you further and does more good. Let your convictions come from real enthusiasm, not just a sense of duty.
"Also in the third year of his reign he sent to his princes, even to Benhail, and to Obadiah, and to Zechariah, and to Nethaneel, and to Michaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah. "
"In the third year of his reign, he sent his officials - Ben-hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethaneel, and Micaiah - to teach in the cities of Judah."
Investing in teaching and understanding, not just enforcing rules, builds something that lasts far longer than fear-based compliance ever could. If you want to help others grow, teach them to understand, not just to obey.
"And with them he sent Levites, even Shemaiah, and Nethaniah, and Zebadiah, and Asahel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehonathan, and Adonijah, and Tobijah, and Tobadonijah, Levites; and with them Elishama and Jehoram, priests. "
"With them he sent Levites - Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tob-adonijah - and with them the priests Elishama and Jehoram."
The people who quietly go out and teach, explain, and pass on wisdom rarely get much glory, but their work often outlasts more visible achievements. If that's your role in someone's life, know that it matters and it's seen.
"And they taught in Judah, and had the book of the law of the LORD with them, and went about throughout all the cities of Judah, and taught the people. "
"They taught throughout Judah, carrying the Book of the Law of the LORD with them, travelling through all the cities of Judah and teaching the people."
Meet people where they are rather than expecting them to come all the way to you before they can learn or grow. The most effective teaching goes out to find people, not the other way around.
"And the fear of the LORD fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were round about Judah, so that they made no war against Jehoshaphat. "
"The fear of the LORD fell on all the surrounding kingdoms, so none of them made war against Jehoshaphat."
A settled, principled life often earns you a kind of quiet respect that keeps unnecessary conflict away before it even begins. Character can be its own form of protection.
"Also some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents, and tribute silver; and the Arabians brought him flocks, seven thousand and seven hundred rams, and seven thousand and seven hundred he goats. "
"Some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat gifts and tribute silver, and the Arabians brought him flocks - seven thousand seven hundred rams and seven thousand seven hundred male goats."
When you build something solid and trustworthy, recognition sometimes comes from directions you didn't even seek it from. Stay focused on doing things well, and let respect arrive in its own time and its own way.
"And Jehoshaphat waxed great exceedingly; and he built in Judah castles, and cities of store. "
"Jehoshaphat grew increasingly powerful; he built fortresses and store cities throughout Judah."
Real growth tends to be steady and sustained rather than a single dramatic leap - keep building, brick by brick, even after you've already achieved real success. Don't coast once things start going well.
"And he had much business in the cities of Judah: and the men of war, mighty men of valour, were in Jerusalem. "
"He had extensive operations underway in the cities of Judah, and skilled, experienced fighting men were stationed in Jerusalem."
Being prepared and organised isn't about fear - it's about taking your responsibilities seriously so you can protect and provide for what's been entrusted to you. Diligence in the unglamorous, administrative parts of life matters just as much as the visible wins.
"And these are the numbers of them according to the house of their fathers: Of Judah, the captains of thousands; Adnah the chief, and with him mighty men of valour three hundred thousand. "
"These are their numbers by ancestral family: from Judah, the commanders of thousands - Adnah the chief officer, with three hundred thousand valiant fighting men under him."
The people who show up and take real responsibility, even when their names aren't the ones history remembers best, deserve to be seen and valued. Notice and appreciate the "Adnahs" quietly carrying real weight around you.
"And next to him was Jehohanan the captain, and with him two hundred and fourscore thousand. "
"Next to him was Jehohanan the commander, with two hundred and eighty thousand under him."
Good structure and clear roles allow a group of people to accomplish far more together than the same people working without any order. Whatever team or family you're part of benefits from clarity about who's responsible for what.
"And next him was Amasiah the son of Zichri, who willingly offered himself unto the LORD; and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of valour. "
"Next was Amasiah son of Zichri, who volunteered himself willingly for the LORD's service, with two hundred thousand valiant fighting men under him."
You can bring genuine devotion and personal meaning into even the most ordinary or expected roles you fill - what matters is the spirit in which you offer your effort, not just the task itself. Volunteer your best self, not just your obligated self.
"And of Benjamin; Eliada a mighty man of valour, and with him armed men with bow and shield two hundred thousand. "
"From Benjamin: Eliada, a valiant fighting man, with two hundred thousand men armed with bow and shield."
Strong alliances and partnerships, built over time, add real strength that neither side could achieve fully alone. Value and maintain the people who stand alongside you consistently, even if they're not exactly like you.
"And next him was Jehozabad, and with him an hundred and fourscore thousand ready prepared for the war. "
"Next to him was Jehozabad, with a hundred and eighty thousand men equipped and ready for war."
Being "ready" isn't just about having resources - it's about having them properly prepared and organised for when they're actually needed. Don't confuse having potential with being genuinely prepared to use it well.
"These waited on the king, beside those whom the king put in the fenced cities throughout all Judah. "
"These were the ones who served the king, in addition to those he had stationed in the fortified cities throughout Judah."
When your foundations are solid - your values, your relationships, your integrity - the practical strength and security in your life tends to follow and multiply on top of that foundation. Build the root well, and the fruit takes care of itself.
