1 Corinthians Chapter 12
Showing all 31 verses for 1 Corinthians Chapter 12.
The People's Bible is written by people, for the people. Each verse below shows:
"Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. "
"Now, about spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I don't want you to be uninformed."
I don't want you operating on guesswork about the things that matter most for how you live in community. Understanding what your abilities are for changes how you use them.
"Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. "
"You know that when you were outsiders to the faith, you were led astray to worship idols that couldn't even speak."
I know what it's like to have followed things that led nowhere. What matters now isn't shame about your past, but learning to tell the difference between what's real and what's just noise.
"Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. "
"So I want you to understand: no one speaking by God's Spirit says "Jesus is cursed," and no one can genuinely say "Jesus is Lord" except by the Holy Spirit."
Don't be dazzled by something just because it feels powerful or intense - ask what it's actually pointing you towards. The substance matters more than the show.
"Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. "
"There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit gives them."
Your talents look different from someone else's, and that's exactly how it's meant to be. Don't compete over whose gift is better - trace them all back to the same generous source.
"And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. "
"There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord."
Whatever role you end up playing, big or small, visible or hidden, you're working for the same purpose as everyone else who's genuinely trying to do good. That's worth remembering when your job feels unglamorous.
"And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. "
"There are different kinds of activity, but the same God is at work, producing all of it in everyone."
Don't measure your worth by comparing your results to someone else's. What matters is that you're genuinely putting in effort towards something good - the outcome isn't entirely in your hands anyway.
"But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. "
"Each person is given some evidence of the Spirit's presence, for the benefit of everyone."
Whatever ability you've got, I didn't give it to you just for you - I gave it so you'd have something real to offer the people around you. Look for how to use it for others, not just for yourself.
"For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; "
"To one person the Spirit gives wisdom in how to speak; to another, knowledge, by the same Spirit."
If you're someone who can put things into words clearly, who can help others see something they were missing - use that gift generously. Insight that stays locked up inside you helps no one.
"To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; "
"To another, faith, by the same Spirit; to another, gifts of healing, by the same Spirit."
Some people are given an extraordinary steadiness in hard moments, or an ability to bring real relief to others' suffering. Whichever one is yours, it's worth developing and offering, not hoarding.
"To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: "
"To another, the ability to do miracles; to another, prophecy; to another, the ability to tell spirits apart; to another, different kinds of tongues; to another, the ability to interpret tongues."
The flashier gifts aren't automatically the most important ones. What matters is whether whatever you've got is genuine and actually used to help people, not how much attention it draws.
"But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. "
"But one and the same Spirit is behind all of these, distributing them to each person individually, exactly as he chooses."
What you've been given isn't a trophy you won - it's something handed to you. Hold it with gratitude, not entitlement, and don't resent what someone else was handed instead.
"For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. "
"Just as a body is one thing but has many parts, and all those parts, though many, make up one body - so it is with Christ."
You're not meant to function alone, cut off from everyone else who's trying to do good in the world. You're one working part of something much bigger than yourself.
"For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. "
"For we were all baptised by one Spirit into one body - whether Jew or Greek, slave or free - and we were all given the one Spirit to drink."
The lines society draws to separate people - by background, status, wealth, or anything else - don't hold the same weight in how I see things. I'm interested in bringing very different people into one real community, not sorting them by category.
"For the body is not one member, but many. "
"For the body isn't made up of just one part, but of many."
Don't wish everyone around you were more like you. A community made of identical people isn't stronger - it's actually less able to function.
"If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? "
"If the foot said, "Because I'm not a hand, I don't belong to the body" - would that make it any less part of the body?"
Don't let comparing yourself to someone with different gifts convince you that you don't belong. Being different from someone else was never a reason to disqualify yourself.
"And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? "
"And if the ear said, "Because I'm not an eye, I don't belong to the body" - would that make it any less part of the body?"
Comparing your role to someone else's different role is a trap that will always leave you feeling like you don't fit. Stop measuring yourself by a job that was never meant to be yours.
"If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? "
"If the whole body were an eye, how would it hear? If the whole body were an ear, how would it smell?"
Imagine if everyone had exactly your gift and no one had anyone else's - the whole community would break down. Be grateful for the differences you sometimes find frustrating; they're what make the whole thing work.
"But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. "
"But as it is, God has placed each part of the body exactly where he wanted it to be."
You are exactly where you were meant to be, doing exactly the kind of good only you can do in that spot. That's not flattery - it's how a healthy community is actually built.
"And if they were all one member, where were the body? "
"And if they were all just one part, where would the body be?"
There's no version of a healthy community where everyone is the same. Difference isn't the problem to solve - it's the design.
"But now are they many members, yet but one body. "
"But as it is, there are many parts, yet just one body."
You can be completely yourself, different from everyone else around you, and still be fully part of something bigger that needs you exactly as you are.
"And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. "
"The eye can't say to the hand, "I don't need you," and the head can't say to the feet, "I don't need you either.""
Never look down on someone whose contribution seems less impressive than yours. You need them more than you probably realise - and pretending otherwise only isolates you.
"Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary: "
"In fact, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are actually indispensable."
The quiet, unglamorous contributions - the ones nobody applauds - are very often the ones holding everything else together. Don't undervalue what doesn't get noticed.
"And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness. "
"And the parts we consider less honourable, we treat with special honour; the parts we think are less presentable, we treat with special care."
Go out of your way to honour the people whose contributions usually go unnoticed. Deliberately giving attention to who gets overlooked is one of the clearest signs of real love.
"For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked: "
"Our more presentable parts don't need this special treatment. But God has put the body together in such a way that greater honour is given to the part that lacked it."
I go out of my way to lift up whoever's been overlooked or undervalued. If you want to reflect that in your own life, look for who's missing recognition and make sure they get it.
"That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. "
"This is so there would be no division in the body, but that all the parts would have equal concern for one another."
I want you caring about the wellbeing of people who are nothing like you, purely because they're part of the same story you're part of. That's what stops small differences turning into real division.
"And whether one member all the members with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it. "

"If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it; if one part is honoured, all the parts celebrate with it."
When someone close to you is hurting, let it actually touch you - and when someone succeeds, let yourself be genuinely glad for them without envy. That's what it looks like to actually belong to each other.
"Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. "
"Now, you together are the body of Christ, and individually, each of you is a part of it."
You matter both as an individual and as part of something bigger than yourself - neither cancels out the other. You're not just a number in a crowd, and you're not meant to go it alone either.
"And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. "
"And God has appointed people in the church - first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then those who do miracles, then those with gifts of healing, those who help others, those with leadership abilities, and those who speak in different tongues."
Whether your role looks impressive or looks like quietly helping behind the scenes, both matter to me equally. Don't measure your calling by how visible it is.
"Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? "
"Are all of you apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles?"
You were never meant to be everything to everyone. Accepting the limits of your own role frees you to actually do it well, instead of exhausting yourself trying to cover every base.
"Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? "
"Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret them?"
You don't need to have what someone else has to be complete or valid. Chasing someone else's exact gift instead of developing your own is a waste of the specific thing I gave you.
"But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way. "
"So keep earnestly desiring the greater gifts. And now I'm going to show you an even better way."
Go ahead and want to grow, want to be genuinely useful - that's a good desire. But don't stop there; the real goal underneath every gift I give you is love. Chase that first, and the rest finds its proper place.
